Quote[/b] ]In the English part of the board please write in English and in the Czech write in Czech. Try avoiding writing in any other language since the majority of the members most likely won't understand.

Please avoid using short forms of words e.g. "m8" instead of mate, "u r" instead of you are or your, it may seem attractive to type in such a "shorthand" manner but remember that there are many people on the forums who do not have English as a first language, so it is disrespectful to use bad English simply for the sake of laziness. (Obviously there are common shortenings of words that have been used for many years on the internet that continue to be acceptable, e.g. LMAO, LOL, FYI etc.)

Writing in English includes proper punctuation. It's not that hard. wink_o.gifsmile_o.gif

no, just it is more comprehendible if put in short sentences.

Typically these units will wear boonie hats. BAS did their homework. It's the same as Force Recon's use of the boonie. Matches the recon mission profile, as a functional piece of equipment. They aren't competing in a fashion show. wink_o.gif

Well we wear patrol caps with special rolls commonly called ranger rolls. With reflective cats eyes, and your name tag stiched to the back so you know who you were following. The PL, and SL had often diamonds catseyes on the back of their patrol caps, usually depending on unit SOP. I stil have whats left of mine, we usually wear em till they rot off our heads. And never wash them end up swiming enough or standing in monsoon grade rain enough to get it rinsed out. =)

The more commonly seen black beret, now replaced with the Tan one as some goober makes everyone in the Army now wear black berets. In the field it was commonly depending on your mission to what head gear you wore. Runing very light you commly wore summer weight BDUs, back when I was in, Alice gear, and patrol cap. If you knew you were going to make heavy enemy contact you bulk up with body armor and your fritz. One of the big oversights durring the BHD mission.

Made 80s Rangers and SF out of the Hyk men, just haven't released cause not gotten a responce from him on permission.

Maybe a little off the original topic, but I hate the black berets for all. Berets used to be "Earned", not just handed out. And I preferred wearing my cover, was more comfortable and had better use for blocking sunlight. I'm planning on going back on Active Duty again, and that's one of the key things I am NOT looking forward to.

I think it mostly depends on 1) what era you are working on, 2) what ranger unit you are making the units after, and 3) what will their uniforms be set as (jungle, temperate, etc)?

I'll do some searching if I can and post here what I find out, just let us know more of what you are looking for.

Hope you didn't misunderstand my post, but I personally never had the chance to go Ranger before I got out. I was Infantry (NG EIB) in early '96 and got screwed switching to Field Artillery in Xmas of '97/98 when I decided to go Active Duty. Got out late '99 from injury, which was not enough to send me home in my opinion crazy_o.gif

I served with a lot of Ranger/SF guys, still keep in touch with several even now. I also became very familiar with most of their uniforms and equipment, all Infantry weapons mostly. If you need info regarding uniforms, weapons, vehicles, etc. I will help out anyone who asks.

As for myself, I'm looking to go back on Active soon, but want to get more in shape before I request Ranger.  wink_o.gif But my point about the beret still stands, I think they suck ass for all to get one. Just isn't right.

I just figure it's a stupid hat. I don't care who gets one. Just because you're wearing a beret doesn't make you any better than a clump of dirt on the ground. I never saw any sense in people, especially Rangers, getting all upset about clothing. The Army isn't a fashion show and they shouldn't need a beret to feel good about themselves. ::shrug::

In my opinion, the beret wasn't just a "piece of clothing", it was like any other badge or tab. Earned, not just given. They were an award for completion of your training, your hard work and dedication to do something that only so few had what it took.

When we walked past a "Black Hat" or "Green Beret" I would just see them a little different than most other soldiers, kind of like how most people might see a movie star or famous singer...they are someone I admire and respected, and some day wished to have a beret of my own. Not just Rangers, but Airborne, Special Forces, and to some extent, even the "Brown Round" Drill Sergeants.

I know that not all people in the US military have/had the same opinion, and some from other countries don't fully understand it. But where I have been, most of those badges and berets, ribbons and tabs, they meant you achieved something special. And that did make someone feel good about themself, good that they achieved something that so many others failed.

I don't think they were better than anyone else, but I'm sure most have looked at a celebrity differently than your local grocery clerk right? That mean that actor or singer is any better? Hell no! And it was more about what the beret stood for than what it looked like. Just now EVERYONE get's one, kind of takes away from the original meaning now.

No offense at all Hellfish, I respect you and your opinion. Just thought other non-military or non-USA could use some light on the matter about what the beret really stood for to many soldiers.  unclesam.gif

And also, sorry for going a bit off from the intent of this topic. Please, I don't want a blanket party tonight  rock.gif

now im not into army but as far as berets go i think the honor of wearing a beret after completing ranger school is the equivalent of getting your eagle, globe and, anchor (EGA) and your dress blues after finishing boot camp . Its just a sign of self achievment correct me if im wrong.

It's a bit more than that, after going through 3 phases of long strenuous training that pushes you to your limit, you get the tab and beret which differentiates you from the mass. Its a symbol of honor most people never don in their lifetime.

With the EGA and blues, every marine gets that after boot

I guess what im trying to say is that taking the black away from the rangers is like taking the green berets off the SF, it just isnt right crazy_o.gif

It's like taking a big shiny Marine Air Wing pin off of a flight suit before flying into combat. Not essential in combat.

Crap, looks like I started a bad movement going sad_o.gif Sorry, but when I first mentioned the Beret's deal, it was a little off-topic. I was just mentioning how I'm in process of getting back in, and didn't look forward to wearing the darn thing because I'm "pre-stress card" Army where the berets were not standard issue. I think I should not have mentioned that being as it was off topic, and I do apologize.

As for the original purpose of this thread, the most common headgear in the field for a US Army Ranger would likely depend on what era and maybe even what specific unit. If you are still wanting to decide between Boonie, BDU Cap, etc. then post here a little more info and the fine members of this community will help you out. As already seen, there are a few current and prior-service soldiers already posting here, and more might come. We would love to help you out.
