Flugel 0 Posted January 14, 2002 About this preview: ============================= Long boring/dull review wich contains some facts, some shit and lots of misspelling & grammar errors. ============================= DEMO / FULL Because of problems with the link, I accidently downloaded the full version of Between The Lines. Because of this being warez (I actually didnt pay for it), I will remove the package within 24 hours and use the Add-On for previewing purposes only. I recommend you to download the demo for previewing because of legal issues. You find find a link to the demo here. BETWEEN THE LINES ... is a commercial Operation Flashpoint Add-On, wich contains 3 campaigns. The product is not associated in any way with the creators of Operation Flashpoint, a so called unofficial expansion pack. INSTALLATION Installing is as easy as it goes: You just run the Install Wizard, it automaticly detects wich directory you have installed Operation Flashpoint in, and there you go. Since I downloaded it instead of ordering, I did not have the manual, I found the lack of a readme file disturbing. Also, no new icons were created during setup so I was wondering how to start the campaigns. MY FIRST GAME I play games regulary, but it took me about 10 minutes to find out how to run one of the three Between the Lines campaigns (How about a Readme.txt?). It appears that you have to click Campaign in the main menu, and then have to scroll your way through the available campaigns using the white arrow above. I first started with the first campaign, called Between the Lines. I see an introduction of all the creators involved (credits). Nice to see but not usual in a commercial product. Then the intro starts. The first thing that bothered me is the enourmous lag! It all runs very choppy on my P3 800, 512MB SDR, GeForce256. I never got past 8fps, what should be at least 24fps in the official campaign. Maybe too much objects per level? When the intro was finished (nicely made by the way but could have done better), I was able to play. I had to escape an encampment. And again, it all runs very slow. The guards didnt care that I was leaving my prison, but started shooting at me when I came too close to the gate... FURTHER IMPRESSIONS From what I played, the storyline looks very original but I miss a little more drama in the intro (maybe it is just not doable within the OFP engine). The camp in level 1 looks good but the AI triggers/waypoints are a bit silly in my opinion. Also, the placement of the gate and vehicles (with driver inside!? what are they waiting for?) looks a bit illogical to me. But I also noticed some good points, like an original soundtrack and some nice scripting (like the screen you will see when you die in the Between The Lines Campaign. CONCLUSION You might think I can do nothing but complain about this product, and I cant deny that. It's not that Between The Lines is a bad campaign (okay, actually 3 campaigns)! In fact, it might be supreme to the official one, but I have to see that when my new AMD LightningStorm 3600+, 4GB RAM with GeForce 6 system arrives. I am pretty sure the team invested a lot of good work and hard efforts into this campaign, and I am ready to find out, its just that my system isnt. Besides that, it is made by OFP fans wich I hate to put down, but since it is required to pay for such an add-on, I think the quality of the add-on should be as good or better than the official one. Any one with a fast system played the add-on? So a warning goes out to everyone: First try the demo, then see! ====================== Anyone else played this add-on or "accidently" downloaded it? Please share your first impressions here. I'm still not sure wether to buy it or not. Comments? (Not about my grammar and typo's please, I'm Dutch and only 17.. )
Placebo 29 Posted January 14, 2002 I believe the general consensus from those that had tried the demo and/or full version were that this "addon" was a pile of shite

Placebo 29 Posted January 14, 2002 Anyways Flugel, instead of reviewing cheap-assed-rip-off addons wouldn't you much rather be a mission reviewer for OFPN? Go on you know you want to Go on, Go on, Go on, Go on, Go on, Go on, Go on, Go on, Go on. (as voted most annoying advert of 2001).

Warez is illegal even if you keep it on your computer for a second.

wind 0 Posted January 15, 2002 To be fair, BTL isn't that bad, at least it's A LOT better than FMC Fury campaign (though I can't really complain something free ) Actually, in term of difficulty BTL is at least on par with Red Hammer. Since you play as resistance fighter, there aren't much arsenal on your hands. Most of the time you have to avoid frontal battle and fleeing is your last thing can do. These are somethings official campaigns generally lacks. Some mission objectives are quite creative indeed. Overally it's not up to the level of offical campaigns, but not far away. BTW, I've tried ULTCO mission pack too, very impressive. It successfully gives you the feeling of being in the army. Most missions are very well written. The only shortcoming is some missions don't end due to deserted soldiers or triggers which never happen. Luckily (ironically) it's only avilable as single missions so you can simply skip them. For anyone who are interested in FMC Fury campaign and ULTCO mission pack, head for Avon's lady FAQ to have a look. I think she is still hosting them. wind 0 Posted January 15, 2002 Argg..... forgot to mention the framerate of BTL. I haven't encountered any performance problem with BTL. Maybe my TB1.4/512MB DDR/GF3 setup is still relatively strong by today's standard.

Who said anything about Between the Lines containing spelling errors?? Anyway, it's good to hear more opinions. >Maybe its chuggy cos u cant set ur shit up right foo! i have >worse specs then u and my shit runs fkn sweet. Nice.. I know how to "set my shit up" properly but since the system I use for playing OFP is an office machine, I wont tweak it for a whole lot of reasons. You might be right about a couple of things, but this is just how I experienced Between the Lines myself... Heh.. Oh well..
Antichrist 0 Posted January 15, 2002 Between the Lines is absolute crap!!!!! That is why warez should be legal so u can try out shite like that before buying it!!!!!!!!!!
