SpecOp to Spec Cop

Shooting is also a bitch. I heard the officers scream at you for shit like missing shots.

I guess knowing how to fire a gun, without missing your target is vital for a police officer. It should be, atleast crazy_o.gif

lol, I dont think they have a SWAT unit

They have a little Special Responce type truck, which I guess could act like a SWAT type team. Would be cool working on this, but you probably would'nt get many calls in.

Am going for a SWAT cop when i turn 18 smile_o.gif All you do is practice everyday and when the call comes in you get all tact and shit.Cop is ok, but they deal with alot of ppl and shit am going to have to go through that phase too in order for SWAT. Busting ppl up would be cool but its dangerous you never know who the hell your messing with. I would recommend that movie COLORS for you specop it shows the life of cops on a daily basis pretty good.

Always do what you want. no one will stop you from becoming one but yourself.

Quote[/b] ]basically I'm not worried about the actual job, but GETTING the job is what's going to be my difficult part.

Getting the job can be hardest part! The competition is intense! I've easily seen 200 - 300 applicants for one position on many occaisions. So don't get discouraged by rejection. If it's something you really want to do, keep sending out applications. After you get in keep your eyes and ears open. College doesn't prepare you for the job and the recruit academy only covers the bare basics. Field Training is where you learn most of your stuff (and that's still not enough).

Patrol work (like swat work) is 90 boredom. It's the good patrol officers who can interpret what they see. Did the guy walking up to that car just do the "look over each shoulder" to see if anyone's paying attention to him? Why is this guy walking by a closed business at 3:00 AM? The passengers in the car that just pulled up are pointedly not looking at my patrol car.... why is that? Or why are they seriously rubber-necking to see if I'm pulling out after them. It's a million things that can be learned from people-watching. Just sit down and watch a crowd sometime. Pick people out that just don't belong or are behaving in a subtly different manner. After you do it enough, you can predict what they are up to before they do it.

Lazy patrol officers drive a squad car for 8 hours waiting to get dispatched to something. One of the things you will be graded on, during field training, is your ability to generate S.I.F.A. (self initiated field activity). So turn off the tunes, roll down the windows, and really pay attention to what's going on around you. Don't be afraid to drive a little slower than you would in your personal car. You see twice as much at 20 miles per than you see at 40.

All the undercover/swat crap aside. Policing is about dealing with people when they are at their worst. If you can deal with and handle people, without pissing everyone off, you'll do just fine. You won't get rich. You won't be famous. But every once in a while you get to do something really good. Don't expect the public to love for it though. If you want to be adored, go be a fireman. Police work is NOT the people pleasing business.

Be observant, be smart, and remember to always be courteous. Always have plan to kill everyone you meet.

But most of all have a sense of humor and don't be too easily offended. People do some hilarious stuff even if they don't always see the humor in it!

S.W.A.T. (S.R.T. or whatever the agency decides to call them) is a tough job. It involves a lot of extra training in addition to your regular work. Very, very, very few agencies have officers on full time SWAT duty. Normally that's an extra. You put in for an open SWAT position and, if accepted, you go to the special schools. You do all this in addition to your normal patrol work. When a SWAT call goes out, you grab your gear bag from the trunk, change out of your uniform, and prepare to go sit on a perimeter for the next 2-20 hours during which something may or may not happen during the stand off.

It's a tough job, but not in they way the media portrays it. I mean how alert are you going to be after lying prone for 10 hours covering the windows on the east side of the building? You have to keep yourself alert and prepared for potential violence. But almost all SWAT calls end without any shots fired.

Sgt Jones is giving very sensible advice. Listen to him. When I was a teenager I used to work on the doors of clubs etc. Shitty bar work, you know. Good doormen are observant doormen, they know what is going on around them all the time. If you blunder through in your own little world not focusing on the outside world - it could be damaging to your health.

On a lighters note - Cops is absolutely hilarious.

I watched an episode and the commentator ... well let's call him the narrator, was just playing it up major.

Example

Narrator - "This delinquent youth shows his defiance by accelerating in a highly built up area, this is really a dangerous situation for the cops, they need to pull back a bit."

The car accelerates down one of those massive LA boulevard roads, a very wide road, it is doing about 25 mph....

Narrator - "The youth knows these roads like the back of his hand. He is now nearing his home. Now other youths are cheering him on while he recklessly speeds down the road at amazing speed"

Considering his mates were running alongside the car, it can't have been that fast. We see boy racers in the UK doing over a hundred in built up areas, this guy was doing around 20.

"A dastardly clever and brave officer rams him in the right side trying to knock him off the road - OH WHAT A COLLISION.... The officer is alright thank the heavens, god bless America."

Bumper cars is generally more violent that that bump. The cars were just really badly driven on both sides, probably due to using automatic transmission which reduces control of the car.

Anyway - this absurd chase lasted for around 2 hours, the suspect plodding around the streets at tortoise speed with a trail of around 10 police cars behind it. Of course it ended with the usual: stupid runaway trying to drive through a 8 ton firetruck and then the skinny guy getting ripped from the car by 6 heavy weight champions and losing his anal virginity to several guns.

Hahaha..... biggrin_o.gif That's hilarious!

- But also true! I've reacted in the same way several times when watching "Cop" series on the telly. It's like - come on what's the fuzz abuot! I have a feeling I would be shot down had I driven like I usually do over there somewhere.......or two life sentences without parole....

Thanks everybody for telling me all that you know smile_o.gif  I asked others as well, and they said the job is pretty boring.

I changed my mind in becoming a Police officer, as it seems I would be going through college, and police academy for nothing at all.

Instead, I think I will be a Fire-fighter instead.  I am going for something different in my life than everybody else...I would hate to sit at a computer desk every day, drive into the same parking lot every day, sit at the same booth every day, be on the same computer every day..

Besides I think it's alot more easy to become a Fireman, and alot more rewarding.

Saving peoples lives?  and putting out big ass fires?

That's my idea of a job I would love to have...

Hmm I think you need to speak to a career advisor rather than a forum thread if you can't decide what you want to be when you grow up smile_o.gif
