How to organize mods?

Recommended Posts

I wasn't really sure if I should post it here or in the mods folder but decided here as it doesn't discuss mods in particular.

Just recently got this game and intend to start playing it online when I get my new computer. However all these mods that are available scare me a little as I don't really know how to handle them all. I might wan't to run one mod this time and then again run it clean next time. Do the mods overwrite original files? When I join a squad they might require specific mods and another public server needs others. Is it all easy to handle and jump between them?

Also is there a list somewhere of mods, what they do and if they work with each other?

It's rather simple actually. smile_o.gif

The modfolders you put in the ARMA directory need to be(%99.999 already are named differently) named differently from any folders already in the ARMA install directory. Depending on what version of ARMA you have, this is typically c:\program files\bohemia interactive\ArmA or c:\program files\Atari\Arma

Keeping in mind the above statement, anytime you put a modfolder into the ArmA folder, you 'load' the mod(in the modfolder) by adding it to the ARMA shortcut on your desktop. So if you have a modfolder called "@CSM" that you've just put into the ARMA directory, if you right-click on the ARMA shortcut, goto Properties, then in the 'Target' line you add -mod=@CSM  when ARMA starts it will load the mod in the @CSM folder. So if you want to add a modfolder, you have to also add the modfolder to your ARMA shortcut by the method just mentioned.

Take a look at the "Target" box in the properties for your ARMA shortcut, it should read:

Quote[/b] ]"C:\program files\bohemia interactive\ArmA\ArmA.exe"
in which case you change it to look like this
Quote[/b] ]"C:\program files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA\ArmA.exe" -mod=@CSM

to use multiple mods, just add a ; in between folder names you added to the ArmA install directory. i.e.:

Quote[/b] ]"C:\program files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA\ArmA.exe" -mod=@CSM;@101st;@IMWM;@ETC

Optionallly you can use the -nosplash switch to get the splash screen out of your face.

Quote[/b] ]"C:\program files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA\ArmA.exe" -mod=@CSM;@101st;@IMWM;@ETC -nosplash

Hope that helps explain it a bit. smile_o.gif

So I could have different startup shortcuts to startup different sets of mods easily right, sounds good. But isn't there a program wich could manage this all, remember someone mentioning this.

^That's a good idea

For 'ol rusty-tech heads like me, I prefer 300 shortcuts on my desktop, that all look the same, but have different mods starting up.

I'm probably a stone's throw away from being diagnosed with O.C.D though whistle.gif lol

Instead of making 500 different mod folders so when you join a server it says blah blah uses mod this, that, this, that. Just make one mod folder and place all your addons in it. You can do it with sound mods, addons, anything. Using Kegetys ArmA Launcher is also a good idea.

This is a bad idea, some addons will not be compatiable with others. For example sound mods overwrite sounds for weapons/vehicles with a config. Another addon might do the same but with different values for certain things in weapons or vehicles. These two together would not work due to one loading instead of another.

There are many other reasons this wouldnt work but thats just one example.

Best to be organized with either a program or having many shortcuts....
