Can modems wear out?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Just wondering, I've been playing OFP a lot lately online and never had any problems getting disconnected from the internet. Can modems wear out from game playing vs. surfing the net? Recently my computer seems much slower and I'm getting diconnected. If I move from one site to another, it takes forever. I have 56k and running 57600 speed. I joined a online squad and had to download ICQ, mIRC,TS... would these possibly create a problem?

Thanks for any replys - Kdog-

If you have ICQ, TS, (possible) filesharing running during a MP game this will effect your online game (and your internet browser)! All these tools will need bandwith, memory and CPU and you have not very much bandwith with your 56k modem.

I don't think that a modem "wears out" from online gaming biggrin.gif

Thanks Brain,

I don't know these things and thought maybe modems work harder while playing, or will burn out sooner than usual...

The problem happens when I"m just online (not playing) and things all of a sudden, are working slower.

Thanks for replying. Any other possibilities?? Kdog-

Also always check CTRL ALT DLT and go to processes thats on win xp and see if there are any .exes runing that dont need to be be carefull tough alot of those things are imporent. Also after so much time a modem DCs itself there are webpages to keep it runing but i dont know.

Check for Spyware using LavaSoft's Ad-Aware -- if you have a modem, you don't have a lot of bandwidth to start, and you don't want any of it to go to some stupid program that sucks it up.

And TeamSpeak (or any other voice program) will definitely cause your system to take a hit. See if you can get the other players to agree to the lowest quality/lowest bandwidth encoding.

Yea i used ad-aware and scaned my other PC found some spyware and removed it. Its a great program plus its free i think everyone that uses a p2p network should have it. I was useing a prog called IMESH and that installed spyware so i switched to kazza lite all clear now. But AD-aware can mess up some registrys right?

I've never heard of Ad-Aware messing up any registries.

By the way, the folks at LavaSoft have not spent a lot of time keeping Ad-Aware 5.x up-to-date, so there is a growing list of Spyware components that it won't find or remove.

The reason for this is that the 5.x engine is lacking some capabilities that they need to detect some new types of Spyware, so they've been concentrating their efforts on version 6.0. The initial release of Ad-Aware Plus 6.0 (the commercial version) is expected later this month, and the free version will be out shortly thereafter, probably early February.

Thanks Mister,

I downloaded it, and did find quite a few files on my system. Is it usually pretty safe to delete ALL the files shown?

Usually safe? Yes, usually.

Let's just say that Ad Aware isn't renowned for removing anything of value from your system.

Now, did it resolve your problem?

But remember that some programs which install spyware (e.g. kazaa) may not run any more if you remove the spyware installed by the program.

But if you need those programs you can solve this by reinstalling the software (and of course the spyware :-( ).

Mister Frag's tip regarding Teamspeak is absolutely correct. Is you have to use TS you shouldn't try to use heigh audio quality since this will result in increased bandwith needed by Teamspeak.

No, didn't solve the problem. Got online and just after...I had problems. When I move from one site to another, I need to click refresh cuz the site doesn't appear. Just a bit ago, I played and everything was fine. The problem seems to be when moving from one site to another (no display).

I will ask the guys to change to the "lower" settings for TS. Thanks for the tip.

I talked with MSN and everything seems to be ok..? What's the problem!!?
