Low fps with geforece 4 ti4400??

Recommended Posts

hi, I'm wondering why I get such a low FPS with my geforce 4 TI4400 card, my online friends in europe get a FPS of 40-70 with just a geforce 2 card... I have the latest patches for my video card and my sound card, I also notice a bit of FPS lag when ever certain sounds are played IE: MG fire, Explosions, and music... I have a soundblaster audigy 2 soundcard....Only thing that i'm thinking is cause I don't overclock thats why I get a low FPS. I'll list my system specs:

1ghz Intel pentium 3 processor

512mb RAM

Nividia geforce 4 TI4400 graphics card on 2X antianilizing and 4X anisotropic filtering, with texture sharpening enabled

soundblaster audigy 2 soundcard with EAX

OS: WINME

I play OFP with these settings:

CPU benchmark is :1807

and I run direct 3D HW T&L.... and I have direct X 9

auto drop down at none

high terrain detail

res: 1152x864 32bit textures

everything enabled except for W buffer

framerate all the way to the right

visual quality all the way to the right

and visibility at 1355

AUDIO:

hardware excel on

and EAX on

I get around 12-30 FPS on the desert island intro screen

any ideas would be greatly appreciated.... I'm thinking it's my processor that needs to be upgraded to maybe a 2GHZ pentium 4 and maybe add some more RAM to my machine?

The CPU benchmark as stated by BIS does a little loop on your CPU only. It is affected by the OS, you should see better results by switching to 2K or XP.

Audigy 2 EAX also hits on your CPU noticeably. Soundstorm does not.

Ingame settings appear optimized. Look in your OFP:Prefs app, you should limit your textures to 512x512 normally.

AA/AS also has a major hit on FPS.

#1 tho is your CPU. OFP is very cpu demanding. Your video card is likely just sitting on its butt waiting for something to do.

Say no more. Turn it down to medium or low for greatly improved performance.

To get better frame rates reduce the terrain detail to Low or Normal. Terrain detail is a huge FPS killer.

Baz, a 1 GHz processor and "high terrain detail" dont mix. In fact, nowadays, 1 GHz processors and OFP dont mix very well, period. wink_o.gif

Keep the gfx card and the Audigy but its time to retire that old steam-driven processor.

When purchasing hardware for OFP:

#1 get more CPU. Then get even more. No, there is no such thing as fast enough CPU for OFP. Deal with it.

#2 gfx card

#3 more memory. (512 MB might be enough for your use, I regularly top that out here and need more)

**EDIT: Try disabling the AA and AF. The GF4 isn't a Radeon 9800XT/ GF FX 5900, after all...

I got a P4 2.8 HT and I use normal terrain detail, I rather spend my power on a longer distance view or better LOD settings than supahr smooth/bumpy terrain tounge_o.gif

also, I 'only' run at 1024x768

yeah I don't know I like the bumpy terrian but it kills my FPS a bit, but not too much.... But whenever a sound is played my FPS dies for a sec. and then resumes... The only thing I hate about terrain detail on high is when i'm using the STT specops bike.. I keep dying from the jumps over the bumpy terrain..

**EDIT** changing terrain detail to low fixed it a bit

Audigy 2 EAX is software on your CPU. No way around this one, unless you get a MB with onboard sound like nForce2 (WITH MCP+T!) soundstorm that specificly has off-processer EAX.

This is your memory mainly, no major CPU load here. I don't know how I overlooked this, but my guess is you'd be awful close to hitting your pagefile on your harddisk, and when that happens you can kiss any hope of FPS goodbye. If you want to run this level of detail, I'd recommend at least 768mb of ram, for Win+OFP+stuff.

#1 is your cpu. MORE is not enough. Get the best, cool it, then OC it. Then kill as much windows fluff as possible and push it some more.

I'd also try knocking the AS down from 4x to Qx, and setting textures to a max of 512x512 in the ofp prefs.

I use fraps too, the 1.9 lite edition.

>BAJ: I wish this were possible. What I want is monitor spanning.
