I use a joystick with a throttle control. I go to full throttle, and drop the nose until the chopper stops gaining altitude. Works great.

I think the chopers move "too" fast in Operation Flashpoint, Somtimes it's too fast that the stopping distance is far unrealistic.

Then dont go so fast. I doubt helicopters in reality speed up to max speed when flying.

Well if you want to stop real fast just cut the torque down to zip and pitch up at the same time, small inputs at the time and when you close to speeds of 60 or something, begin to level out and increase the torque until you rest hovering at zero speed.

(sigh)

I do not have a joystick. AND I want to make my cobra FASTER!!! NOT stop or slow or how realistic it is.

I press 'E' for Fast Foward and the top speed I get is 26. The other choppers in the mission zoom past me and go outta sight. SOOO... I need to know how to make my chopper go faster so I can keep up. PLEASE BE AS SPECIFIC AS POSSIBLE. I AM NEWBIE

Thank you

Hmmmm................

Try the Mi-24 Hind, wich is still one of the fastest chopper in the world.

You have to use a combination of throttle and cyclic control to get the maximum speed. That means going to full throttle and nudging the nose down to keep the chopper from climbing. The engine's extra power output is then used for forward motion.

That's how it works in Real Life.

Yes, you are a newbie. What we have been telling you in the earlier post is that CHOPPERS AINT CONTROLLED BY THE E OR W KEY!!!

You pitch the chopper forward to gain speed. Nothing else. You pitch it back to reduce speed. Nothing less. What did you think, choppers have a "increase speed" button and a "brake" button?

You can use the mouse too can't you?

If your max speed is so low you may have accidently turned on Auto-Hover.

As stated before, choppers aren't cars. You don't have an acceleration key smile.gif

Well, basically, there are 3 commands on a chopper :

- throttle (collective), which controls your altitude gain or loss, keys "q" or "z" (I have a non qwerty keyboard, so I may be wrong).

- cyclic, which control you attitude (pitch and bank), control by arrow keys (up arrow to get the nose down, down arrow to get the nose up, left to bank left and right to bank right)

- rudder, which makes your chopper turn level (yaw? I don't remember the exact word), ie it remains horizontal. Usefull to turn when speed is near 0. Otherwise use bank left/right (arrows). I don't remember the keys.

Think at your rotor as a wing (the rotating movement creates some kind of wing). When you pitch nose down, the wing points down, and begin to go forward, and loose altitude. So, to get faster, pitch nose down (up arrow, or mouse movement), and raise collective ("q" key) a little bit. Maintain your nose down to keep your speed up. The more down the nose, the faster you go, and the more collective you have to apply to stay high. In OFP, you have to pitch the nose down EXAGERATLY to gain full speed.

To stop, invert : nose up and collective down. It's a bit tricky at start.

BTW, the best way I found to stop in OFP is to reduce collective to 0, raise the nose, and apply full rudder left or right. After a 180 turn, your chopper is near 0 speed, and it took 5 seconds.

Sorry for the bad english, but it is a it difficult when going "technical"

set 3 c4 charges under it, that should get you going fast

Yaw is the correct word for it.

Helicopters in real life generate a Yaw movment no matter what, so Rudders are constantly used to keep the helicopter from rotating constantly.

In OFP you are lucky enough to be able to take your hand of the stick and just sit there.
