Are you serious? Or wait, what country was the joke about one navy having glass bottom boats so they could see the old navy?<span id='postcolor'>

Nah, Switzerland is landlocked, so they don't have a navy. Poland is the navy that has the glass-bottomed boats and the submarines with screen-doors<span id='postcolor'>

but their (swiss) land forces have a ... a ..... yeah , a "navy" element in their army<span id='postcolor'>

they have a donkey unit too... biggrin.gif

but dont underestimate them...up in the mountains they got military bases of size and capabilities that few of you can imagine.... but the swiss take this very seriously and are very strict on security issues.<span id='postcolor'>

yeah , there have been a few TV footages about these rock fortresses on french TV , swiss people could hold a real siege

they even mined some part of the mountains and most of the large road infrastructures have explosives inside

but the most impressive i've seen in one of these footages was a big part of a mountain sliding and a 100mm (or some other caliber) turret appearing

One of the worst navies in the world is the Swedish. Sweden has always had a big, proud navy. The only problem is that it has won only twice - once against Danish, British and Dutch combined forces and once against the Russian navy. On the other hand it has been sunk by just about every other European country.

Fortunately we have always had very good costal defences which is the reason why we are not speaking Russian today smile.gif

I'd like to think that our navy is very good today, but historical statistics speak against it. sad.gif

Well at least our amphibious units (not part of the navy) are world class smile.gif

-how do you sink a Swedish naval fleet?

-put it up agianst Lichtenstein navy patrol boat. tounge.gif

back on topic,

i think those German Weasles are pretty clever. however i still donot think that such weapons are great for prolonged warfare, especially in open places.

in US, we can have John Deere and put some armor on and still be as good as German Weasles tounge.gif

now, i think it's about good time to remind ppl that we do this in friendly manner, and not attacking/flaming other countries. we had plenty of old days when someone would go "which country has best military?" and 250 nations would say they do, and start flaming each other.

there is no exact way to say which one is "the best", so let's respect each other. wink.gif

(but then again, French military is the best when it comes to surrendering, and it is accepted as the universal truth, just like US forces are the best at friendly fire, and German forces are reknown for being dull.) tounge.gif

Hehe....here we go again!

We all know how good the swedish navy is! After all, Ivan had to litteraly park a sub on land to be detected.

I have to agree with Denoir that the coastal defence system is very effective - also historically:

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">The assault on Oslo was not so easy. The pocket battleship Lutzow was badly damaged by the Norwegian shore batteries in the fjord, and the Blucher was sunk by shore-launched torpedoes with the loss of 1,600 lives before the 163rd division managed to capture a large part of Oslo, the arsenal at Horten and the airfield. <span id='postcolor'>

http://www.what-if-you.com/ww2memorial/wwii__chapter_3.htm

I have some good pictures from my days as a cadet at the Coastal artillery officer school - where I'm sitting on one of the barrels of the cannon (28 cm projectile ) called "Moses". Due to my extreme lack of technical knowledge I'm not able to present the pictures here - if any of you know how to do it please let me know.  It's so enormous you can't put a leg on each side on the barrel. It was by the way bought from Krupp and put up to give the swedes an opportunity to loose yet another battle - hehe, but the germans ended up in the receiving line.

What's really funny is that when the germans aproached Oscarsborg the comanding officer had two problems: He did not know how to operate these enormous cannons because they were left out of service years back. Secondly, he did not know if the aproaching ships were german or english.

He solved this by sending a soldier to get hold of an old retired officer who knew how to operate the cannons. When everything was ready and the ships were sighted he ordered the crew to fire even if they didn't know the nationality of the ships. And history was written!

By the way - if any of you wonder about the nationality-stuff here is the explanation: in -39 british ships layed mines in norwegian coastal waters to prevent a possible attack by the germans. This caused a lot of speculation and many believed the brits would try to invade Norway in order to prevent the germans from operating their submarines from norwegian harbours.

Here are some pics of the cannons:

http://it-student.hivolda.no/prosjek....slo.htm

The norwegian coastal artillery has since become extremly high-tech. There are entire forts located inside mountains where you can lower the turrets and rocket-launchers into the ground. All of the rooms inside the mountain are a sort of metal cage suspended by rubber and springs to withstand blasts from nuclear weapons. The turrets can (when raised) take a nuclear blast the size of a hiroshima-bomb if blown outside a radius of aprx. 300 metres.

Apart from the stationary defense systems the coastal artillery also consists of mobile elite soldiers called "coast hunters". They are pretty much the same as their swedish counterpart and are very able because of very hard training, diverse weapons-systems (launchers etc) and good mobility provided by the swedish built "stormboat 90" :

Ok - back on topic! I saw the Wiesel on a documentary on Discovery Channel years ago. What fascinated me most about this able little creature was the simple maintainence and the availability of spare parts. You could litteraly go into any WV-dealer and replace almost any part of the engine.

I have always been interested "smart" effective solutions like this german vehicle and the english Scorpion etc.

When the Americans shoot, EVERYONE ducks".

You know the german army or "Bundeswehr" like the name already says is not an attack army. We are still only a defensive army and therefore cope with the german territory. And you also may know that huge parts of german border regions are basically woodlands, so my conlclusion is the Wiesel is pretty smart vehicle for us , isn´t it  wink.gif

Anyway the german "Gebirgsjäger" were famouse during WW2 and are still today. We are the first along with the paratroopers to go into german missions, because we are trained in every terrain, especially hills. We are a high-tech troop of skilled and physically fit people who , and now listen please, are all intelligent. You need brains when you want to fight in hills or deserts. And that is what we do.

Yes I am proud to be a Gebirgsjäger. "Hurra die Gams!"

The english translation of kustjägare is "costal ranger" smile.gif

fan.jpg

Amfibiebataljon (AMFBAT) 1, KJ kompani, Första pluton, "Fanatiska" - my old platoon. AMFBAT 1 was until a couple of years ago known as KA1 (Coastal Artillery 1) but the name was changed to reflect the role of the unit better. After I completed my KJ training, I applied and was accepted to the combat divers (which consist only of KJ but is part af the batallion staff company and not directly KJ Kompani). Later, I was forced to transfer out, but that's another story.

Yes, "Stormboat 90" is the Norwegian version of the Stridsbĺt 90 specially designed with a large hatch in the bottom so that Swedish divers can knock on it and have a laugh when the Norwegian crew opens it (and subsequently have to purchase a new boat) tounge.gif

Edit: I'm sorry, I don't know why I am telling all these Norge-historier (jokes about Norwegians). I never usually do that, but here I just can't resist wink.gif

haha...the swedish empire? You lost it all as far as I know.

However, Norway had great ambitions as a colonial superpower during the start of last century. Our colonial possesions include Queen Mauds Land on the south pole -where we ruthlessly dominate the penguins (I wonder if thats the origin for our not so famous rockets? ). We also grabbed Spitzbergen where we ruthlesly rule over ourselves, some icebears, a seagull or two and a lot of ruskies. Wooohooo!

LMAO!!!!!!!!

*ahem*

I believe that there are several new small scout vehicles, such as the Tracer, in development which will be used by the US and if I'm not mistaken the UK militaries.

The thing that seems cool about them is that it only takes one shot to take out a tank. I dont mean literally take out, as in blow it to smithereens, but a single TOW can easily disable the LRF and other fragile devices on a tank, which will put it at a huge disadvantage in a fight. So these little tanks can cause as much damage as a much larger tank. And the US/UK version is supposed to be super stealthy too, so woo... hoo! smile.gif
