I'm hoping someone from one of the Mods that focus on Russian units (RHS and ORCS) will shed some light on the dearth of Paratroopers wearing the Soft style of helmet.

Did (do?) the paratroopers actually wear the steel helms when jumping?

They *might* use both I guess. It's not comfortable, but possible. Tested!

They did, and still do use them I think, the soft ones that is. Just plain daft to jump from a plane with a bowl of steel on yer gulliver. It's pretty much like the tank-helmet. But I think these are smaller as they don't have a radio (mic and stuff) built in.

Tan summer weight helmets were done away with they just use tank helmets with the electtronics removed. Tan ones from old VSR days of the Soviet airborne forces.

That's a paratrooper 'helmet' - the tanker helmets have electronics inside of them such as a throat mic. etc. I have about 10 of these plus two Cold War era uniforms, there are all kinds of different styles. The most intriguing of them all was a helmet with a boom mic made of wood!

Also, Iraqi tanker crews have ventilated hats that look just like the russian ones. They are made of mesh material.
