i couldnt really see BIS making it an addon, they might have to release as a new game becuase they could have modified the engine to support better visuals!!!!!

A little birdie told me that the engines will most likely be the same, should IL be a separate install.

Making it a separate install would mean there would be a lot fo duplicity for BIS. Each install would have its own set of the same folders. This is to a coder's disadvantage, generally.

Yes, it would be much easier on all of us if IL would get installed within OFP's existing installation folders. I wish!

From what I understand thus far...there is an expansion coming out that is being developed by CodeMasters which will be a campaign add-on (kinda like Red Hammer)

In regard to Independance lost...perhaps there are engine modifications which will address some of the issues involved with OFP such as network code, Linux support, etc. At this point the answers are up for grabs, but I would gladly purchase a new retail stand alone just on the merit of better multi-play. Lets hope that if it is truly a stand-alone project that it will handle the multiplay aspects alot better. For all we know, IL could be a multiplay only title...hard to say what the real info is at this point. (remember when unreal released with its really crappy network code and was followed by Unreal Tournament as a seperate product smile.gif

You are right. Sometimes i have that with games which are almost the same. And with OFP this will happen too. When IL will be a seperate product, i don't know which to play anymore sad.gif , because i will like them both.

exactly, let's just hope it'll be installed into the same folder as OFP so you can just select the units from the units list in the mission editor confused.gif

That's about what I think is the reason, why they not yet stated whether it will be an Addon or StandAlone. I suppose they 'bought' some networking specialists and these guys are now making a feasability study to replace DirectPlay netcode by a custom netcode supporting Linux and some other requested features. Depending on the effort to spent it might be either a seperate product or just an Addon. I doubt, that they will rework the whole engine and stuff, since I doubt that they want to support three different engines (OFP, IL, VBS1) if it can be done with one.

I don't think that IL will be something like pure MP, since the they would not need a new story line for that... Except it would be something like WW2 Online, what would be a dream come true...

First i was afraid i had to miss the Chinook, but hey...it's there. And i thought it would be without infantry, but i guess you can still run around and steal vehicles. And i hope it is possible actually run around on a flightdeck ship. smile.gif

That's not a chinook, I don't know what it's called, but I know that chopper is being used by the US marines and that it's smaller than the chinook is and is suited for landing on carriers.

It's Sea Hawk or whatever it was called, I can't remember if that was really its name.

Haven't you considered the possibility that IL may have a better engine, but include all the old OFP objects for use?

I mean, if IL has a modified OFP engine, it would probably still be easy to make the old stuff usable in the new engine.

It's not Sea hawk it's CH-46E Sea knight. It's smaller than the chinook, indeed.

Navy is using it.

Sea knight:

Seahawk is like blackhawk. Not the same:

Support of high resolution Textures would be a thing i really wish and hope for, thats one of Flashpoint major drawbacks being stuck at 256x256 px Textures, if IL is an addon or stand alone package comes at second place for me.

Do u think that graphic cards would handle bigger textures. I'm asking because of the big enviroments. confused.gif

Yes, without doubt.

Why? Because the player acts in a bubble, 500m that is i believe, beyond that objects won´t be rendered.

You´ll have to understand that support for high resolution textures doesn´t mean everything (even a leaf) would have a 1024 x 1024px Texture, those high resolution textures are used where appropiate; playermodels and vehicles for example.

Furthermore the visuals are dynamically adjusted to keep the framerate, if it goes below the set boundary the next lower texture resolution will be used.

Most games i play have bigger environments than Flashpoint, with 1024 x1024 px texture support and up, foremost Flightsimulations.

256x256 is a relict out of voodoo times, for a modern game and modern PC´s this is below the computing capability and standard. For low end PC there wouldn´t be a problem, as you could choose the texture resolution, as you can now via the Preferences menu.

Some high-res textures would be nice for people with good PCs, though Voodoo 2-3 users would be stuck on 256x256.

1024x1024 is out of the question though - OFP is too large (the view distance) to be able to use em without messing up speed on midrange-higher PCs. 512x512 for vehicles, player and terrain, with other objects all on 128x128.

OFP view distance is 900m and even that one is too short.

As for the flight simualators. Their enviroment graphic is as bad as it can be. The land doesn't look so real as in OFP. There's not so much trees and they're not so detailed as those in OFP. Buildings in simulators are also not as detailed as those in OFP.There's no ground vehicles, no highly detailed people. You can't compare flight simulator with OFP. Flight simulator enviroments looks good only from over high. And that's ok.

Less pixles is usend on grass, trees, buildings...
