ran 0 Posted February 3, 2004 Old British Army adverts were great were you had to make a decision and later on in the commercial break it would tell you what you had to do. i saw only one of those, the one with the truck on the mined road, in the following commercial, they shown 1 possibility which was to use the poles or whatever on the side of the road, but by climbing on the poles pile, the soldiers made one fall on the road and triggered a mine or two, the second and good solution was playing minesweeper with your bayonet nice ones, didn't it boost up the enlistment rate in UK ? Tex -USMC- 0 Posted February 3, 2004 Being a bit of a Francophile myself, I swear that the next time that uses this topic for French jokes I will lock this sucker up. Maybe even throw in a PR for going off topic. I'm not going to even ask what activities your Francophilia may encompass
denoir 0 Posted February 4, 2004 Can I ask, is there any1 still finding these jokes funny? The problem is that since the couple of last years' international disagreement the jokes have become mean-spirited. A lot of people not familiar with the well-intended humorous European tradition of mocking ones neighbours have picked up the jokes, but not the spirit they were made in. You see, it's a great old tradition in European countries to make fun of your neighbours idiosyncracies. But they are made in a brotherly spirit and not out of resentment. Everybody makes fun of everybody. For instance in Sweden we tell "Norgehistorier" - jokes about Norwegians. In Norway on the other hand they tell  "Sverigehistorier" - jokes about the Swedes. Every European nation has traditional jokes about the other European nations. France is just being unfairly singeled out these days. If you didn't know actually the Italians are traditionally the most common target of "military incapability" jokes.

hellfish6 7 Posted February 4, 2004 The problem I have with French jokes is just that - they are totally mean spirited. I'm all for making fun of everyone and everything, but I find that 99% of the people that make fun of the French do it out of some kind of absurd American sense of revenge over Iraq or some other perceived international slight where France chose to go it's own, well thought out way. One state being another's bitch is not an ally. It's a puppet. I applaud France (and indeed every other country that chose not to be a part of the "Coalition of the Willing") for taking a stand for something they believed in. It's not easy standing up to a hegemony.
KJAM 0 Posted February 4, 2004 Quote[/b] ] the people that make fun of the French do it out of some kind of absurd American sense of erm matey, im british and as you may well know british has a long long history of rivalry against the french (agincourt, waterloo etc),but this is only poking fun at them, at least it isnt really hostile, hell we make jokes about our own country for heavens sake (mainly the TA taking the brunt of the military jokes ) it states itself, it is a JOKE which means it isnt to be taken seriously, and also it wasnt a statement, just a question (rhetorical at that) one possible answer could have been "so they dont have to waste tgime turning round so they could get back to help out in other places" etc etc
Gollum1 0 Posted February 4, 2004 Yes, they are supposed to be just jokes for Europeans but it goes to the next level in the States, with Condolezza Rice talking about how France should be "punished" so it can't be attributed to old joking around and rivalry. KJAM 0 Posted February 4, 2004 lol well i guess it could when only europeans say the jokes lol, one example, its a well known fact that MOST americans dont quite see the humour in british humour (monty python, fawlty towers etc) lol

Blake 0 Posted February 6, 2004 Quote[/b] ]Americans don't have a sense of humour, oh plz. Yet most Europeans laugh at Seinfeld, Frazier, Friends etc. This is anti-americanism everywhere is getting a bit boring

Gollum1 0 Posted February 6, 2004 Me too, eeh I mean I agree with Blake. I meant that Americans DO have a sense of humor, of course, I meant "oh please" at the statement that they don't. I'm confused.
