DTED Format

Recommended Posts

The only free topographical data I've been able to find of my own country on the net is Digital Terrain Elevation Data (DTED), Wilbur has the ability to import this data, but I can not figure out how.

Data Link

Does anyone here know how to correctly import this data into Wilbur or any other free software application that can convert this data into a usable format? Png gray-scale would be preferable of course.

Thanks.

DTED = DEM ??

Try Terragen, import there and then from Terragen to wilbur ??

Link to Terragen(its free): http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/

Or

http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/tg2/index.shtml

Terragen can do much more, but just use the terrain functions only.

Maybe, i never worked with DTED or DEM's, have a try and lett us know.

Terragen doesn't seem to be able to import this format, not to my knowledge at least (plugin required??) I did however find via Google search a program called Daylon Leveller which is able to import this format, sadly it is only a trial version, confused_o.gif any more help would be greatly appreciated.

-edit-

Found another program called, TaktusGIS, this seems to corrupt the data upon import. Looks like I could use Daylon Leveller, only problem is that it seems to be limited 150 x 150 pixels in trial version, so I don't know if it's shrinking my files on import giving me reduced quality.

-2nd edit-

Right, seems like the data downloaded from geocomm.com is smaller than what Daylon Leveller is limited too, but still if anyone knows more I'd be happy to hear about it.

I think the format conversion process was described around here earlier?

Have you tried generating an xyz with Microdem?

It was mentioned in the "making of simple landscape" tut at the biki.

I think you can even open the xyz in wilbur and export your 16 bit grayscale.

I did some reading about it but suitable DEM data of interesting areas is not easy to find wich is a big turn off.

DEM and DTED are two different formats. Are there any DEM databases on the net with more detailed topographical data then geocomm.com can provide?

Whoa! Thanks for the links there!

A bit off topic, but still related.. the coordinates provided at geocomm.com does not seem to correlate with Google Earth, I tried entering one coordinate (N 50 60 E 0 10) in GE and it was directed to an area near London England crazy_o.gif

The coordinates at geocomm.com are 10 Deg Grid, I presume that's the same as Decimal Degrees? Either the coordinates are wrong or I am stupid and have overlooked something.

longitude and latitude should be universal, i've been a sailor, would be a bit strange if we all start using different coordinate systems.

You mind sending me that DTED file, i wont redistibute it, just wanne see what i can do with it.

If you register at the link provided in the first post you can get this data free too.

Anyway, site says:

Digital Terrain Elevation Data (DTED) Level 0

Norway 10 Deg Grid: N 50-60, E 0-10

Download:

10 Deg Grid: N 50-60, E 0-10

Checkout http://www.terrainmap.com/

great source for info on almost all terrain data types including dted's,and it also has some format conversion tools too!

Check the free data section to read about dted & aster dems.

personaly i never did get on well using it for opf islands

you can also try global mapper, here that imports dted's and many other formats
