Judge Rabbi 0 Posted September 26, 2003 Hello. I'd like to ask if Operation Flashpoint is best played using a sound card, since my on-board is giving me a headache, with constant blue screen crashes when a lot of sound in involved in an area of gameplay (ALOT of vulcan fire usually causes this). I tried upgrading my sound chip drivers, but the damn website still has drivers from 2002. (Check here) It sounds really weird when the sound problem occurs. All the voices sound like something from Tron, and they take about 20 seconds to say 3-4 words. I'm running off patch 1.46 (i'm also one of the few unlucky ones to have the 'olive green' problem with OPF Resitance ) Thanks for reading.
mr burns 132 Posted September 26, 2003 I don´t have any clue of such hardware issues, but you could search The FAQ for an answer to your question
Placebo 29 Posted September 26, 2003 From being around the "scene" I would say that a lot of games don't like onboard sound as a rule, Opf being one of them, Opf also does not like Sound Blaster Live cards, the best cards for Opf are I believe Audigy, there are 3 threads about best soundcard for Opf that I found by searching here
theavonlady 2 Posted September 26, 2003 Hello. I'd like to ask if Operation Flashpoint is best played using a sound card The general answer to that question is yes. Sure there are exceptions, other than notebook PCs, but overall your best best is a relaible separate sound card. Then the question is which sound card. If you're thinking of using an old Sound Blaster Live, first search The FAQ for "sound blaster" for a heads-up. edit: oh, and Ktivah Vechatimah Tova, Rabbi, that is, if you understand. A friend bought a new wizz-bang PC, with on-baord sound and had huge problems. I stuck in an old Creative Vibra128 Sound card and it instantly fixed the problems. I don't think OFP likes the AC97 onboard sound very much at all
Placebo 29 Posted September 26, 2003 I'm using an old SBLiveValue 4.0 and never had a problem. In that case consider yourself extremely fortunate never to have suffered the "crackling" problem
Judge Rabbi 0 Posted September 26, 2003 edit: oh, and Ktivah Vechatimah Tova, Rabbi, that is, if you understand. Just about (something to do with having a good new year ) Before you say it, i'm NOT Jewish...many of you 'may' find that offensive, and if you do i'll happilly change my name. It's just that RABBI rhymes with my first name, and the "Judge" part came from "Judge Dredd." Anyway, thats out of the way. Thanks for the input. Will be spending some more on a sound card later on . A "Crackiling" noise is the perfect way to describe it placebo. Dunno why OPF is the only game out of my collection of 24+ PC games that needs a sound card to avoid problems. BraTTy 0 Posted September 27, 2003 I had a Sblive but been using on-board sound for quite the while.Mines c-media on a Asus MB, been using it like 2 years. I notice odd happenings if I turn on hardware acceleration tho. I play many many games, no problems here
bonko the sane 2 Posted September 27, 2003 My OFP crashes randomly due to SBLive conflicts with VIA hardware...and I also installed OFP at my girlfriends pc (which uses AC97 onboard sound) and I get no problems there whatsoever...time to get myself an Audigy it seems. Sole 0 Posted September 27, 2003 funny thing is, with my old SB Live! Player in my old comp I never had any problem. With my SB Audigy Platinum tho, I sometimes have a little crackling (not much and not often, but still) and some strange thingy that farks up fading stuff from left to right (and visa versa) when you are very near the sound source... other than that, it works like a charm
Greg 0 Posted September 28, 2003 From my experience testing with 3 different on board sound chips and 1 PCI card: SBLive - Severe stability issues under WinXP, pick a driver, pick a bug. Can blue screen in OFP (reproducable when shilka fires AA gun on some sytems). Latest Win9x driver is stable. AC97 on Jetway SiS board - Sever performance problems, game freezes or stutters every few seconds. CMedia on Asus AMD board - No issues, good performance and quality. nForce2 on Soltek and Epox boards - No issues with current drivers (old drivers had EAX/3D problems) So it is a bit of a mixed bag, certainly some on-board chips and the SBLive have serious issues that the latest drivers don't fix. Also note that some of those sound cards/chips use considerable CPU time, even >10% and this can tripple if you reduce/disable hardware acceleration in Control Panel (which you might do for stability with some boards). If you think your OFP problems are sound related, disable the sound device in Windows Device Manager, or even in your BIOS if on-board. You should witness a significant difference in OFP if there is a problem.

Judge Rabbi 0 Posted October 4, 2003 THATS IT. This problem has definently crossed the line now. Not finished OPF CWC yet, so I was playing on the mission "Air Attack." The sound problem occured and the PC crashed AGAIN. Re-booted, and went to carry on to find that the ENTIRE CAMPAIN HAS BEEN ERASED. WTF?! I have to start again? Why?! Why did this happen? All because of a pathetic sound problem?! Sorry, sorry. I'm just a bit upset now that I have to got through that game again. I was about to start the "Wake up call" mission too. Damn PC. Who the hell do I blame now? If anyone can help me, can they please direct me to a site that has a save game file of the CWC campain upto "Wake up call" please? (BTW I was running on patch 1.46.) This added with the fact my PC can't play Resistance on my PC has made me a very...angry...person.

Claymore 0 Posted October 25, 2003 I have a SoundBlaster Live 1024 and NEVER had any problems with a game with it! I now have a P4 Aopen AX4B 533 motherboard with Intel chipset but a couple of months ago I was still using my Aopen AX34Pro II motherboard with VIA chipset and also NO problem or crackling sounds in any of my games (I have a lot of games, I guess something like 300), not all installed ofcourse but most of them played with the soundBlaster Live 1024 and not a problem. I was allways using Win98SE with that soundcard. My specs are P4 2.4Ghz, Aopen AX4B 533 mobo, 512 megs of ram, Creative GeForce 3 with 64MB, Windows 98 second edition. Guest Posted October 25, 2003 Don't whether this will help...but might be worth a shot for some of you: TweakXP Obviously this is for XP users as it seems the OS is part of the problem. Crackling doesn't seems to happen on 98SE systems.
