Tovarish 0 Posted October 10, 2004 I was going to ask how you can call it the pride of your navy, but after reading your summary of Swedish military naval history....nuff said.
Blake 0 Posted October 10, 2004 Oh yes the Wasa-ship been there years and years ago, seems that the restoration has advanced a bit since those days. Quote[/b] ] Yet, out of several hundred battles fought, we've won less than a dozen. It's quite amazing, one would think that we would have won more by just pure chance, but no. Â One disaster after another. Our navy has been beaten countless times by smaller, weaker forces Don't be so hard on yourself, the biggest sea battle in history of Baltic sea at 1790 Ruotsinsalmi near Kotka was Swedish victory. Over 500 ships participated. But that didn't prevend disaster 20 years after it... Quote[/b] ]We're for instance the only ones in history that have actually succeeded to defeat Russia and occupy Moscow One could also argue that Russia has never been in such chaos as back then... Â Napoleon also took Moscow although it was burned of course.
Bordoy 0 Posted October 10, 2004 @ Oct. 09 2004,23:47)] @ Oct. 09 2004,15:44)]edit: i am planing on organizing some celebration of Hastings victory on location soon ?  ;P  J/K I'll be celebrating Agincourt  next time the date come along, hehe, lol. Would you celebrate a victorious battle in a war you ultimately lost ?  ;) Quote[/b] ]On a historic point, they were the Normans (from Normandy) who invaded, were they known as the French then? But if your from Normandy then celebrate. What can i celebrate as Mercian not Englishman? well defining France as such is quite controversial and quite arbitrary even if its generally admitted that the foundation of France is the kingdom of the Franks and Normans had pledged allegiance to the king Charles III (aka "le simple" aka "de France"). whatever the arbitrary answer you'd give, i can legitimately celebrate hastings, see the flag in my sig and this ;P All these lines , all this long serious (hmmm not that serious) post for nothing : rest assured that i was kidding, i do not intend on organizing some Hastings celebrations  That's good to hear. Celebrate in your mind, lmao.
red oct 2 Posted October 10, 2004 Speaking of defeats, there's one interesting thing with the Swedish navy. Sweden has during the centuries for longer periods had a very strong military. In the 17th century we held a good portion of Europe (We're for instance the only ones in history that have actually succeeded to defeat Russia and occupy Moscow) etc So we were a very formidable power - in periods the strongest in Europe (and hence probably the world). Our navy however has always been a disaster. We've always dumped a shitload of money into it. More than once it was the biggest and most powerful in the world. Yet, out of several hundred battles fought, we've won less than a dozen. It's quite amazing, one would think that we would have won more by just pure chance, but no. One disaster after another. Our navy has been beaten countless times by smaller, weaker forces wasn't that when Alexander the Great was Czar? he built a large navy that defeated Sweden and King of Sweden was killed in one of the battles. watched a serries on the History channel about the Czars of Russia. denoir 0 Posted October 10, 2004 wasn't that when Alexander the Great was Czar? he built a large navy that defeated Sweden and King of Sweden was killed in one of the battles. watched a serries on the History channel about the Czars of Russia. Um, ehh.. err.. Alexander the Great was a Macedonian ruler who lived some 300 years BC. There were three Russian Alexander Czars (I, II & III). Sweden was only involved with number 1 during the "Finnish war" 1808-1809. It was a clear-cut Russian invasion and we lost Finland to them. There were no major sea battles there and the Swedish king was certainly not killed. Only two Swedish kings have died in battle (in more modern history year 1500 and on). It was Gustav II Adolf who died on a battlefield in Germany in 1632, fighting the Catholics and Karl XII who was killed in Norway fighting the Danish. Ah, the good old time when a leader decided to make his country to go to war , he moved to the battlefield himself with his armies. I wonder if our today leaders could one day have the same guts when they decide to engage their countries in a war. It would have been a good way to assume and understand really their own decisions, like those old leaders did often dying with their soldiers due to their mistake. Maybe they would think a bit more. Balschoiw 0 Posted October 10, 2004 Germany hopped into naval affairs pretty late. We preferred to hop around with wild beards within trees Anyway I have to say that we pushed it really hard later on: Bismarck Tirpitz Graf Spee
red oct 2 Posted October 10, 2004 meh, the Bismarck nothing compared to Japans Battleships the Yamato and Musashi Musashi Yamato it took 20 bombs and torpedo's to sink the Yamato and the Musashi took 19 torpedo's and 17 bombs before going under. real shame we couldn't have captured either of them. those had to have been the greatest war ships ever made.
