Well, Im not sure where the USMC fit into the picture..

Australian and New Zealand forces were sent to East Timor after widespread chaos after their first democratic election.. I'm not particularly clued in on the political workings, but I believe some locals who were loyal to the Indonesians, destabilised the area, and large numbers of the population were forced to flee.

the Aussie and Kiwi forces were their under the UN umbrella.. Once they got there, things settled down, and apart from some minor skirmishes (one aussie soldier was shot through the neck, he assessed the injury as only moderately critical, however he and another soldier were able to repel the attackers, killing several of them in the exchange..)

Im not sure quite how historically accurate iLOST is going to be, but I am assuming it plays a what-if, whereby the Indonesion military were mobilised against the Au/NZ peacekeeprs.

you guys forgot the rubber rading craft! The marines and the navy use em all the time for "Rading" other ships, to making beach landings. Way more important than a heli which is the same as the chinook, only the landing gear are on the side. also go to Navy Site to see more pics, and check their fact file on most of these units. But beware! its in english! biggrin.gif

rubber boats would be cool for spec ops. I want to make some large scale amphibious landings in AAV's or LAV's

If it is based on the conflict on East Timor then it went like this.

Some 25 years ago, Indonesia forcibly took control of the Timorese (which previously was a Portugese territory). This of course sparked resistance by the people who made their own democratic army of freedom fighters. Eventually the world took notice and following a UN held election in which the people voted in favour of autonomy and separation from the Indonesians, there was an outbreak of violence from guerilla fighters which were allegedly trained by the Indonesians, who issued them with armaments in order to put fear into the people. In the course of these attacks, they hit UN offices in East Timor, killing dozens of UN Aid workers. Naturally the world didn't stand for this shit and sent in an Australian and New Zealand sanctioned peacekeeping force in order to clear the shit out and rebuild the country. The Australians even sent in a few hundred police officers in a bid to bring order to chaos. So it has the same possible angles as Flashpoint at the moment. Fight as the "peacekeepers", the freedom fighters or the Indonesian backed guerillas.

It seems Independence Lost is set in the future, after the UN has left East timor..the militas/Indonesians try to re-claim the island and Aussie/US/? forces have to fight them off. The Tigre chopper is intended to come into Australian service in around 2004-5 if I recall correctly..so that may be the time frame we're looking at.

East Timor conflict in a nutshell. When East Timor was having its democractic elections the militia (supposeldy supported by the indonesian government) took control of the island. The UN asked Australia to LEAD a task force to control the area. The group was made up of Aussie, Kiwi, French, Ghurkas, SASR (aussie SAS), and some US forces including a MEU(SOC). This is where the marines became involved as they were there with a LHD and its Helicopter/Harrier detachement
