killacom 0 Posted March 1, 2007 hi i recently got a BFG 8800GTS 640mb it seems like it could push more FPS out of it but i am pretty sure it is gettin bottle necked my specs are: P4 3.2 HT 8800GTS 640mb 430 PSU 1 GB DDR 2 775 Foxconn motherboard also if it is could someone point me into the direction of a CPU and Motherboard (if Needed) i have tight budget so the cheaper the better
madmossy 0 Posted March 1, 2007 P4 is a huge bottleneck for the 8800 series, even a c2d 6300 at stock speed doesnt provide enough grunt to really push an 8800 to its limits. If your really after something to utilize your 8800 to the fullest you need to aim for something along the lines of the c2d 6600+ and overclock the crap out of it. telejunky 0 Posted March 1, 2007 I have a P4 530 3Ghz HT and 1GB DDR. With my old X600Pro i played ArmA at very low an 800x600 with max 30fps... With my new X1950Pro graphicscard i can play ArmA with highsettings (object normal, shadow off) with ~30 and 60 mx (60hz TFT ). It runs not that smooth in cities and areas with many units but i apologize that the 512MB limitation which will be solved with the patch 1.05, so that the cpu isn't charged that much anymore rgs telejunky

-CS-SOBR-1st-I-R- 0 Posted March 1, 2007 What I personally pay HIGH attention to is that the DDR2 ram is 800 and not 533 or 667 Mhz and that the CAS times are low ! This is so damn important !! And so is the use of a RAID0 system (optimal with SATA2) which gives you HDD speeds of 120 MB/s in average. If you pay attention to these two points you will have ArmA run much smoother. MamiyaOtaru 1 Posted March 1, 2007 I was futzing with graphics settings and seeing what effect they had on FPS when I realized that dumping 200 units into a mission brought down FPS no matter what I did with graphics settings. CPU is bottlenecking me with a Core 2 6600. For sure a p4 is bottlenecking you

CPU is bottlenecking me with a Core 2 6600. For sure a p4 is bottlenecking you 200 units dumped doesnt say alot, you could dump 200 units in a small area and notice the max fps drop, or have a 100 vs 100 battle. I've used up to 150 in OPF and it would cap the max frame in half but still run stable if the units were used and trigered carefully.
-Puma- 2 Posted March 2, 2007 Actually the bottleneck is not so big (ppl have 8800 and 3800+ and play without huge bottleneck), Arma is just not optimized very well. If dont have cash maybe Overclock the cpu, and buy another stick of ram. btw: have u checked that 400 w PSU is enough for 8800, its a beefy GFX and I think u need bigger Power?? killacom 0 Posted March 2, 2007 the GFX rquires a minimum of 400watts the RAM is 667MHZ also if i were to overclock my P4 640 what frequencys would be best and what software should i use

Well, putting them all in Paraiso brought me down to 25 fps. Still playable for sure. My point was that I graphics settings that would have brought me down to 25 fps by themselves before could then safely be turned on, since I was already at 25 fps, and turning on those graphical features didn't bring it down any lower. A fatter graphics card wouldn't have helped, I'd still be at 25 fps due to all the AI plowing about.
