~Too Tall~ 0 Posted January 15, 2003 beta B52 bomber. B-52 thier site
Ludovico Technique 0 Posted January 15, 2003 I downloaded the B52 thing earlier as part of my quest to find the best bomber around. Here's what I reckoned to it: 1. It flies like a whale's fat mum. Fair play, its a big bugger and it should do. 2. The AI tries to ram it down your throat on bombing runs. My thinking is that if you really want an addon like this to be practical, which is could very easily be, there has to be a way to get the AI to bomb from distance. It doesn't have to be accurate, it is supposed to be a saturation bomber. Other than the niggles about the AI and stuff I thought it was pretty good. PS would it be possible to script a bomb run? Have the sound of a jet pass overhead, then lay down a pile of explosions in a line or something?

Have the sound of a jet pass overhead, then lay down a pile of explosions in a line or something?<span id='postcolor'> I also tried it out and believe it or not, this is the MOST maneuverable large bomber addon that I've tried yet. I was extremely happy that the AI can actually take it off at the Nogova airbase and that they actually will fly to the target area without hitting mountains. However as you experienced, the B52's start dive bombing targets and they blow themselves up. Now there are ways of creating bomb scripts that cause a line of bombs to fall as the bomber flies over a target. However here is the problem.... the "flyinheight" command seems to only work like up to 150 meters. If you put "this flyinheight 500", it won't work. I'm going to try using the "setpos" command to see if I can get the bombers up at a high altitude, but I suspect that even if that works, the AI pilots are just going to end up diving back down to a low altitude. So until the problem is sorted out, the whole heavy bomber idea might be impossible to properly implement unless you just show the bombers taking off and then just have a make believe bomb drop when the actual bomber is off the map somewhere by using some "camcreate" scripts to simulate the bombs dropping. As for the engine noise, at the altitude they operate at, you would, if anything, just hear a very distant engine sound barely audible. So that might be the way to do things. At any rate, back to the B52. I hope that the creator makes a "gunner" position in the rear gun position with quad .50 cal guns like on the real thing (although this may have been replaced by a vulcan cannon). Also the AI don't raise the landing gear when they fly and of coarse the textures could be much improved. Other then that I think it's a great beta well worth downloading!!! Supah 0 Posted January 15, 2003 Actually i believe a few b-52's managed to score kills in vietnam. The vietnamese pilots were told the effective range of the .50's was a certain distance. What their soviet instructors were forgetting was the these bullits were being speeded up by the wind flowing over the aircraft and their range was increased. A friend of my uncle (retired Dutch Airforce Lt-Col) who flew B-52's told me that, i guess he should know. One more cool thing about the B-52 is that its gears can actually pivot. So it could approach the runway with its nose at a 45 degree angle to the runway but its wheels would still be pointing in the right direction. That was done to counter its tendency to suffer allot in crosswind landings. It could also taxi that way because otherwise it cant use most military bases in europe. vade_101 0 Posted January 15, 2003 During linebacker II B-52 gunners were credited with two confirmed MiG kills. (Fifteen B-52s were lost during this operation.)

Shashman 0 Posted January 20, 2003 you guys on the first page : There is a tail turret but in the later models, it's a radar directed turret therefore removing the point of adding a manned tail turret to the B-
