Crash Landing

Hey All,

Just wondering if there are any crash landing scripts out there? As we all know, even if you are a few(ish) feet off the ground and you crash you explode, and everyone in and around the plane/helicopter dies. Thing is this simply isn't true, loads of people have survive crashes and if this was incorperated into flashpoint it could make some interesting sp/mp missions. Like... Your UH1H is hit by a rpg and you crash in a jungle like the vietcong demo. Anyway just a thought.

I do understand the point you are getting to, and it's pretty funny you should ask about it now. Quite a while back, pre-Resistance days, I found out that you can actually crashland several types of helos into forests without dying.

There are a few things to mention on this, but I'm sure that some of you have already known about it for a long time. I tested it for nearly a week straight, trying all kinds of aspects of it, and came out with a good idea how it works. It will not work on the smaller helos, only the larger ones. Also, it must be in an actual forest, the ones marked on the maps by the large green solid areas. This was only tested so far on the 3 original islands from 1.46, Malden, Kolgujev, and Everon.

The helos that I have found it to work with are the Mi-24, Mi-17, and CH-47. The reason it works is because these helos are larger and get "snagged" in the treetops before hitting the ground. They will be damaged, but will not explode. When I tested it using several different computers, it worked about 95% of the time. I tried it from various heights and speeds too, coming in at different angles and anything I could think of.

I figured it out because on one mission I was playing a Shilka shot up my CH-47 full of troops, and the rotors stopped. I was skimming the treetops to avoid detection, but the Shilka just happened to be waiting near the forest edge and opened up on me half-way across the forest. I survived still able to walk, and 9 of 11 troops in cargo survived as well. Was funny, and got me into testing it out more.

Here are pics, try it yourself and see what results you come up with. Maybe this might help in figuring out a way to do something like it with smaller helos and in the shorter jungle areas.

Well, ben able to bring down my AH64 a number of times baddly damaged, the SEBNAM choppers are rather good for that taking a great amount of damage. As well as BAS which actually simulate equipment failrs as well as DKMs helos. Commly the BAS Blackhawks will have tail rotor failures or you loose rudders and cannot stear your chopper and can only climb and decend usually into enemy units. Managed to crash some of VIts migs in parts of Tonal and with the jet buried into the ground open the canopy and climb out a few times.

fixed winge dits rather hard to do realy depends on the maps and speed when you go down. A tail rotor failur script was out as well I found intersting it should get enhanced so you can have BHD type indedents that simulated tail rotor failure then random kills on the occupents of the aircraft.

I got a mission idea. the briefing plan reads: "Alright everyone this is your leader speaking. We just crashed en route to a hostage rescue in Davle. We're in the forest somewhere near *here* (points on a position in the forest, not accurate). Everyone exit to about ten yards really quick because i think this thing is about to explode."

In the briefing leader can assign weapons. When the mission starts a game logic being put on a waypoint that when it reaches sets off the helicopter explosion will mean that you have exactly ten seconds to clear the crash site before the chopper blows. The chopper blows and then you continue on your mission.

I have been thinking of a script techinique that would allow someone to simulate a fixed-wing crash landing, but I know many people that would like such a script would probably wish to have several different "sequences" available and one is randomly chosen for each crash. Since I don't know too much scripting myself, maybe I can write up a quick "storyboard" and have an actual script writer get it working.

And as for the helos, I have seen several of the methods that Bobcat666 mentioned. The tail rotor failures and such are nice, and one of my favorite helos besides the BAS ones are the DKM Commanches. Man, the stuff those two groups have put into their helos!  tounge_o.gif (Not the only ones, but two of the ones I use most)

I think what you should do shockhorror is actually post a little more detail about what exactly you are looking for. If there is more of a specific effect or visual sequence you are thinking about, maybe give us a little sample. For example, if you are wanting the Huey to take a hit to the tail rotor, spin out of control, and hit the dirt like in "We Were Soldiers"? Having some kind of visual image will help the scripters get more of an idea of what you need, and maybe someone can volunteer to write one and release it for the public.

most of the ppl playing OFP for a while whould already knows that it is quite simple to make a crash landing with all types of chopper in case of the engine shut down, just press decend when ever the engine shut down then enable auto hover b4 you land, it is really like doing an auto-rotate landing IRL(not as complex of couse), not that easy though as you need to act real quick with a good AGL and have a good sixth sence(it is hard to notice the engine being shut down or not in the heard of battle)

also, when you do it in MP you wont hope there is a delay

edit: AI will bail out when engine being shut down, but they only do it when it is too late

Well i know this may not help specifically but there is a script that MrZig made, a tail rotor one to be precise, but it's only really works when you start hovering and only on flat ground, that's if you want the helicopter to not blow up  wink_o.gif

If you want it just say and i'll try find it for you....or you could even search for it  tounge_o.gif

Ok i'll be more specific, i want to make a mission were you are a passenger on a dc-3, you are flying through a storm and the plane is hit by lightning, (simulated by a hit from an aa gun or something.) you black out and hear your heart beat. meanwhile your plane crashes on a desert island, (although i would prefere the sea so you wake up in a life raft.) and you wake up with the rest of the survivers on a beach like castaway or something. if the plane had an action like "prepare for emergancy landing" most of this is possible but i dont know how to get the passengers to survive?

ninja's idea works ok with helos but its not 100% so its no good for a mission and i can't get it to work with fixed wing.

talking about Script, could anyone make a script that warns you by text and sound when there is an engine failure?

i know that the DKM's chopper has one but thats not good enought(the one simlar to ATL warning ECP using would be nice)

What we need is an "aircraft realism" pack with turbulance, warnings, engine fires, crash survivers the works

Yeah,can any of you do a emergency landing script for planes like the DC3,bereiv32k,Airbus A318 and the 747?(Also can be done on water)

I would name all the passengers, then have the blackout occur while the plane is going down.... that way you can setPos the passengers out of the plane while it crashes.

I did something similar with a helo crash cut scene I made once for an intro. Had the helo flying along, and camcreated a couple of shells behind it and to the left, once the explosion happened I ran the tail rotor failure script and watched the helo spin towards some trees.

Then I faded to black while the helo was still falling and setPos'd the passengers away, let the helo crash, deleted the crashed helo and replaced it with a crashed helo addon (always looks much better). Then setpos'd the passengers back around the helo and killed some tounge_o.gif

Fade back in.... and BLAMMO !!!! One Helo crash that you narrowly survived. wink_o.gif

anyone know how to make that happen script wise (or step by step)?? (DEIMOS's plan) im not an advanced editor =(
