Heatseeker 0 Posted December 3, 2006 Get rid of the second video card and get a sound card . Or instead of a SLI ready mobo pick another model, if you cut down here and there you can get a single 8800 GTX or GTS in there instead, SLI is a waste of money.. Do you really need the new monitor, speakers, DVD drives and software? What other HW do you have around? edit: Dont rush it, you almost threw away a buckett load of money on that dell piece of shit, take things easy, check prices, benchmarks and even diferent stores . It simply dont cut it in the long run. Preferably get a 7900 or 7900GTX. The best is if you can run either of the cards in SLI (Heatseeker, you are wrong about SLI with Arma). When a game properly supports SLI you get twice the performance of a single card. The 7950GX2 is 2x 7900. The 7950GX2 does not cost twice that of a single 7900 but it perform twice as fast when SLI is properly supported
Khaled 0 Posted December 3, 2006 I've a simple question: what do you guys think about GeForce 7900GS? I'll stick with Armed Assault for few years and I really don't need a DX10 card, but I only want to run ArmA on high or very high video settings and resolution of 800x600x32bit - no need for a higher one. And this 7900GS card is rather cheap - about 200 euros. What do you think?

For 800x600 resolution it should be enough but... but are you sure you can play it like that . @Shadow: Nice setup, im thinking about getting something close to that, but i'll keep my audigy2 for a while and consider a 8800. I might wait till next year to see how much the prices drop since im not in much of a hurry, might get a diferent mobo since i read that the 8800GTX requires 2 pci-e slots? @Jakerod: Keep your previous setup but get one 8800 GTS instead of the two 7950GT's, i just checked the P5NSLI , unlike other models it doesnt support quad core but a conroe will be good for a very long time, The B models seem more future proof. The P5B-V has two pci-e slots but also has that integrated video crap, its not much more expensive than the P5B, what do you guys think ?

jakerod 254 Posted December 3, 2006 your buying 2 power supplys? the case comes with a psu allready. its a different case if its not enough but then you should consider buying a case only. So I don't need the 500w power supply then? To be honest I only went with it because of the recomendation thing. It was only like $25 but I guess things like that add up quickly. Im still not sure if the soundcard is good enough yet or the speakers.
WhoCares 0 Posted December 3, 2006 If you go for a GF8800 you should definatly go for a strong and stable power supply; I wouldn't trust the PSU coming with a case in such a powerful system. These GFX cards need a hell of a lot of power: GF8800 Power consumption Quote[/b] ]...The GeForce 8800 GTX requires you to have a 450 Watt power supply unit if you use it in such a powerful system. You'll also notice that the GTX uses two 6-pin power connectors so I'd like to strongly advise a PSU with dual 12-volts rails here...More importantly than just staring yourself blind on Watts .. you need a PSU with a total 30A rating on the 12 Volts rails. Nvidia recomends 400W PSU, Guru3d review also said that for the GTS version 26 Amps on the 12-volt rails would be more than enough. I dont know how good that PSU is (psu's that come with the cases are not so trust worthy) but he could search for detailed specs and give it a try .

Ups, missed somehow that he choosed the GTS or I would have obviously posted the GTS data  Anyway, 420W just passes the limit and when he builds a new system I'd suggest to play it safe right away. I plan to upgrade my 6600GT 128MB to a 7900GS myself, most likely this one: Xpertvision/Palit GeForce 7900GS (german page) I'd suggest to go for a 512MB card - from all I have seen in the ArmA Photography thread and my own experience with the game in the last days, ArmA seems to benefit a lot from more graphic memory. Though I am not sure how much this would change in 800x600. But of course it also depends on the rest of your system, e.g. CPU+Memory; I have a Athlon64 3500+ and 1GB RAM. I have a rather similar system: Pentium 4 3.0 GHz w/ Hyperthreading, 1 GB of RAM and a GeForce 6600GT PCI-E 256MB videocard. Now I'am getting rather low fps on ArmA - with all video settings on very low, resolution 800x600 I can only get stable 35 fps with the latest patch, but in the wood it drops even under 20. Btw, I get about only 1000 marks on 3DMark06 with this system. Getting a brand new system I can't afford right now, so I think that getting a 7900GS is the best choice, isn't it? DaSquade 0 Posted December 4, 2006 Still looking up info for my computer, but guess i have it more or less. It is more a mather of waiting to see 'In Stock' labels instead of 'Pre-order'... Anyway, i still have a question regarding the max. RAM use of WindowsXP professional. Quote[/b] ]Shadow:All WinXP editions support up to 3GB RAM. All Vista 32-bit editions support up 4GB RAM. 64-bit basic edition 8GB, 16GB for the Premium edition and 128GB for the Business and Ultimate editions. Business and Ultimate might support more than 128GB RAM but thats the most MS have tested so far. Source (blog by MS employee) It is not that i don't believe you (or your source) but why is the Windows site: (WindowsXP professional features site) meantioning WindowsXP 'professional' can support max. 4Gb ram Quote[/b] ]Scalable memory and processor supportSupports up to 4 gigabytes (GB) of RAM and up to two symmetric multiprocessors. ? CameronMcDonald 146 Posted December 5, 2006 I said that before. I thought the 64-bit XP Pro can handle 4GB RAM since it's a 64-bit OS, whereas normal XP is usually only 32. At least I think that's right.
DaSquade 0 Posted December 5, 2006 Sorry for my lack of detailed info. I'm was refurring to WindowsXP pro 32bit (not 64bit or any other version up or lower)... After checking with a clan mate, he is running 4Gb Rams on his WindowsXP pro (forgot to ask if it was 64bit or 32bit though :s)... From that same link (Microsoft Windows info site): Quote[/b] ]Comparing 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows:Currently, 32-bit editions of Windows are capable of supporting up to 4 gigabytes (GB) of system memory, with up to 2 GB of dedicated memory per process...
