John C Flett 0 Posted June 3, 2004 The editor and unofficial tools are hugely important to the lifespan of the game. Plus the fact that even some quite complex stuff is pretty small meaning even as a 56k user I can still get the addons easily. I can download a whole campaign in less time than one map for UT. But at the same time so many individual missions are replayable. The scale and depth combined with the number of tools the player has, the range of strategic options and pretty decent ( though not state of the art AI ) mean that even a simple mission can have many permutations. Plus of course the freedom to use all of the above as you wish. Realisim? Mayby? But I see no reason why a fantasy game couldn't boast much of the above. And a great community of course. Also, more subtle, but the balance of challenge and reward is right. The game is dead easy to get into but there are so many skills that you can keep bein tested even after all this time. walker 0 Posted June 3, 2004 Hi all Like the rest here I love the vast scope of OFP. * The size of islands dwarf any other game. * The number of roles you play from soldier to vehicle driver/gunner/commander/pilot/helmsman once again it dwarfs any other game * Command anything from a section to a squad to heck, blowing our own trumpet I know, a battalion. * A robust realistic physics engine * Above all it is the modability that makes OFP superior to any other game. * From the mission editor to O2, Visitor, and WRP * scripting that alows you to do anything. * look at the quality of effects from the Moders * look at stunning number of weapons * consider every vehicle addon from space shuttle down to BMX bycicle * you can even be a dog Add to it all the most cohesive and inteligent community in any game and it is obvious why we have all been loyal to this game. No Game has had me come back to play it so long Kind Regards Walker
sanctuary 19 Posted June 3, 2004 For me the secret or the re-playability factor of OFP lies in the very simple (with a few clicks, you can make an enjoyable mission) but very powerfull editor (once you tried some advanced things and read some tutorials, you can make complex missions). I doubt i will be bored with this game when i have such an editor. The freedom of choice you have on how to accomplish your goals is very good too, as you can replay a same mission while trying new tactics and a different global strategy. OFP re-playability has really nothing to fear for me

Im probably one of the few people that's quite happy to wait another year for OFP2. just look at all the amazing mods that get released on an almost daily basis. I Dont think there is another community out there that is so productive as this one.
Baphomet 0 Posted June 4, 2004 Ofp is probably the longest any single game has captured and maintained my interest. It's still my favorite game. I really don't play many PC games anymore except OFP. One thing OFP really needs to increase replay value is the mission system seen in the march 14 release of Soldner. (Don't whine to me about NDA's or piracy, someone just happened to drop this prerelease in my lap. I simply sated my curiousity). You have a base of sorts where you can screw around and run the obstacle course or what have you. Or you can operate this computer which you basically are given mission contracts. There's no prevailing story in this release of the game that I played. It's really a nice idea however. You just jump in and you're given a list of missions and you accept a mission and you start the mission area. The thing I like about this idea is you have a set inventory for all of the missions. Which when you accept a mission, you can requisition them and they'll either 1# change your inventory on your person or a squadmate if you're the leader. 2# they'll appear in their respective area within your base that you start in. (remind you of Sinews of war? It sure does to me). I think OFP -really- needs something in which say you have a base on a place on one of the islands in which you can select a bunch of pre-set missions that are generated on the fly. This way the gameplay between them can be continuous and it doesn't need to be a part of some campaign that you must devote considerable amounts of time to. As nice as the campaign modes were for CWC and Resistance. I really could care less about a story. Sometimes I just want to leap into a mission and execute tactical maneuvers... or just blow shit up... and have my progress from one mission (weapons, troops, various military assets, etc.) gained or lost. Only Soldner, has just as many if not more weird bugs than OFP, abyssmal AI and well... it uses the expanding ring ballistics system, and it plays like Counterstrike... so yeah. That says it all. bonko the sane 2 Posted June 4, 2004 the only thing that i miss is JIP, as it reduced this community in size drasticly (especially after cti made its debut) , but the quality of this community increased. Anyway, who said size mattered
Major Fubar 0 Posted June 4, 2004 Speaking for myself, I think OFP has the highest replayability factor of any game out there. Between user made missions, campaigns, mods and addons, the possibilities are virtually infinite. My LAN group used to play UT, HL, Rainbow 6 series and Delta Force series prior to the release of OFP - since OFP, we have played it almost exclusively. We have dabbled with Ghost Recon, Raven Shield, BHD and others, but when we discuss what games we want to play at the start of a session, OFP usually wins hands down. BraTTy 0 Posted June 4, 2004 Good points guys ,all this MP talk tho I forgot to mention how important the single player game was in OFP,I hope they keep OFP2 like that too. I originally bought OFP to drive around in vehicles and shoot things, but yes the excellent mission editor kept me playing the most because I never intended to play it online much. With JIP progress coming,I think I would play online alot more (depending on the mission style) ,just I hope they don't forget how important the single player game is to me. sander 14 Posted June 4, 2004 Hi, Operation Flashpoint almost makes the impression of having been specially developed with me and my wishes for a game in mind. OFP and later on Resistance have occupied my cdrom drive for most of the past years. Its main qualities that make it stand out above other games are in my opinion: - the freedom and versatility of the gameplay - the size and diversity of the islands- the accessible and powerful editor It has matched and exceeded all of the things I ever wanted to see in a game. Regards, Sander
