Skye Island

Hi folks, just wanted to show the recent work I've been doing on my island Skye and to hear your feedback. At the moment im changing the vegetation mainly to resistance ones for more realism, made some new roads based on the resistance ones but with a center line. I've also used a grass addon called erba which I've slightly modified to make the landscape seem more realistic but in doing so along with placing it all over, there is quite a large drop in fps due to the number of objects.

Im hoping this problem will be solved when Armed Assault comes out which I believe handle's the terrain rendering better? At the moment I've only done a section beside the town with the long bridge.

Very nice waterman biggrin_o.gif Looks like there might be a return of 'The Skye Virus!' (hope at least a few of you remember my old mission tounge_o.gif )

I wouldnt hold your breath for AA though infomation of OFP>AA combatibliety is still pretty vauge.

Very nice work Waterman. Is the Inv grass on the island by default or did you add it to those screens? I heard that there was some problems in it, like bullets hitting invisible walls, not sure though. The island looks brilliant anyway. smile_o.gif I'm pleased to hear that you're still working on it.

Thanks guys. What do you mean Hawkins? I added the grass in WRPtool and no in the editor if thats what your meaning. Also so far I haven't recognised bullets etc hitting invisible walls.

BTW, could anyone recomend a better grass addon (i.e. one that looks more realistic and perhaps less laggy)? This is the only one that I can see is available to the public at the minute.

EDIT - Here's a new pic showing the fuel station with on/off 'road' sections using the same texture as on the fuel station itself.

looking impressive, i like the sidewalks or pavements as i call them. Funny enough I only just aquired the old Sky last week for the first time and thought it was cool.

I remember it well. It was one of my all time favorite missions. I haven't played it in a long time, though... I lost it.

If it works, then I must be mistaken. smile_o.gif I just remembered that there was some grass addon that had invisible walls that stopped bullets, but it must've got updated or it's not the one you are using. smile_o.gif

As for grass addons, I recommend checkin the latest Ilo Ilo (or any other version that has been released of it) for grass. It has some very nice fields that I too have personally edited to suit my needs. It's also free to use, as Ebud has stated. smile_o.gif

The new Dak Seang island also has some pretty neat looking grasses, I recommend those too.

some cars parked alog the sidewalks and all smile_o.gif

would be awesome!

i like the pics with little stone walls around the edges of the roads, even though im concerned with how it would go for a.i driving cars along those roads if there is enough space for them to navigate tounge_o.gif

anyways great work on the island so far. Nice touch with the on off ramps for the fuel station, very nice idea there xmas_o.gif

Those pictures look impressive indeed, I hope all previous Skye missions will be backward compatible, and this mission will be addon-free (IE include the grass / texture in the PBO)

@Hawkins: Thx for the info, the ilo grass seems to be too 'tropical' or not suitable for my European style island (based on Scottish landscape features). The grass on Dak Seang look really nice though although a little bit 'light coloured', so I might end up using it on higher ground.

@Commando, hope u have a good PC, cause I dont get much more than 20fps and I got P4 3.2Ghz, 512MB PC3200 ram and a 128MB ATI Radeon 9700 mobility. Im trying to squeeze as much fps out as possible but I dont want to compensate on the realism.

@Gandalf: Yeh, the missions should be, the landscape hasn't changed at all really apart from the new objects introduced. I'll probably make more fields though with the stone walls. About including the addons within the island pbo, that might be something I'll do later when its nearly finished. It would take quite a while re-configuring all the models into one pbo I would imagine.

Well there IS a problem with this grass on flat terrain. To check it out just start a desert island mission place some grass and 2 units and try to shoot somebody lying on the ground. There seems to be less problems when this grass is on the slopes etc.

Sorry but I dont get this problem... I tried it numerous times, but I always managed to kill him. Maybe its because i've modified it slightly but all I've done to it was to increase the resolutions of the LOD's so that they are more detailed for a greater distance.

I'll maybe release a beta of it with just the north section, to see you can find any bugs. ATM, there are 2 bugs with the roads which I'll try and fix, one being that AI doesn't follow it yet and the second being that the roads 'dissappear' if damaged. I assume the last one can be fixed by increasing the armour etc though.

Well, that's great, I love the idea of grass in OFP and it would be a shame if such a wonderfull island was unplayable because of some little bug. Good luck in your work.

i like the idea of grass. & appreciate your trying to make it as realistic as possible, but in all seriousness, that grass looks like crap, especially from the air, & much worse so up close. i'd just finish updating the resistance objects & just wait a little bit for the 1invasion 44 phase one, their grass is amazing.

Yeah our grass is quite amazing I must say, anyway maybe by any luck Jojimbo migth allow you to use our grass .... but I suppose this agreement would be that you are disallowed to release anything before we have released phase I

Yeh, I haven't asked for permission yet, so I am not going to release anything yet. But anyway, that grass addon has been available for the community for a long time now, why hold it back again? Check this: http://ofp.gamezone.cz/index.php?showthis=5458

Was just reading this article, and it does seem that existing addons will port easily to the new games. Hopefully this will mean that by the time Im finished this version, Armed Assault will be out and will be able to handle it better.

Nice to hear you're working on yet another Skye Island incarnation... I still prefer Skye v1.2 the best, because it's got the nice mountain...
