You should visit the NATO Music Festival. I was there once and it was a great show with ~6 Bands in a football stadium. I think even the Swedes were there smile.gif

However, I am not so much in this music either and thus can't add a name to the list...

Don't get me started on the Halls of Montezuma.  A few years ago I visited Chapultepec with my then-girlfriend now-wife, a Mexican citizen.  I made the mistakes of explaining the lyrics of "The Marine's Hymn" and, not sensing the danger, the significance of the dress blues trouser bloodstripe.*  The couch was most uncomfortable that night.

*Corps lore claims that the bloodstripe symbolizes the officers and NCO's who died in the battle.

I love the overall sound of the post 2000 Russian Anthem, the lyrics of the American one, and the sense of history the British one evokes for me.

For traditional military marching music, Anchors Away is my favorite. I've probably marched over ten miles to it. For those of you that have ever had the opportunity to listen or march to live marching music, it's awesome. You can just feel that deep drum cut through you.

I also love the Navy Hymn. There are a many different verses that have been written for it, but I love the original, the airmen, and the Marine verses.

Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,

Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep

Its own appointed limits keep;

Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,

For those in peril on the sea!

Lord, guard and guide the men who fly

Through the great spaces in the sky.

Be with them always in the air,

In darkening storms or sunlight fair;

Oh, hear us when we lift our prayer,

For those in peril in the air!

Eternal Father, grant, we pray,

To all Marines, both night and day,

The courage, honor, strength, and skill

Their land to serve, thy law fulfill;

Be thou the shield forevermore

From every peril to the Corps.

Well you guys have just confirmed how sad you all are! tounge.gif

Marches? We'll all be discussing our favourite Operas next -

"La Boheme is just so profound and the pathetic fallacy of last scene really emphasises ... etc." sad.gif Not good!

How the Marines can run to their sing alongs is beyond me! They are so slow paced and morbid, what you really need is a Holly Valance song in your MP3 or MD and run along with the lovely images of her dancing motivating you to get fit! Plus when you're driving at 90mph down the motorway to a party in London you need all the windows open and James Brown blaring out at disturbingly high volumes!

Panzerlied defienty

1. Ob's stürmt oder schneit,

Ob die Sonne uns lacht,

Der Tag glühend heiß

Oder eiskalt die Nacht.

Bestaubt sind die Gesichter,

Doch froh ist unser Sinn,

Ist unser Sinn;

Es braust unser Panzer

Im Sturmwind dahin.

2. Mit donnernden Motoren,

Geschwind wie der Blitz,

Dem Feinde entgegen,

Im Panzer geschützt.

Voraus den Kameraden,

Im Kampf steh'n wir allein,

Steh'n wir allein,

So stoßen wir tief

In die feindlichen Reihn.

3. Wenn vor uns ein feindliches

Heer dann erscheint,

Wird Vollgas gegeben

Und ran an den Feind!

Was gilt denn unser Leben

Für unsres Reiches Heer?

Ja Reiches Heer?

Für Deutschland zu sterben

Ist uns höchste Ehr.

4. Mit Sperren und Minen

Hält der Gegner uns auf,

Wir lachen darüber

Und fahren nicht drauf.

Und droh'n vor uns Geschütze,

Versteckt im gelben Sand,

Im gelben Sand,

Wir suchen uns Wege,

Die keiner sonst fand.

5. Und läßt uns im Stich

Einst das treulose Glück,

Und kehren wir nicht mehr

Zur Heimat zurück,

Trifft uns die Todeskugel,

Ruft uns das Schicksal ab,

Ja Schicksal ab,

Dann wird uns der Panzer

Ein ehernes Grab.

Translation:

In blizzard or storm,

Or in sun warm and bright,

The day hot as hell

Or bone-chilling be the night,

Our faces may with dust be laid,

But spirits never fade,

No, never fade;

Relentless, our tank

Thunders out on a raid.

With engines a-howling,

Fast as is the wind,

We head for the foe,

Safe, as we're in armor skinned.

Our comrades still behind us roam;

We fight the foe alone,

Yes, fight alone.

We stab through the line

To break the foes backbone.

Whenever the foe

May appear in our sight,

We'll ram throttle full,

Then we'll humble all his might!

Of what use is our life if we

Our country serve freely?

Yes, serve freely!

To die for our country,

Our honour shall be.

With tank traps and mines,

Our foe tries to impede.

We laugh at his ruses;

We know he'll not suceed.

And when, in threat, his cannons stand,

Half hidden in the sand,

Yes, in the sand,

We can find our way

Over much safer land.

And should at long last,

Fickle Lady Luck leave,

And we remain here,

Leaving family to grieve,

A bullet with our name on it,

Find us and seal our fate,

Yes, seal our fate,

Our tank will our grave be

On that final date.

C-130 Rollin' Down the Strip

C-130 rollin' down the strip

64 Rangers on a one-way trip

Mission Top Secret, destination unknown

They don't even know if they're ever coming home

When my plane gets up so high

Paratroopers take to the skies

Stand up, hook up, shuffle to the door

My knees got weak and I hit the floor

Jumpmaster picked me up with ease

Tossed my knees into the breeze

Count one-thousand, two-thousand, three-thousand, four

My main opened with a mighty roar

But if my main don't open wide

I got a reserve by my side

But if that one should fail me too

Look out below I'm a-comin' through

If I die on the old drop zone

Box me up and ship me home

Pin my wings upon my chest

And then bury me in the leaning rest

Well if I die on a Chinese hill

Take my watch or the commies will

But if I die in the Korean mud

Bury me with a case of Bud

Hooah

The Soviet Anthem is definitely awesome.

Le Boudin always sounded silly to me.

facist song. Therefore banned in germany.

I´d appreciate if others would condemn facist songs also, but there seems to be a favour for them abroad.

I don´t like any military marches or songs. They only remind me of hurting feet and stupid drill.

I was just about to ask whether the thread title means: What is your favourite military music for marching? Because marching as in parades is one of the most fucked up things there is in military service. These aren't the napoleonic times anymore, no more infantry formations slugging it out on open fields of glory.

Do you get to keep your full Legionnaire uniform and white kepi/green beret after you have completed your contract?

It would be a shame to lose it after going through hell earning it.

Im in general not a fan of military marching music and consider it silly. But there are a few songs that i quite like.

-  sorry but the RAF march past is truly dreadful

The British Grenadiers

(not enough drums in this version for me)

(You have to imagine the Coldstream guards marching along to it on parade- or lines of men marching to death in the napoleonic era)

Some talk of Alexander,

And some of Hercules,

Of Hector and Lysander,

And such great names as these.

But of all the world's great heroes,

There's none that can compare

With a tow-row-row-row-row-row-row,

To the British Grenadier!

Those heroes of antiquity

Ne'er saw a cannon ball,

Nor knew the force of powder

To slay their foes withal.

But our brave boys do know it,

And banish all their fears.

Sing tow-row-row-row-row-row-row

For the British Grenadiers!

Whene'er we are commanded

To storm the palisades,

Our leaders march with fusees

And we with hand grenades.

We throw them from the glacis

About the enemies' ears.

Sing tow-row-row-row-row-row-row

For the British Grenadiers!

And when the siege is over,

We to the town repair.

The townsmen cry, "Hurrah, boys,

Here comes a Grenadier!"

Here come the Grenadiers, my boys,

Who know no doubts or fears!

Sing tow-row-row-row-row-row-row

For the British Grenadiers!

Then let us fill a bumper,

And drink a health to those

Who carry caps and pouches,

And wear the louped clothes.

May they and their commanders

Live happy all their years.

With a tow-row-row-row-row-row-row

For the British Grenadiers!

Variant:

The British Bayoneteers

(included because i think the lyrics are so overblown they are funny)

Eyes right, my jolly field boys,

Who British bayonets bear,

To teach the foes to yield, boys,

When British steel they dare!

Now fill the glass, for the toast of toasts

Shall be drunk with the cheer of cheers,

Hurrah, hurrah, hurrah, hurrah!

For the British bayoneteers!

Great guns have shot and shell, boys,

Dragoons have sabres bright.

The artillery fire's like Hell, boys,

And the horse like Devils fight.

But neither light nor heavy horse

Nor thundering cannoneers,

Can stem the tide of the foeman's pride

Like the British bayoneteers!

The English arm is strong, boys,

The Irish arm is tough.

The Scotsman's blow, the French well know,

Is struck by sterling stuff.

And when before the enemy

Their shining steel appears,

Goodbye! Goodbye! How they run, how they run!

From the British bayoneteers!

Jerusalem (couldnt find a decent version)

Ok this isnt really marching music but i used to have to sing it every day at school and yet despite that (or because of it) and despite that the whole idea of the song is patently stupid it never fails to stir some feeling in me.

"And did those feet in ancient time

Walk upon England's mountains green?

And was the Holy Lamb of God

On England's pleasant pastures seen?

And did the countenance divine

Shine forth upon our clouded hills?

And was Jerusalem builded here

Among these dark satanic mills.

Bring me my bow of burning gold!

Bring me my arrows of desire!

Bring me my spear! O Clouds unfold!

Bring me my chariot of fire!

I will not cease from mental fight

Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand

Till we have built Jerusalem

In England's green and pleasant land!"
