Something a bit off the wall

Recommended Posts

With all of the beautiful mountains in Sahrani, would it be possible to create a semi-realistic Mountaineering mod?

It's great how the game now doesn't allow you to climb anything beyond a certain angle. I was wondering if a bunch of different things could be simulated to create such a mod

- The climbing part, especially on vertical or off-vertical sections. Possibly represented by ice axes, but used to slowly move yourself upwards. Allow for a possibility of slippage if trying to climb too fast.

- A rope linking 2 or more people together, so that one person could belay the other in case of a fall

- Pitons/Cams inserted into the terrain, through which the rope would be attached to hold a fall

I'm just wondering if any of these would be feasible. I don't have much in the way of modding experience, so I'm not sure what exactly could be done to create something like this.

Sounds awesome...

the title kind of is related... like climbing a wall...

not sure how to do that but if i were to guess...

I think it would need be some sort of ladder object which could align itself to a surface. but alot more complicated in how they are put down in a easy way. If you had a menu come up with options to set the top of the ladder x amount of meters,,, and the lader would actually be a rope as far as what you see...

So the simulation of where the rope ends up is also another thing...

There are no rope climbing animations in arma.... so this idea would require alot of people who know the engines in and outs...

sad thing is this will end up in the addon request list which is a blackhole of thread pages which i cant aford to browse through...

good luck though.

An ability to scale cliffs with ropes and ladders is something

I want to get working for my WW2 British commando addon

set. I have yet to investigate how to do it, though, but some

of the "entry tools" and "fastroping" addons that have been

already done might be a good place to start off from.

Perhaps you could make a cliff model with an invisible ladder? That way, you could scale it, but it'd look a bit cack (aside from the animation, you'd look like Spiderman, motoring up the side of a mountain with no climbing gear). Plus, for best results you'd probably have to work it into a custom island, which is a lot of work just to climb some rocks. There's probably a better solution.

If that's addressed to me then as far as I'm concerned the

mere ability to scale cliffs opens up the possibility of doing

more realistic raid missions and is well worth working on for

that reason alone, regardless of how "cack" it might look.

However, I do intend to investigate what might be done to

implement a reasonably realistic generic cliff-climbing feature,

with appropriate anims.

the invisible cliff with ladder would work in a few workarounds... but it would be fixed i imagine when the mission maker sets up the mission.

If I had to do it....

I would do the following...

make a kit...

in the kit would be an assortment of ladder lengths

so you have a 10m 15m 20m etc etc.

The model would first be a day glow orange or whatever colors.

I would use this to position the ladder where it needs to be.

Then once you get it working in game, you swap it out for an invisible one.... That way you can set up a mission with all the ladders in sight until you know its working.

how to do it ingame during a mission is something way out of my scope.

you could still make the ladder seperate and "spawn" in right infront of the player via action menu.

will work that way

Couldnt you make a rope addon however config it like a ladder? So it looks like a rope but can be still climbed up and down?

It would look kind of weird witht he current ladder climbing animations but an animation could be created.

Admit it Faulkner, you want to do a Guns Of Navarone mission.

It wasn't addressed at anyone in particular, I just felt like throwing the idea out.

I agree that functionality is more important than eye-candy, but it's always nice to have both.

One of my biggest questions is, would there be a way to defeat the engine's current climbing limitations, where at a certain angle, you just slide back down the mountain?
