Quick USB help

Recommended Posts

Ok, I have a new digi-cam and when I tried downloading the pics and movies, I found out that my PC won't recognise it as a removeable media :/

I eventually tracked the problem down:

http://www.universityhelp.co.uk/EX-RON.JPG

For some reasons, it doesn't want to install the drivers. I tried automatic search, I even added the VIA vers. 5 drivers manually, but it still won't work :/

Any ideas as to what I could do? rock.gif

Does your XP anyhow respond when you plug it in ?

Any message ?

Nope, nothing at all.

The camera turns on though, so it must be working to an extent :/

I tried it in all 6 ports that I have...nothing sad_o.gif

what camera do you have? if it's SD you can get a card reader for 20 bucks and open cards up to 256mb (in my experience it wont open 512mb cards)

if it's a webcam they are a pain in the ass.

Is it a new comp, or new mboard?

If so check connection cables. they're are so small that could be easily misplaced.

What else?

Try updating your mbord soft.

blackdog, it doesn't matter what device it is (camera or card reader) if the USB is buggered!

I'll have a look at the cables tomorrow, can't think of anything else, I have the latest release VIA 4-in-1s crazy_o.gif

try updating your motherboard drivers and bios - my usb ports wouldn't deliver USB 2.0 until I got the latest mobo drivers (funnily it had worked before with an older version just fine).

Maybe try uninstalling the hardware(from device manager), then letting it autodetect it or use the Add Hardware Wizard.

Would recommend tracking down any registry and left over files too if you can.

Looking closer at your device manager, it appears your actual USB drivers (not the camera's but the ones on your motherboard for your slots) are not installed. I have had this problem before. Try re-installing or installing the ones that came with your motherboard over again...

I have a similar problem with a Nikon CoolPix 3500, connecting to our XP Pro system at home.

Nikon has <a href="http://support.nikontech.com/cgi-bin/nikonusa.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_sid=6nPAmLfh&p_lva=&p_faqid=4669&p_created=1055440668&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9NzgmcF9wcm9kX2x2bDE9MSZwX3Byb2RfbHZsMj00MCZwX2NhdF

You are not alone.

*scratches head*

Right, I tried installing the win2k USB2.0 drivers, I also tried removing all entries and re-detected them again - nothing.

The camera also doesn't react like the cable is duff or the USB not present.

I am getting annoyed crazy_o.gif

Well, I managed to find some pre-SP1 USB 2.0 drivers for my VIA chipset. Installed fine, the problem of missing drivers for the host controller is gone too.

Is the camera benig detected?

OF COURSE NOT crazy_o.gifmad_o.gifcrazy_o.gifmad_o.gif

Did you notice that in the tech article I pointed out to you, there's a link to MS Knowledgebase article(s) on the subject.

Here's a silly thought: have you tried plugging the camera into another PC to eliminate that as a possibility? It's great that the USB host controller problem is solved, but should the camera be bad, you're gonna tear your hair out...

Also, is the camera compatible with both USB 1.1 and 2.0? Does your host controller support both? Some USB 2.0 devices such as scanners, cameras, or external mass storage devices only support Highspeed (480Mbps) connections and not Fullspeed (12Mbps) fallback. If you have a USB 1.1 host controller, those devices will not work or be recognized.

Ill take the cam into work today and see if it works.

If it does....hmmmm....at the moment I am thinknig of creating a new partition and installing another OS on it crazy_o.gif

I have eliminated this being a driver problem - I installed another OS, and I am VERY sure the driver MUST work - yet the camera is still not being picked up:angry:

I tried connecting it with power off, I tried connecting it with power on - yet its still not a removeable media. What else could I do sad_o.gif
