KiTooN 63 Posted June 2, 2017 Ok, crazy thought. Why not implement heavy-duty AA platforms like the THAAD or the S-300. Hear me out, it serves multiple purposes : - Right now, CAP stealth planes have total control of the skies, they are challenged only by other fighter jets. Bringing in a heavy-duty ground AA even in small numbers could threaten a bit more jets and helis in a given area (let's say 8-16km range). Rock-paper-scissors. Because right now, jets are kind of a all-in-one vehicle able to do anything without being threatened. - SEAD missions could have a real impact and sometimes be a necessity, giving a good reason to exploit HARM missiles and the new sensor mechanics, like the data link. - TAC-OPS and Combat Patrol missions could benefit from it using a new strategic objective, take down the radar or the launchers. - There's already a HEMTT model, the only thing to do is stick a turret with 10 big tubes on it. A russian counter-part would have to be modeled, from scratch but could use the same base (maybe a BUK turret on a BTR-K platform ?). Although, my best pick is the Antey S-300 : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-300VM The good thing about it is that it has an autonomous tracking radar, while the THAAD vehicle is a simple launcher without any kind of detection system. - It looks freaking awesome !
Imperator[TFD] 444 Posted June 2, 2017 Would be nice indeed. In the mean time use the Mk-21 Centurion (found under NATO - Turrets) for all your super long range surface-to-air missile sites as it has a whopping 14km radar/missile range is very potent. One or two of these in a mission zone (especially with the updated data-link functionality in dev branch) are extremely capable at denying airspace to the enemy.
CaptainAzimuth 714 Posted June 3, 2017 Not to get technical, but THAAD isnt quite anti aircraft. It's anti ICBM meant to elimimate an aspect of war that would never fit into arma's map sizes. Nice idea though.
Antilochos 106 Posted June 3, 2017 Like the idea. And while you at it BI, throw in a little bonus and use the Antey model for giving us back the old Arma 2 missle truck. Always liked that truck.
chortles 263 Posted June 3, 2017 @KiTooN If you don't mind eight missiles instead of ten this Redditor attachTo'd the HEMTT and the carrier static defenses! Even if you leave them static though, as per Imperator-TFD in May 29's dev branch update the Mk21 Centurion had its radar coverage extended (11-14 km depending on sky or ground background) but narrowed (only 15° wide) so that it's reliant on targets received/transmitted from the Praetorian 1C's 360° air search radar which goes out to 7-10 km; this mechanic also works with the Cheetah/Tigris whose radar goes out to 6-9 km (can identify a target's type at 5 km). In return, the Centurion's 'RIM-162' missiles have a detect/track/lock range of 12 km and the locking 'cone' is almost a full hemisphere at 170°... so please believe me when I say that on dev branch a Centurion paired with a Praetorian (neither of which has an engine to cause a heat signature, thereby precluding IR missile guidance) is a deadly combination for CAS.
