Sounds in Arma

Recommended Posts

After spending last two evenings playing Arma, I can say for sure, this is the best game to ever hit my computer, hands down.

Now, with that said, Id like to make a few 'observations', that myself and a freind of mine have both agreed dont seem 'right'.

To keep it simple for now, these sound 'issues' seem to mostly be attributed to sounds emmiting from units/vehicles apart from player.

Vehicle sounds do not seem quite 'dynamic' in relation to their position, as they get nearer and nearer, its almost like a drone that gets louder and louder all around you. Also, once they start getting close, they get extremely loud, u cant hear much of anything but the vehicle (not just tanks and helos, but have seen this with russian trucks as well, leading me to surmise most vehicles in Arma may be causing this as well)

Units, gunfire from units to be exact. Again, especially when 'relatively' in close proximity, gunfire from units seems again kind of less 'dynamic', as if the gunfire sound is coming from all around u, unless they are some distance away. The gunfire does not have very appealing sounds, very 'chunky', basically no reverberation, nor any minor echo, like I said, kind of 'chunky', hard to explain, but certainly, again, imho, not very appealing sounding.

I wanted to just make these observations, maybe a patch or upgrade is in the works for near future from BIS, dunno..

for the US trucks (the m813 or whatever is in game) them suckers is LOUD!!! Especially since they generally didn't have mufflers, either. (At least they aren't gasoline engines...)

Yeah, I'm hoping that dynamically changing sound that changes with distance is going to be implemented in a patch soon, because right now you can hear a helo from the other end of a runway as if it were right on top of you.

P.S. ArmA arrived yesterday! Yaaaaay!

As a U.S. Army Infantryman in the 1990's, i got to train with mixed units. I was in Hohenfels, Germany with M1-A2 Abrams, and was a qualified M2-A2 BFV Operator. I was in close, and not so close vicinity of both vehicles as well as mock-up BMPs ( m113's ). Unfortunately as loud as they are in game, isn't close. Even with obstructions by tree's, hills, and valleys and what nots. All of those vehilcles are VERY loud. Even the Deuce and half, and 5-Ton Army Trucks are quite loud. This doesn't include firings of the main, or side guns. I will not ever go downrange in a live-fire excercise with BFV's 25mm without earplugs ever, EVER again. I will add, the droning noise isn't loud enuff, but its quite annoying.

..Syn..

P.S. Qualified operator means i purposely flunked drivers test so i wouldn't be stuck driving the deathtrap, i mean BFV. I ended up being a Dismount m-249 S.A.W. Gunner.

repost since other thread got locked:

Since ArmA supports some of new fancier features of OpenAL like lowpass occlusion filters, why isn't reverb used?

As it is, ArmA gun sounds sound bit "dry", and it would add to immersion a lot especially if it would be location dependent like having more reverb in cities and forests and less in desert.

Or if there is supposed to be EAX reverb effects, they aren't working or very noticeable either on my motherboard integrated Realtek or Creative X-Fi.

I actually noticed some reverb effects when I was yelling out orders that was in a hilly area. It was faint, but something you would totally expect in real life.

I'm actually quite impress by the sound system in ArmA - choppers, for example, if they are obstructed by hills or other objects will sound muffled - just like in real life.

I hear it a lot, but I'm not sure I like it.

It's as if the effects are not great first of all, but it's also too loud just for footsteps and not loud enough for gun fire.

From videos of real life gun fire, there seems to be huge echo/reverb, but EAX with ArmA doesn't come anywhere near that sound. Now THAT would be immersive.

I think there's some echo "baked" into sound samples themselves but not much. But if there's EAX echo, I agree on point that it should be a lot louder in guns.

Yeah! I welcome the sound muffled in ArmA. tounge2.gif

But sometimes I feel the effect too strong. For example, when a chopper is obstructed by small house, the sound is as much muffled as by hills or valleys. wink_o.gif Sound waves don't go straight ahead like light.

It works that way on trees as well, it's great effect but sometimes it's bit funny that lone tree in middle of desert muffles sound when helicopter flies past it smile_o.gif
