WASHINGTON (AFP) - NASA has developed a computer program that comes close to reading thoughts not yet spoken, by analyzing nerve commands to the throat.

It says the breakthrough holds promise for astronauts and the handicapped.

"A person using the subvocal system thinks of phrases and talks to himself so quietly it cannot be heard, but the tongue and vocal cords do receive speech signals from the brain," said developer Chuck Jorgensen, of NASA's Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, California.

Jorgensen's team found that sensors under the chin and one each side of the Adam's apple pick up the brain's commands to the speech organs, allowing the subauditory, or "silent speech" to be captured.

The team concluded that the method could be useful on space missions or other difficult working conditions, such as air traffic control towers and even to make current voice-recognition software more active.

Coming soon: copying of brain contents onto DVD's tounge_o.gif

It's a quite interesting area of resarch. It's not really entirely new however. Pattern matching brain wave patterns has been around for years.

The big problem is that they are all individual so you have to re-train the system for each person.

Still, it's cool smile_o.gif

Might be sad but the first thing that came to mind was the piloting system of the YF-22 in Macross Plus:

Kind of impractical, what happens if a pilot is muttering something to himself and the plane interprets his words to be a command?

Good side:

Very critical part for future cybernetic augmentation. Direct neural taps, although a bit more permanent and invasive, would be more precise though.

Bad side:

Er, as microphones and speakers are alike, I'd hate to be wearing one of these in an EMP burst. Static cling of your gibs to everything in sight would be the least of your worries.

That mecha dream of mine is getting closer and closer... smile_o.gifsmile_o.gifsmile_o.gif

Dubya' on DVD?

I think a 5 1/4 floppy would suffice.

Now, the entire white house staff might make a dent.

If they ever refine the technology and develop a huge database of translated neural signals, perhaps the CIA would take interest in this.

Which is kind of a scary thought to be honest.

I'm assuming the logistical problem of making translation universal to every unique person would be quite significant. So perhaps it's not that feasible.

Yes. It'd help the handicapped which is a good thing. However I could so totally see something like that if it were pratical, get abused. Say goodbye to our legal system.

Yeah. Not so feasible insofar as the meditative discipline you'd have to possess to stay totally focused and not say/think to say something irrelevant or dangerous.

I could so totally see a bunch of riggers/drillers engaging in a lot of "industry talk" while operating equipment that was thought controlled and the translation computer clicking and grinding away going "Does not compute! Does not compute!"
