Squad player looking to dabble in Arma.

Recommended Posts

Hello ladies and gents. I'm a veteran Squad player that is tired of the sitting on hands approach the dev's of that game are taking in finishing the game. As i am very frustrated with them, i'm looking to get away and try Arma 3. I'm an old fart lol, but an avid gamer, and have been since the late 90's. I'm really interested in Vietnam shooters. I ran team in a game called Vietcong in the early to mid 2000's. I'd like to get my feet wet but don't know how to get started. This game is vast and difficult to navigate. And by get started i don't mean play the training. I mean hooking up with a group to learn and have fun. Not looking for hardcore milsim, but maybe somewhere in between milsim and casual.

I'm also told that the multi play in Arma 3 is not very appealing, is that so?

I am sorry i missed the boat in this game, i really wish i hadn't. Will there is a new Arma game in the future? I know the performance of the game is a big issue so i was curious to know if anything new was in the works in terms of a completely new build of the game on a more favorable game engine?

I know where your going with this but for this part i would like point to out that Arma3 imo being the most difficult in terms of learning curve among the OFP/Arma series to get down

without some form of training, or at least insight into some things, unless your one to pick things up quickly by hands on.

May i recommend at least familiarize yourself with the VR Training under tutorials, it would not only show you basic stuff from stance, to shooting, vehicles, weapons, ect,.

most players, veterens who've played it for a bit could agree but would also suggest to play the campaign, trials, and scenarios.

Doing so at least the VR tutorials would get you ahead in the game when you do find that group that suits you, then they can show you more advanced things

instead of babysitting you on basic controls which majority imo are fairly easy to figure out.

You can even go into VR arsenal itself try out the basic weapons for the game and adjust your controls there, and then be ready for play when you do get into a group of choice.

Arma3 is a whole nother ballgame and cant be compared to squad, they are to different games with different functions, Arma3 is a military sandbox in and out of the game

its not limited to one thing, it is both SP, MP mod, terrain, script, code, and many other things you can build. Just pointing this out to you as some people that get into arma3 get

overwhelmed with the controls, functions, and aspects of the game whereas other games are straight forward,

in a nutshell patience and an interest in wanting to learn is key here.

In my signature are a few compilations, one that can help you since your starting out if your

interested is to take a look at this list linked below:

Here is a section of the forum for Squads, groups, clans, units, and milsims, at least a start i cant recommend any offhand that would be fitting.

Theres also this thread which might be more suitable for you:

Whoever told you that hasn't played arma that long then, or is used to a more run n gun laid back COD, modern warfare approach.

Any game has some unappealing aspects to it, thats a given, but one person's opinion is just that, what i would suggest is do like your looking for, find yourself a group

and play for a bit, also watch various utube videos and form your own opinion, dont accept or take everyone else's word on something until you've had first hand experience.

Do your own research and find out what this game is about, how to play, what you can play, who there is to play with, mods yes mods, theres thousands of them of every kind and every genre

like i said this game is a sandbox, you can play it however you like.

And i got to tell you, there are ALOT of MP, COOP, CTI, and what have you scenarios a group can play if you play with one, most likely a combination of

homemade custom and already built scenarios against AI, or even if you hook up with a group that they have a setup where like squad its TvT and PvP which is out there, search its there.

The missions aka Scenarios against AI come in staggering numbers, there are alot of popular missions that would seriously float your boat and satisfy what you seek, and or you can make your own

as Arma3 has a full blown 3d editor with a 2d editor component in it.

Possible we dont know absolutely for sure, there hasn't been any announcements as far as im aware, except for a new engine being worked on

called the Enfusian engine as the Arma engine is dated, so one can only presume one is in the works.

Hi,

yeah, you won't find many ladies here but there is plenty of gents. 🙂

You'll be happy to hear there is, among many, The Unsung Vietnam War Mod and probably quite a few communities running it. Browse through Squads & Fanpages subforum and perhaps you find a group that meet your criteria. There is also Player looking for a squad thread that you can use for groups to possibly find you, if you so desire.

Controls are not so intimidating as they seem either. Choose Apex preset and go from there. There is a lot of toggle duplicates that are separate bindings rather then options to tick. It's better this way because sometimes you may want both but the list gets long. Basically, if you don't plan on commanding AI, there is not much beyond your typical first-person shooter in terms of keybinds.

I dunno who told you that or what exactly they meant with that but MP is kinda the point for most players. Sure single player community is strong here but there is not many players that are exclusively playing SP. At least not because MP would be bad but mostly because they are just SP kinda guys or don't agree with BattleEye anti-cheat privacy policy. Even then, you have an option to play on private servers that don't need to run anti-cheat for obvious reasons.

Probably, not anytime soon though.

I wouldn't really put it that way, it's a complex topic. Granted, game could always perform better, there is quite a bit to be desired and a new engine is being developed although not sure whats the current situation on that. Basically, if you have a decent quad code CPU and mid tier ~post 2016 GPU, you should be fine as long as you find a good server that is running an optimized/well designed mission. AI is the thing that costs performance. In graphics options, view distance is obviously by far the most impactful setting. So, when you are fighting on the ground with an assault rifle, you don't need to go beyond 1000 meters. ~2000-4000m for ground vehicles, depending it's optics and capabilities. ~3000m+ for aircraft. That's somewhat favorable but you adjust based on performance. It's obviously better to have "fog" then playing on 15FPS. Most popular missions have settings such as CH View Distance for different situations already implemented but you can always use global setting in options.

Edit: Ninja'd by Gunter but perhaps you find something useful here as well. Have fun!

Not much left to add to what Gunter and Janez have laid out for you, but it's worth saying that your Arma experience can be pretty much whatever you want it to be. It's not a game with specific native gamemodes like AAS/Insurgency/CTF - although you can absolutely find those experiences - it is a sandbox. Your best bet is to decide what you want from Arma and then find a group that does that. Or start one.
