KGBMan 0 Posted February 4, 2004 So, what is the best workable hardware/software combination for OPF ? No green stuff, no CTD, no any problems ..... MB - CPU- Memory- Video - Hard Drive - Sound - Windows ?
toadlife 3 Posted February 4, 2004 This topic probably belongs in General, but here goes: Motherboard: Asus SK8V Deluxe CPU: Athlon64-FX51 Memory: 1-2GB Kingston Registered DDR PC3200 Video: Gainward Geforce4 ti4800 (128MB-AGP8x) Hard Drive: Dual Seagate Serial ATA150 120GB (Raid 0 or 1) Sound: Anything OTHER than a SB Live! Given the outragous memory bandwidth of AthlonFX systems and the stability of The Geforce4 card inr egard to OFP, I think a system with these specs would blow anything else available out the water. I chose the 'old' Geforce4 because of the various problems with OFP and new vid cards, amd ofp's preformance relies mostly on memory bandwidth anyway. llauma 0 Posted February 5, 2004 And I would also use older detonator drivers cause they are optimized for dx8 games and the new ones are made for dx9 games. So choose the detonator 44.03 or similar.. If you dont believe me run two different tests in 3DMark 2001 and you'll see that the old ones are much better for dx8. I'm no expert but this is just a thing I noticed when testing.
iNeo 0 Posted February 6, 2004 Would 256MB ATI Radeon 9800XT be good for OFP
mr burns 132 Posted February 6, 2004 it run´s ofp fast as shit, but i have to repeat: "textures will have that flickering due to the lack of presence of a w/buffer " sad but true. also reverting to a lower catalyst version doesn´t help.

Flickering, you mean the roadtextures on grass etc? scheisse
mr burns 132 Posted February 6, 2004 scheisse indeed .. lol lee has the same problem with his new GF5900 XT (or sumfin like that ) and he made a video that shows the flix on a BW-mod vehicle: Quote[/b] ]When looking through a binocular or sniper or with the cameratool (zoom) some textures are flashing.Like this: ~250kb DivX Video - Click. MfG Lee i have the same effect on trees, soldiers, houses etc...
iNeo 0 Posted February 6, 2004 i have the same effect on trees, soldiers, houses etc... Damn that sucks But I will have to live with that when I get my new pc I guess... thanks for info
nubbin 0 Posted February 6, 2004 I have a 9700 pro that doesn't do any of that. and hasn't with any of the last 5 sets of drivers. I guess I have been lucky because I have yet to have a problem in any game (for about 8 or 9 months since I've had the card. But I know people do have problems, so I don't deny they exist. Could it be just a factor of having a clean system? I dont' know, but everything hums along for me. The point is, don't assume you will have the problems just because many others are. People usually don't post about problems when they don't have them.
iNeo 0 Posted February 6, 2004 Could be there's a tiny little piece of hope
SpeedyDonkey 0 Posted February 6, 2004 Yeah, im also getting one with Radeon. Don't know witch one yet. But it looks like all newer models have the same problem. OT: Radeon 9800 is the newest one atm. But does anyone kno when the nex generation of cards is coming? This summer?
iNeo 0 Posted February 6, 2004 Yeah, im also getting one with Radeon. How come? You leasing a whole package?
SpeedyDonkey 0 Posted February 6, 2004 Do you mean the "Home PC" thing?
lee_h._oswald 0 Posted February 6, 2004 I have a 9700 pro that doesn't do any of that.Could it be just a factor of having a clean system? 9700 Pro is no "modern" card anymore. Having a clean system has nothing to do with that damned flickering textures. It´s caused of using z-buffer (faster in newer games) and not the good old w-buffer. I hate those bug, I would be glad if BIS can say something to it. Whats the sense of having a modern graphics card, so you can choose higher viewdistance and get those *#%§$# flickering textures. Tamme 0 Posted February 6, 2004 I've always wondered why everyone has had problems with their SB Live! in OFP. It has worked like a dream for me. EDIT: Oh, BTW Mr Burns. I like your sig.
mr burns 132 Posted February 6, 2004 i´m seriously thinking about buying a really fast ATI 9700 and keeping my 9600 for real DX9 games ... or even better, i need an OFP only PC @Tamme: thx, feel free to use it for yourself
iNeo 0 Posted February 6, 2004 Do you mean the "Home PC" thing? Â Yeah. My dad's gonna lease from Pfizer, which is where he's working. I guess you're doing something similar?
SpeedyDonkey 0 Posted February 6, 2004 Do you mean the "Home PC" thing? Â Yeah. My dad's gonna lease from Pfizer, which is where he's working. I guess you're doing something similar? Yeah. It'll probably be a P4 3Ghz 800fsb, 1024 DDR Pc3200, Audigy2, 17" TFT. I haven't decided the graphic card yet.

And how much are they taking off his salary? 1024 DDR, Audigy 2, 17" TFT here too, but P4 3.2 GHz. GFX will be ATi Radeon 9800XT since they don't let you change the package except upgrading to a larger monitor, adding printer, speaker system etc. It's a renting though, they take it back after 3 years. Same for you? But it's cheaper than buying it and I guess you won't want to keep the crap after three years anyway.

After three years i can either buy it for a nominal price of like 10$, returne it, or change it to a brand new one. Btw, i think the graphics card is a 9600 256mb (which really isn't that good) So i might change it when the new generation of GPU's are released. But it'll definetly be enough for now

iNeo 0 Posted February 6, 2004 complementary stuff afterwards? Correct  Roger, we got pretty much the same offer then. It's a Dell Dimension 8300 btw. Which company that's offering this does your mom/dad work for?

toadlife 3 Posted February 6, 2004 Speaking of new systems, at work our laptops are getting really old, so they're going to buy us new ones. Since it has to last for 4-5 years, they let us choose any laptop we wanted (within reason). Here is what we chose: Area-51m Enthusiast <ul> [*]Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor with HT Technology 3.0GHz 800MHz FSB [*]SiS648FX + SiS963L AGP8X Chipset [*]AREA-51M ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 PRO Module with 128MB DDR [*]1024MB DDR PC-3200 [*]Sound-Blaster Pro Compatible 3D Audio [*]Hitachi 60GB 7200 RPM ATA100 with 8MB Cache When I'm not using it for work, this sucker should run OFP just fine.
