Anti- English

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else English living in the Celtic countries (for the uninitiated, Wales, Scotland and Ireland) noticed an intense hatrid of the English and racism that would never be tolerated were it against any other group?

For instance, in South Wales, where no-one speaks Welsh, lots of jobs stipulate that you must be able to speak Welsh. This seems a way of keeping the English out of jobs.

The Welsh language lobby there are sadly pretty damn rampant and have a lot of power within governmental institutions and the likes of the WDA. This movement and the Nationalists like Plaid Cymru are just a bunch of racist bigoted idiots, and it is appalling.

It is also one-wat enforced.

We English dont like the Welsh anyway, most English people wouldn't bother trying to get a job there in the first place. But if we said anything like that about the Welsh or something they'd complain and call us racist b*******. Go figure!

Yes. If we Americans get to complain about our problems, then other people should be able to complain about their problems tounge_o.gif .

If people can discuss this in a civil way, I don't see anything wrong with it.

If it gets ugly, the thread will get closed and punishments handed out.

Hah, replace Welsh with Swedish and Urdu with Somali and Arabic and you could have a typical Finnish equivalent discussion. tounge_o.gif

As a non-English/Welsh, not living in the Celtic countries I really cannot say that I've noticed anything of the sort.

You mean like to get a job in London, you have to speak English and not Swahili?

Well... where i live, Belgium that is, we speak 3 languages.

Flemish (or Dutch, whatever you smartasses call it, I speak it and i call it Flemish) French and a tiny bit of German...

We, the Flemish people, learn Dutch, French, German and English in school.

The people from south Belgium (the french speaking part)  barely speak anything else than French... (with exception of english)

Some of them try to speak some Dutch but there aren't a lot of them...

I have huge respect for the people that try, most of them just come over to you and talk French no matter what.

Lots don't bother learning, while we, the flemish, are forced to learn it. Not that i mind, i kinda like French... well... as far as it's possible to like learning stuff in school...

But that's not the point, the point is that we as Flemish people have to be able to speak French and English well to get a job... not always, but speaking other languages well is VERY important.

It would be harder for me to find a job if i couldn't speak French than it would be for a Wallonia (or whatever it's called in english biggrin_o.gif) if he/she couldn't speak Dutch.

Yes it pisses me off that we need to do all the effort and other people can just get away with not doing anything at all...

Is it racism?  I don't know... If you ask me it's logical that you need to learn the languages spoken in your country.  If you live in Flanders, learn Flemish, if you live in France, learn French.  If you live in Britain, learn British.

I go on a camp each year (lots of fun, boy do i have nice stories about that, but that doesn't matter now).  We go to the Ardennes for that, lots of nature and stuff like that.  When i go there, i speak French to all the French speaking people, no matter how hard it is for me, i try as hard as i can and everyone appreciates it.

So basically, i think you should adapt to where you are.  Learn the languages from your region...

I don't see it as racism, i just see it as a total lack of respect...
