Mister Frag 0 Posted July 8, 2004 Has anyone repackaged the Pavehawks in a ZIP yet? I was hoping to find a mirror that doesn't use RAR. what is the problem with a rar? I own ZIP, but not RAR. Also, Windows XP will open ZIP files without installing any third-party tools. No such luck with RAR files... The other option with distributing compressed files would be to make a self-extracting archive. That way it doesn't matter what compression program is used, and everybody would be happy. Skulleye 0 Posted July 8, 2004 Lots of archives you find is .rar archives, so I would suggest to install WinRAR. It's done in a minute, and will make it much easier to extract archives without having to wait for a .zip file http://www.rarsoft.com/rar/wrar330.exe
CounterForce 0 Posted July 8, 2004 I won't be happy with a exe file a exe file may contain other "programs" with functions I do not like (everybody should know what I mean) Furthermore exe files are bigger downloads than simple rar files and some exe installers are not very easy to use (with rar or zip I only have to make two mouseclicks - exe I need two to start the program and some more to install what I want) Last but not least some installers do things I don't want them to do (e.g. creating folders, installing in wrong folders) taking all this reasons into account I think it is better to use rars or zips. btw: please check your private messages ;)

Mister Frag 0 Posted July 8, 2004 Counterforce was kind enough to send me a link for a ZIP file with the Pavehawks, so I'm making a mirror with the ZIP version available on my server: http://www.misterfrag.com/OFP/bas_pavehawks_v1_10.zip Regarding the idea of an executable carrying some other payload, self-extracting ZIP files for instance can still be opened up with WinZIP, so you get full control over the extraction process. I'm sure a similar feature exists in WinRAR. (Edit: Corrected Counterforce's name -- sorry!)
