ralphwiggum 6 Posted November 23, 2003 AFAIK, during Yom Kippur war, Egypt used 'recently' acquired weapons from USSR, such as surfae to air missles, some ATs that were controllable. In the beginning, the Egyptian army was able to knock down plenty of Israel tanks, hitting fuel tanks and weak spots.
Milkman 1 Posted November 23, 2003 Egyptians had AT-1 and AT-3 rockets that destroyed alot of M48's and Centurions during the first part of the Yom Kippur war. The arabs used: Mig-17, Mig-21, T-54/55, T-62, T-34, BM-21, BM-24, BTR-152, AK47/AKM rifles, RPD machine guns, ZSU-57-2, IS-3, SA-1 and SA-2 SAMs, and I even saw pictures of Syrian III/IV type WW2 german Panzers. Badgerboy 0 Posted November 23, 2003 Type III's? The Wehrmact had pretty much phased them out, but still has a small number of long barrelled 75mm variants. A couple of King Tigers on the other hand, would still have been able to hold their own, even decades later.
Milkman 1 Posted November 23, 2003 If I can get my scanner to work, I will show you a pic of them badger. It shows a black Syrian Type III with shortbarrel 75mm gun.
bucket man 2 Posted November 24, 2003 Thanks for the info. Did Egypt use AK74 or was their main weapon AK47? Its real dam hard to find any pictures of Egyptian, Jordanian or Syrian soldiers from Yom Kippur or Six Days war.
Stag 0 Posted November 24, 2003 The Yom Kippur war was a few years away from the Six-day war. Suitcase Saggers were a non-existent wish. The defining actions of 1967 were the Israeli air strikes which just about castrated the opposing forces. Back in them days, even the Egyptians were using PzIVH's (one previous careful owner). Don't know about the rest of the kit though.

AK74 didn't make an appearance until the mid-late 70's. That's with Soviet Forces, let alone export.
bucket man 2 Posted November 24, 2003 Found that picture of an Syrian PzIVH too. Wonder how they got their hands on those tanks. Did arab armies use basic russian helmet models or did they have one of their own or were those armies more rag tag militias that had no uniforms?
Milkman 1 Posted November 24, 2003 You might want to hit the local library and look for books on these wars. Israelies in Six day war: Oh yeah, and the arabs also used PT-76's.
