Falklands

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure if this has been talked about before - haven't had much time to spend in the forum lately - but wouldn't the Falklands conflict be ideal for an Operation Flashpoint addon?

A conflict waged accross a few small islands mainly by infantry with some air support, set in the early 80's.

First defending against the invasion, then possible performing some guerrilla operations and be a part of the sas squad that landed on the glacier and had to be evaced by chopper, then had their evac choppers crash. Finally you could be part of the invasion force.

Yep I agree with you, nobodies even made any skins that could be used sad.gif

The flaklands would make a much better campaign than the gulf war becuase it was mainly infantry with very little support.

LOL 266 posts and you've never seen a Falklands thread? There must have been close to a hundred in the past smile.gif

Moving to A&M smile.gif

So why doesnt anyone make one, all that would be needed is the empty islands and someone to make some skins.

Before you say "why dont you do it then?", the answer is "I dont have enough time and I would be worse than a baby at making" smile.gif

worse than 266 posts you could have pointed out my join date! The reason is that my time is limited thanks to the degree I'm studying so I've tended to stick to just the main forum and don't often delve into the addons one.

Anyway, when (if) map editor is released I think it wouldn't be too hard with a bit of colaboration for the falkland islands to be built, soldiers skinned and a bit of histroy revision for some missions.

LOL very true wink.gif Although before these forums merged with our OFPN forums I only had about 25 posts on the Bis forums wink.gif

There is massive interest in a Falklands mod, I would certainly imagine that as soon as the model importer tool is released people will get themselves organised into proper teams for projects like the Falkland's and others smile.gif

I had close to one thousand posts on the BID forum...then after the two forums merged I had to reapply...now I look like a newbie!

Typical!

Anyway Falklands would be cool if it were possible!

Falklands War would make the best addon for OFP, small Islands, sea, limited air cover, infantry fighting biggrin.gif

I'm working on a mission that sort of recreates the super extendar attack on the atlantic conveyor, but with US and Russian forces.

If anyone is working on a Falklands Mod I've just stumbled upon a really good Falklands resource, info about the units involved, losses, politics and stuff like that, more interestingly they go into quite some depth about the battles, including maps and stuff like that, here's a lil taster...........

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">Leaving C Coy to garrison Goose Green, the Gurkhas moved towards Stanley. On Monday 7th, D Coy sails around to the Fitzroy/Bluff Cove area in the Falkland's coaster "Monsunen" now back in British hands after being taken over by the Royal Navy at Darwin. Over the next two days, the rest of the battalion helicopters in, and then moves to an area south of Mount Challenger in reserve, in time for the 3 Cdo Bde assaults.

In preparation for their attack on Mount William, they again helicopter forward on Sunday 13th to a position just south of Two Sisters. As the Scots Guards battle for Tumbledown, the Gurkhas march along the line of Goat Ridge, and just to the north of Tumbledown ready for their assault, and on the way suffer casualties from Argentine shellfire. As dawn approaches and the Guards have still not secured Tumbledown, it appears the Gurkhas will have to make a daylight assault on Mount William.<span id='postcolor'>

would a falklands mod incompass a A-4 Skyhawk? Next to the MDD F-4 E Phantom II (yes the E model) thats my favorite plane ever. Zippy little bugger that was called the hot-rod or scooter. It was quite nimble (forgot how to spell manouvorable or what ever biggrin.gif )and was one of the vew jets in vietnam that could beat a MiG-17 in a dogfight ...... daggers (mirage under a new name) would be nice too but mb would be a bit to fast and lets forget about super etendards, dont see the fun of having ur ship sunk from 30+ miles with a exocet. confused.gif

Yeah as a mission I agree with you it wouldn't be much fun, but as a cutscene/intro movie it would be superb and could be done very well in Opf by the right person smile.gif

I think it would be so cool for this to be done. The SLR is being made from a edited M16 so theres no excuse. We just need a GMPG to be made from the PK or M60. The empty islands could be used and there isnt a need for many re skinned vehicles becuase it was a low tech war due to the terrain.

madmike: why settle for re-models and re-skins when it can be done properlly to an almost professional level? IMO the most important thing to get correct in a mod based around the falklands are the islands themselves. I'm sure if you just wait a while you'll get more than you hope for smile.gif

Sorry I keep forgeting about oxygen, wow its out.

It would be far bettter than a gulf war mod becuase of the lack of technolegy. Britain had most of its sunk and Argentina had all old equipment bought from the britain such as Bofors and a few ships.

IMHO Falklands/Malvinas war not so low technology conflict. It was low intensity conflict (no actions against mother lands, operation just on relatively limited area(i dont min the rumors about Rio Galegos) with relatively limited power (NO nukes)), but it wasnt low technology conflict. On both sides was some of the wordls most sophissticated equipment (for example NVS, AA misilles etc etc).

British soldiers use they own stuff (Harriers, Blowpipe, etc etc), Argentinians does use equipmnet gained from USA (M-16A1s, AAVP-7s etc etc) and from France (EXOCET).

Im talking about armour being useless becuase of the boggy ground. the british got a few scimiters and scorpians ashore but that was all.

The Rapier AA systems didnt work well due to the electronics systems being damaged.

Argentina had equipment that was well out of date such as Bofos, old battle ships( Bismark), some Ex british frigates.

Blowpipe was difficult to hit stuff with but britian did purchase a load of stingers from the US which helped.

Quite alot of the equipment is already in the game. The terrain would be so nice in flashpoint and it wouldnt be a problem to make(well it would for me).

One thing it would need is trenches that are under objects and sit on the ground like the existing bunkers but have sloping sides to blend in with the real groundwork(this was missing from flashpoint).Hope that makes sense

I never found this an interesting war to read about until I read about it. Some of the bravery on the side was amazing and we only kicked them out becuase they were all conscripts that didnt want to be there.

HINT: BTW if any mod teams or single modelers read this you know you will get oxygen for it smile.gif

Bismark? Are you quite sure about that? wink.gif Sure you dont mean the belgrano?

I think the beauty of a Falklands war mod is that it would be 90% infantry combat without the fear of a horde of T72's rolling down the road and trying to ration your LAW's or crawling to dead enemies to find AT weapons (one of the worst points in OFP).

Not too sure about trenches..I know what you mean but I think OFP's internal collision would not really be good enough to reliably walk across the sections around the trench itself sad.gif

This is exactly that what im talking about, lack of HEAVY FORCE just lot of "cannon foder"  sad.gif

SO it involve lot of loses on lifes sad.gif

But its "fair" war, cause you have chance to react (i know that every was is unfai)

The true story of heroism for me is defense of South Georgia, falklands dependancy, defended just with 22 Royal marines:

...the Argentines were shocked to find out that it had only been a force of 22 Royal Marines that had almost destroyed their invasion plans and damaged their frigate.  Because of this the Royal Marines were treated with great respect by their captors... source: http://www.britains-smallwars.com/Falklands/South-Georgia.html

It was war but soldiers are not machnies they act like humans: Mills (britihs commander) advised Astiz (argentinian commander) that his men had heavily booby-trapped the jetty. Astiz asked that Marine Daniels ( who had placed the booby traps ) would care to remove his unpleasant surprises. Daniels obliged although it was contrary to the Geneva Convention. The only British casualty, Corporal Peters, was taken aboard the Bahia Paraiso and received expert treatment from an Argentine doctor on board
