barret 0 Posted January 5, 2002 Ok, as I have been working night and day for my 2 newest campaigns ( MARINES, AND NAVY SEALS) I just  wanted to see how realistic ofp was. So, while I was reading my naval science book (american naval science) it said that the Sea Knight heli can float. Well the Chinook is the same thing cept it is made for land ops instead of watery stuff. But I tried to make it float/go in the water. And Guess what, IT WORKED! My pilot, gunner, and passengers didn't get injured. I even got an image for ya (the back round is the hole thingy for  my marines mission. Go To: My Screen SHotty and then go to the my screen shots page
Damage Inc 0 Posted January 5, 2002 That's a great image! (Tripod doesn't allow hotlinking)
Damage Inc 0 Posted January 5, 2002 I'm just wondering if this is realism or a bug.

r71 0 Posted January 5, 2002 No realism about it at all, its a major bug with all helis. You can sink them all then come back out of the water with no problem.
barret 0 Posted January 5, 2002 Did you try shutting off the engine? the chinook floats. also, the mi17 sinks like a rock,a dn everyone dies when I try.

Rogue2020 0 Posted January 6, 2002 I can't say it's a bug because my choppers crash in water...that thing doesn't....sure it sinks way to far but #### it works...
barret 0 Posted January 6, 2002 what choppers did you use?
barret 0 Posted January 6, 2002 oh, and because yesterday when i had posted this, I got about 6 im's asking on how to take screen shots, and so Ill post it here. First Press the Print Screen Key, which is usually above the number pad on the right. Then exit out of the screen by pressing THE ALT AND TAB BUTTON TOGETHER, and then GOING TO PAINT AND PASTING INT THERE. If you have a trouble of pasting the screenine, go and pick a differn't cursor and try right clicking the print screen until you get thescreen shot on the print screen, then you can edit and save it

<span id='postcolor'> I saved the pic from your tripod server and uploaded it to my virtualave account which allows external posting of pics (hotlinking if you like)
Damage Inc 0 Posted January 6, 2002 Allowing hotlinking is rare on free webspace hosts these days (it's a good thing I have a free host that allows it )
Placebo 29 Posted January 6, 2002 Yup I know, the best host is one provided by your own ISP but they tend not to give much space away, virtualave is good but now you have to sign up with your credit card as they charge you if you go over the 50mb space or use more than 1gb bandwidth per month, when I signed up years ago they never asked for that so I dunno what would happen if I went over the limits
Mr ThunderMakeR 0 Posted January 6, 2002 This is a picture of a Chinook (not Sea Knight) from over at FAS: Theres no info about its floating capability there though...Anyone know where I can read up on this??
barret 0 Posted January 7, 2002 You can read about the sea knights floating capability in the njrotc naval science books, and the U.S Navy site , and find something on the Sea knight on fas. The Chinook isn't very much differnt than the Sea Knight sept what they hold is the diff.
Mr ThunderMakeR 0 Posted January 7, 2002 I searched for awhile on both FAS and the Navy's website and couldnt find anything about sea knights landing in water. Could u post some direct links please??
Mr ThunderMakeR 0 Posted January 8, 2002 I found a lil bit of info on this site: Naval Historical Center </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">It retained the general configuration of its predecessors, including the aft sponsons carrying the fixed main gear, a fixed nose gear and built-in emergency flotation provisions so it could land and take off from the water in light seas.<span id='postcolor'> And: </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">The early A models now serve as search and rescue HH-46As. CH-46s equip Marine Reserve squadrons, and conversion of earlier aircraft to the new CH-46E version was completed with fiberglass blades slated added to its other improvements. The current H-46 Sea Knight Block Upgrade provides for installation of increased fuel capacity stub wings and an emergency helicopter flotation system. The H-46 Dynamic Component Upgrade provides for safety, engineering and electronic improvements.<span id='postcolor'> So I guess Sea Knights only land in water in emegerceny situations... Mr ThunderMakeR 0 Posted January 8, 2002 Just found another picture of the emergency floation system, this time on a Sea Knight:
barret 0 Posted January 8, 2002 they also use this for sar (search and rescue) and stuff like retriveing lost cargo (if they accidently drop it)
r71 0 Posted January 8, 2002 Any chopper works with this bug. I think I know about every bug in the game I had the euro version and befor that I had the demo. Just land straight down in water shut engine off and any chopper will sink. Then turn it back on to lift off out of the water with no dammage. I dont want to say the other things I know about the new 1.40, but the chopper water thing has been in all versions. ( for people that have Euro version still and want to have fun try this) take out the new patches and try to land a plane from a dead stop in the air. I used to love that bug the planes could land like choppers. Also land near a beach and go into the water you can take off from under water. there are other old bugs that where fun to do but I gave my Euro version to a friend. I wish they would let you take off in the grass again Hey and now that I rember, what happen to the dammage meter!!!! When you where down to red and it would blink you only had a few secs. to shut you plane or chopper off befor it would blow up
Mr ThunderMakeR 0 Posted January 8, 2002 Anyone know if any other choppers can actually do this in real life besides the chinook and sea knight??
