Tom_Anger 0 Posted July 5, 2007 IF matching were to be considered for ARMA, what gametype(s) do you think are worthy for it? Â No coop replies please. I say that as an IF, because trying to find more than 3 servers doing well at the same time with team vs team is not easy to find (however more are playing them these days). Â I don't want to focus on the negativity with current team vs team gaming and would like to look at making something happen. Also, what maps would you consider (designer, map name, etc)? This question can be answered for any gametype even if it does not currently exist for Arma BF2 - Battlefield 2 (Conquest) JO - Joint Operations Typhoon Rising (Advance & Secure) JO - Joint Operations Typhoon Rising (Team King of the Hill) GRAW - Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (Domination) are some examples. Â I am mainly looking for ideas and a discussion on them. Â I think CTF will become a gametype for matching, however, there is a set of people who love CTF and those that do not care for it. What other styles interest you? Â I think we would need to focus on 1-3 gametypes and be consistent with those with a ruleset in place for a matching league. Anyone have ideas or suggestions, let's hear it.
celery 8 Posted July 5, 2007 Matching already is a part of ArmA consisting of C&H and CTF in the form of European Combat League and Gamez-Club. I prefer Frantic.bay's Gc CTF league maps because they are simple in a very good way, easy to adopt but still advanced on the scripting side in the background (I should know ). I wouldn't mind giving a whirl at Capture & Kill and Objective matches in leagues.
Frantic 0 Posted July 5, 2007 Hello Tom_Anger Your are searching for matching types for the TeamWarfare League i guess. So i would like to see a league with Attack&Defend missions, cause its a nice game-type but sadly no one is making missions for that type. The game-types you mentioned in your post can be translated to the common ArmA types, like: Conquest = Capture & Hold Advance & Secure = Attack & Defend Team King of the Hill = Capture & Hold with one holding point Domination = Sector Control The ArmA engine gives us the possibility to create any game-type we can think of. Like Celery mentioned Capture & Kill, that was an own creation of S-0S.bay for OFP and it will be remade for ArmA by me, if i find time. You have to think of that the most clans do not have more than 10 players mostly. In the Gamez-Club league the most matches are played with 5vs5 - 7vs7. So the game-types should be playable for this number of players. I am following the TeamWarfare ArmA forum part and what i have seen there was, that most people would like to see huge battlefields, but a match on a battlefield like whole South Sahrani sounds imo a bit boring with player numbers under 10vs10. To reach bigger numbers like 20vs20, there would be the possibility to have 4 clans fighting. So 2 clans work together against the other 2 clans. But im not sure if thats possible or working. TeamWarfare is a American league site, so you can even make a CTF and C&H league there, cause matches between Europe and America had always time and ping problems. Most important for a league is the support from a mission-maker. You need to find at least one guy who has the urge to support your league with missions and he has to be willing to modify and overwork his missions if needed. Otherwise it happens like in ESL, where the mission-maker gave up, cause of the non stopping criticism at his work. Im wishing you all the best with your project and im looking forward to see new PvP missions, or even better new game-types for ArmA. greetings Frantic
Tom_Anger 0 Posted July 5, 2007 Thanks for the replies. Â All thoughts considered. Â Just trying to see how much effort players want to see be used for this game and matching or even for team vs team play. It looks like servers are picking up, but I am hoping it just isn't a bump in the road only to smooth out with no growth. Â I will monitor what I can and see what it looks like. Â Greetings back at you and Celery, love your maps man. Â I chuckled yesterday when I played the Hotel DM map in Chantico - at the end when you had the funny music played, lol. BigRed 2 Posted July 5, 2007 Personally I am tired of seeing people making ladders for their country only, I have played internationally for 7 years now and have hardy ever had any connection issue (ping or dsync) really only when we played Russians but even then it was because they were on ISDN or 56k and people with those connection shouldn't be playing online anyways. Â To me all ladders/leagues should be international the game was released everywhere so we should play all together only then will teams know who the best in the world is because right now there is a bunch of clans that play PvP but hardly any active in league play. As for matching I would love to play another team 15 v 15 but as Cel and Frantic said not many teams can bring the big numbers so for poeple to enjoy the match the map would have to be small enough for a 8 v 8 or lower to see a lot of action no matter what kind of game style it is. Another idea Tom is to have a tournament or two to see how people enjoy the maps or new ideas you have before a ladder/league starts.
Tom_Anger 0 Posted July 5, 2007 Good stuff Red. One thing we did with Joint Ops is we setup an event just for folks to hop on for a weekend. The map was large and used the gametype AAS. The 3 neutral zones were very large and a video promo helped PR the events. We chose 2 servers worthy of hosting 64-120 players and they filled up on a Friday and lasted at least 2 days before 1 side one the game. because that game dictates how bases are captured it was one complete tug of war struggle. It took some PR'ing to get the job done though. That meant squads setup info on their front page and other league sites made a mention of them. It was like news headlines for the game itself so anyone who searched squad sites or league sites knew about the event. Now that is aside from matching, but did offer tons of fun for players to work together. I remember going to bed at 11pm and waking up around 4am only to see the server still running strong, then checking in a day later with the same map and looking on AMBO stats to see some people with hours invested trying to win. You may consider that a CTI type of thing, but I haven't spent too much time with CTI to confirm. Take care. Just ending my 3rd shift now it's time to go to bed, lol.
