So what kind of information do you get on your pocket pc using that iridium thing?

Iridium is just a military sat phone net capable of data communication. Specifically what I was talking about is a data service provided by the French military. It's a region specific system that registers troop and threat positions. The client software (run on laptop or pocket pc) is a graphical GIS system that integrates that data and synchs with GPS. So you can see your current position on a map and all reported threats, friendlies, logistics etc in the area. It works two-way so that you can report observed threats. There are some additional features like area threat statistics etc

In 2001 when I last used the system they were planning to integrate an interface for requesting artillery and air support. It's possible that they have added that by now.

We had the system running on our group's laptop under windows, but the pocket pc version is supposed to be identical.

Good luck, Balschoiw! I'm kinda jealous... I'd love to be anywhere but here right now...

Anyway, take lots of pictures if you can and, if you're lucky, we'll be able to trade you for some OFP2 pics when you get back. smile_o.gif

Be safe!

Sounds cool like hell... cool.gif Almost a bit OFP- & CoC-ish but in real life.

lol imagine if someone hacked it so it bombed  ur own troops tounge_o.gif

It's encrypted and probably much more secure than a radio call. Furthermore satphones have a narrow band directed signal which makes it very difficult, if not impossible to triangulate the position.

The software running on the client is just an interface. All the information is stored on a server cluster somewhere in France.

Aye, it really sounds like the great scripting efforts of the OFP community, like artillery scripting  smile_o.gif Maybe you denoir was a little inspired from it when working on CoC?

Imagine in 50 years, when OFP 9 is used as client software.. With the possibilities to simulate an infantry attack on targets - up that very hill - on place  biggrin_o.gif

Have a safe tour, Bals. Keep your head down if the locals start taking shots at blue helmets!

Good luck m8.

Doubt you'll meet any of us down there, we brits can't afford to kill Iraqis at the moment let alone deploying to actually help people.
