Helicopter cockpit instrumentation improvements?

Recommended Posts

I've seen a Armed Assault video released during E3 where it shown the cockpit of an AH-1Z but the cockpit (the 2 MFDs to be more exact) didn't show anything. So the objective of this thread is to ask if there will be any improvements on Helicopter cockpits such as working MFDs where for example the image of the targeting FLIR is shown or other kind information for that matter or will the cockpits be exactly like they were in OPF (MFDs didn't show anything)?

Note that I'm not asking that the helicopter cockpits in Armed Assault have exactly the same intrumentation as their real counterparts or exactly like in a dedicated helicopter/flight simulator (such as Jane's LB2) but I'm asking for at least some improvements or more basic intrumentation (or MFD pages) such as the already mentioned targeting FLIR image or a radar/missile warning system.

Anyway what I'm asking is, will there be improvements in helicopters cockpits intrumentation and if yes, what will they be?

Thanks in advance for replies...

This pic makes me think that instrumentation is something they're working on.

See this, this, and this for examples of the current instrumentation capability in FP. It can be done with a bit of work, minus a few things (such as having a camera view applied to the MFD), but on the whole, it is possible already.

Id doubt it will be different from OFP...Game2 might have 3d instrumentation.

Here is something from a arma video that LOOKS LIKE a instrument panel

Yes, that's the video that I saw which shows the interior of an AH-1Z cockpit. If you notice the MFDs don't show anything at all (they are like they were shut down) so my question basically is, will those MFDs work and if yes how will they work and what will they show?

@Franze:

Once I've downloaded an Addon Comanche which looked great since the MFDs showed some information and it had an audio missile aproach warning system (I think it was also implemented visually on the MFDs but I'm not sure, it's been a while since I don't play with that helo or any OPF addon for that matter) and there was also an addon Blackhawk which had a Moving Map displaying on a MFD.

These are all great work and I wonder if BIS will implement some of this work and maybe some improved capabilities on the intrumentation of their helicopters for Armed Assault?

I don't think BIS will do that; it'd be outside of the scope for their game. Remember that FP is primarily an infantry simulation.

The units you're thinking of are BAS Black Hawks and DKMM's Comanche.

i would really be happy if they put in a few extra stuff in the aircrafts and choppers and stuff. But i wouldn't cry that much if it didn't happen. tounge2.gif

i just hope that looking at mfd's and stuff wouldn't be dead critically needed, only at night time or something.. biggrin_o.gif

As long as we get the GPS map system so i dont have to press "M" all the time to look at the map.

ArmA 2 is awesome in all aspects of the game!

I love how they've included UH Huey and Mil Mi-24 Hind D, V & P!

However cockpit guages are very limited. The AI (attitude indicator) only shows the bank/roll (no pitch) of the chopper and also the VVI (VSI) doesn't work on most choppers or isn't included.

As all of you helicopter lovers out there would agree with me, if I were to suggest that Bohemia upgrade ArmA2 by including a full pitch+bank AI and a full working VVI. These are the only real guages needed for anyone really interested in wanting to fly as close to a real chopper SIM as possible.

The airspeed and Radar altimeter/Barometric altimeter would be all nice to haves, but are (A) not totally necessary for experienced pilots and (B) not needed anyway because of the digital reading in top left of display.

It all depends on the work being done to ArmA and if people see it worth updating. Personally I think it is. To have such an excellent game and not fix these small things would be such ashame!

If any changes were to be done in the actual flight of the choppers, I'd also say for the collective to be much more sensitive and adjust the chopper torque with more accuracy. Now we are starting to see the real use of the VVI... :bounce3:

I must admit, the VVI is tolerable in the Mi-8 Hip as was the UH-60 in ArmA (#1).

Other than that, for me, excellent work Bohemia!!

cheers

I realised the Mi-8 Hip has a VSI working as expected. The Mi-24 Hind has its VSI used to reflect cyclic pitch!? The UH-60 Blackhawk doesn't have any sort of VSI, but a much more correct AI, so collective is kinda not such a worry.

1. Don't dig up old threads.

2. This is not the ArmA2 discussion forum.
