calm_terror 0 Posted July 18, 2004 yes the F-117 can slip past most anytihng at NIGHT but durign the first gulf war the f-117 was also back up by many Eletronic Warfare aircraft used to jam enemy radar. when the f-117 flies alone it is much easier to see and once you see it then it is dead. The F-117 is nto the g-d's gift of jets. it is not evne a fighter like it is suppost to be. and to compare it's service vs 3rd world countries with limited tech and training. does not mean it is the best plane. put it up agaienst a large well equiped country it will not do as good.. the serbs where so so they had limited tech and there has bene rumors that on the f-117 shoot down that they got some new radar type systems from russia to test with also russian radar and sam crews. but that is not confirmed. but the F-117 during day is a very easy target for anytihng that cna visual see it once you see it laser paint it and it is screwed.. Everything you just said is, for the most part true. However, when used in conjunction with offensive off-board jamming support, "threading the needle" NOE penetration techniques, and the use of zero-visibility flying conditions- it's still very effective. Now, in comparison to more modern LO platforms like the B-2, F/A-22, and F/A-35, the F-117 is getting a little long in the tooth and may be practically obselete. But it's still very effective agaisnt most nations that the US is likely to face in combat for the forseeable future, including North Korea, and Iran. Keep in mind that it can also be upgraded and equipped with newer weapons to maintain it's mission effectiveness in the future. There is no reason the Nighthawk couldn't be loaded with ARM's and used as an dedicated LO Wild Weasel platform.
Unhappy customer 0 Posted July 18, 2004 I don't think that anyone ever ment for the Nighthawk to operate during daylight. Think of the F-117 like a Ninja warrior. You wouldn't send a lone Ninja out in the daylight in an open field to face 4,000 enemy soldiers. Instead you wait for nightfall, and send the Ninja into the enemy camp to assasinate their leader, or poison their food supply. This is the way of the Nighthawk. It only carries 2 2,000 lb bombs, it can't go supersonic, and it has no defensive armament. But when it slips past your air defenses in the darkness of night, knocks out a command and control center, and kills your top Airforce brass, then you can understand why this aircraft is so feared.... FerretFangs 0 Posted July 18, 2004 And it's still well ahead of most other nation's technologies. It's like twenty years older than than the B-2, and yet no other nations have progressed far enough to make their own LO combat aircraft, or have been able to counter it. Do you really think the Russians would have nothing like the F117? After the Nighthawk was shot down, who do you think would have been "acquiring" as much of the RAM as possible? Trust me, Russia and China have the technology. Maybe they don't rate it as highly as you do though. (A thought: manually operated Shilka vs day-flying Nighthawk? Ouch.) I understand "Kolchuga" passive radar can detect stealth bombers, by dint of detecting electronic emissions. That's why the US were kicking up with the Ukraine, who they suspected of selling the radar; imagine the loss of life if the Iraqis got hold of those babies. calm_terror 0 Posted July 20, 2004 both china and russia do that stealth tech. just russia's military is strapped for cash and china is just secret and does not show it most high tech jets off nor fly them aroudn where people can see.. remember just because no one has seen it used doe snto mean they don't have it. like most nuclear countries only a small hand full have actual set one off. and only 1 country has used them in hostility.
