Falklands islands?

Recommended Posts

i am looking for a map that i can recreate some battles for the Falklands on. I dont need it to be geographically correct, as the scenery is the most important thing.

I was thinking similar to Malden, without the forests + with not so many trees, buildings and roads.

Basically i want lots of open spaces in a hilly environment with nothing but some bushes and the odd building, maybe a couple of towns + roads but not too much. Malden's ground is the closest i have seen so far as Everon + Nogova is a bit too dark.

I have had a play with WRP edit and i cant use the bloody thing!

Can anyone help please?

Addons and Mods :Discussion

What about using the map that came with the Malvinas demo. You get the cold desolate feel even though it is tiny!

Hobson, the Campana de Malvinas |OFP| (Cazadores de Monte) mod team has a small falklands island, but it just has a runway, a main city, and couple of small villages or buildings.   But still it's better then nothing and it does look like the Falklands Islands.

It's called the BetaMod2 and you can download it at:

http://malvinas.cazadoresdemonte.com.ar/download.htm

This pack includes British and Argentinian troops, but the sides are switched (British are East, Argentinians are West) compared to the Falklands Mod teams stuff and the other British addons.   But if you need an island its in there.  Also their helicopters ROCK!!  It's not too hard to switch the sides back if you want.   Just group a squad to a leader from the opposite side and make the leader's "probability of presence" slider set to 0%.

Sorry too bother you....

But now:

Well the only Falklands map is the one from Campana de Malvinas and the islands from FLK only will be released with full mod. so try that one or wait till FLK.

I have had a play with the Maldives island, but it is very small.

At the moment I am looking at the North West of Nogova, there is a bit of land there that is quite good. Still open for any comments though.

I am only using original units so if anyone is interested in having a look let me know

Matt

You have to remember that there are no trees anywhere on the Falkland Islands except for one or 2 outside Government House

Yea, i know this, but Nogova is the closest i can get. There are trees, but not too many, and there are no forests in the bit i am using.

I would prefer another island but it doesnt seemt that there are many around..

Still looking though

The maps being created in FLK mod are all 1:1 scale.  The reasoning for this is that we hope to portray the barreness of the location, which when you step back has its own beauty, especailly at sunrise or sunset (even in OFP!!!).  So far I have managed to limit the number of terrains down to 5 main maps, all of which have actions taking place on, as they did back in 1982. Yes they haev edge of the world syndrome, but when all things considered its a minor annoyance compared to what you will actaully be getting

Much research has been done and I have already re-done a few times just one of the more important settlements, slowly correcting earlier mistakes after finding new material to work from.

Most of the terrain outside the settlements is very very very very very... (you get the point) barren.  Its pretty much moorland (like Dartmoor, in southwest england).  There are occasional clups of grass and rocks scattered around (when I mean clumps I mean those that are noticeable above the standard terrain which varies as it is grazed by sheep).  Also in some of the more 'sheltered' valleys will be patches of gorse.

These pics that follow are of just one of the settlememts that are being worked on.

Most of what you see has been created for the mod, including hedging, gorse, buildings, roads, although where BIS bits suit they are used such as the fencing and trees (why create work where its not needed!!)

I would like to be able to advise on any other maps that get close to the terrain found in the Falklands but so far I haev yet to find any suitable enough, especially when full vis is used.

Yep FLK = http://www.flashpoint1982.co.uk/ (FLK being the tag we will be using)

Honestly I cannot estimate a date. The project is a lot bigger than first thought and I for one found that I am doign far more than originally intended (not only terrain work, but also all the ships!!).

We are working hard away at it with the intentions of quality rather than a rushed product.

This has ment some of my earlier work has been scrapped as it no longer meets the standard seen in many OFP addons. Most of the buildings in that picture above are at beta stage only, as the textures are very very simple and bland.

The hardest part we have found particulary with the islands is limited source material and very few contacts actaully there (one of my contacts happens to live in the settlement shown...., thus its one of the few that is near what is was visually).

When I started workign on the terrain just before wrpedit came out (think thats over a year ago now) I was workign on trying to get the elevations correct. Wrpedit is not the easiest of tools to use and island work was progressing slowly.

When visitor came out I did some experiements and found it was a lot more suitable to what I was doing and actaully scrapped everything except the grayscale elevation images I produced, and in effect started again. I am already well past where I had got to before.
