Recommended Posts

Hats off to Sigma for getting these Leopard tanks out the door, I know some of you have been waiting for them. The pack includes a Leopard C1, Leopard C2 and an Uparmoured Leopard C2. This is a beta release but there are no known bugs. They feature burn scripts, dust shock fire scripts and are crewed by our new armoured crewman was released in the new troops release but has yet to be utilised. These tanks require download of our base troops and cpack. They can be found on our vehicles page. Hope you enjoy them. Very nice work from Sigma.

You guys seem to be pumping them out! Great stuff, d/l as we speak..

I was just wondering, I have v1.1 of ONS Leopards, so how does v0.6r fit in with that? Did you just revise the version numbers?

Yeah. . . that bug comes from the alpha texture concerned being separate from the pbo the binarized model is in.

I'll fix that.

I don't know if the Canadian Leopards can do this, but I know that the German Army Leopards can be equiped with retractable snorkles for the engine air intake and exhaust, and when deployed they are capable of fording waters 12 feet deep. You might be able to use an animated folding snorkel (activated via the action menu), and a script to make a Leopard capable of traveling in shallow water without exploding or having the crewmen die.

That's one of the reasons why countires use the leo becuase of its water capabilities

The version on www.operationnorthstar.com is now updated with the fix for the drive sprocket alpha problem. . . could mirroring news sites update their files?

And yeah. . . personally, I think the Uparmoured C2 is one of the most killer looking tanks in the world. . . those MEXAS Heavy packs look cool as hell.

look here:

really gorgeous tanks Sigma. Can't wait for the RHS ones now smile_o.gif

Also cool scripts I must say. Sometimes the tank is destroyed but you're still alive. Really cool feature.

If only the Leo 2's were in this quality :/

Enjoy them now, boyos, because they're not going to be around much longer. From Strategypage.com:

Quote[/b] ]October 13, 2003: Canada is going tankless. For the first time since World War II, Canada will have not MBTs (Main Battle Tanks) in its armed forces. Canada has used lighter armored vehicles for nearly a century, and will soon replace it's current (since 1978) 114 Leopard tanks with something lighter. The Leopards may be put in storage, just in case.

With the end of the Cold War in 1991, Canada withdrew its armored brigade from Europe. Since then, it has had a difficult time sending it's tank anywhere because of their weight (42 tons each). Most Canadian military operations in the past decade have been peacekeeping. There have been times when tanks would have been useful, but the transportation problems proved insurmountable. A new, lighter, armored vehicle (like the U.S. Stryker, which is made in Canada) would probably be used, and the new vehicles are expected to cost about $600 million. Canada already uses LAVs (wheeled armored vehicles) on peacekeeping operations. It will probably be a few years before the last two Canadian tank battalions are disbanded. Many Canadians have been complaining that their armed forces have been turned into a peacekeeping force, leaving Canada dependent on the United States to actually defend the country from some foreign threat. But no one has attempted to invade Canada for nearly two centuries, and that last attempt (by the United States) failed.

Ah, the uninformed.  (not you, Hellfish, the writer of the article)

That's not actually true. . . it's mostly speculative. The decision to go 'tankless' hasn't actually been made; though there is a lot of talk at all levels. I'd be hard pressed to believe any report anyone outside the CF considers to be 'official', because nowadays everyone in the CF is writing a 'white paper', (see the notorious 'corporals' report') and nearly every one of them has been hailed as 'the official word' by the press, where none of them are.

Incidentally, it's wrong on another point as well (it's a very good article for that). Canada's tanks have often been overseas since the end of the Cold War. Most recently in Kosovo, where the LdSH served.

The bit about the Stryker is kinda cute too. . . err. . . umm. . . did anyone download the LAV-III addon?

Umm. . .

we had that vehicle in service, and operating overseas before the US even started considering buying it. . . umm. . .

True... plus often the tank transportation problem can be surmounted by simply using tank transporters of other NATO countries or shipping both the tanks and their tank transporters on military transport ships (either Canadian or US transport ships).

But nothing replaces a MBT, certainly not a Stryker. If anything it would be at least something that is resistant to RPG-7 rockets. But even such APC's can not withstand hits from heavier AT rockets and guided missiles. I also don't think the Iraqis are using the lastest generation of warheads for the RPG-7. These have been built by Russia to modernize the old RPG-7 with new tandem warhead designs and enhanced armor penetration.

At the end of the day, big heavily armored vehicles are still needed and the modern MBT certainly has the armor and firepower to take on a wide range of missions.

In a place like Iraq, wheeled APC's are just RPG bait as we will probably see once the UN starts sending in UN peacekeepers who will likely patrol with light wheeled armor. Such APC's are better for recon work and rapid reaction forces where there speed keeps them from being hit by RPG fire (usually). But in urban combat it's easy to bottle them up with well planned ambushes and then rip them apart with RPG fire.

Fortunately in Kosovo, the locals aren't doing that to KFOR.

But Iraq will be a different story.

Anyways back to this addon, these Leo tanks will make for good security for the Bison, Coyote, and LAV-III you guys released. The tanks can be the spearhead of an assault and hopefully take most of the punishment from RPG's while the infantry disembark from their APC's behind the Leos with suppressive fire coming from the auto-cannons and MG's on the APC's. Of coarse the big 120mm cannon on the Leo's is always nice for blasting the hell out of enemy armor and infantry. smile_o.gif

@Miles

Those are Leo 1's ;) No 120 mm gun. They have 105mm gun and in OFP the uparmored ones seem to be ~ as strong as a T72. So I wouldn't let them get to many hits by RPGs ;)

Strategypage.com is not a very reliable resource, I'm finding. I'm always quoting them for things they get wrong (especially about the Strykers - they're very, very biased against them to the point where they make ridiculous claims) just so I can tear them apart. It looks like their poor reporting extends to beyond the US Army's total conversion from the M-1/M-2 to the Stryker (well, they'd have you believe that).

Would Canada be better served by acquiring the XM-8 AGS or maybe the Stryker 105mm platform? Those are both light and deployable vehicles with good fire control and modular armor. They were pretty much developed for the exact same missions Canada currently finds itself assigned to.
