Crashing!

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I emailed the support address (from wolfmanfenris@aol.com) and still have not had a reply. I am running version 1.46 of OFP (but have the same problem whatever version, and free of all addons) and my system persistently crashes at no particular time. I'm using Windows XP. Previously I was using 98SE, but I was having problems with that and OFP, seemingly because it did not dynamically assign IRQ settings.

Here's the details from my DxDiag.txt file. If someone could please help it would be superb. One of my main reasons for wanting to get broadband is to play OFP, and also I am holding off buying Resistance until I know it is actually going to work!!

I suspect that your problem would go away if you added more memory.

256MB if not enough with XP. The swap file is also a bit small.

Cheers for getting back to me.

I upped the VM to 500-800 on one HDD and 300-600 on the other (I presume it works okay splitting it accross drives like this) and I'm waiting to see if this has an effect. I may go and invest in another 256mb of RAM. If this clears it up I'll post and let you all know!

Thanks again...

Well, I've increased my pagefile to 1000-1500mb and the problem still hasn't resolved. Is this genuinely likely to be a memory issue? I know my system is not SOTA any more, but 64mb graphics, 1600xp CPU and 256mb DDR RAM should be more than enough, no? Even if I have gone to XP...

It's definately not addons related as I had installed it from scratch on a newly formatted HDD with a newly installed OS. Talk about virginal, it had a hymen ffs! smile.gif

If somebody out there really thinks it could be memory related then I'll ty ponce some from somewhere, but it don't seem all that likely to me.

The idea of setting paging that high when you only have 256mb of RAM is absolutely insane.

Reduce your paging to 320-768 approximately as you will severely affected your PCs performance like that.

Paging should only be Min: Ram+50-80mb. Max: Double Min Approx.

256MB is the MINIMUM ammount of system memory you should try to run Resistance with.

You should absolutely upgrade to at least another stick of 128mb.

As for crashes it could be driver related, but most crashes are due to lack of system resources.

Buy more RAM, see how you go.

Alright, nice one. The only reason I'd put VM up that high is because someone here told me it was a bit low (I think my system set it at about 350-750). Note though that it is not resistance that I am running, until I can get OFP playing properly I'm not going to buy the expansion...

Cheers

We searched our crash report database and we are unable to find your report. This might be caused by variost facts, like:

- you did not sent it to support@bistudio.com, but to some other address (Codemasters?)

- you sent it, but it wast lost on the way

- you sent it, we received it, and we lost it someplace here

No matter which of the above applies, I would recommend you to send context.bin and Flashpoint.rpt files to support@bistudio.com and hopefully you will get some reply from us this time.

Got it working in the end, but it's a bit odd... Excuse me if it's a bit sketchy too.

I went into BIOS and turned the cycle speed or whatever it is from 133 to 100 for the CPU and RAM so that my 1600 XP (1.4Ghz) chip is now running at 1050Mhz and I've had no problems. Note it was not overclocked, it is supposed to run at 1.4Ghz. Trouble is I don't know if it is the CPU or the RAM at fault. I set it so the processor was running at 100 and the RAM at 133 and it started crashing again, but I guess that could be because the two are supposed to run at the same speed. Bizarrely enough no other games seemed to have a problem!!

Anyway, I can play now even if I can't get full benefit of my machine. Went out to get the Resistance expansion and am very happy with the improvements made!!!

Maybe it`s a heat problem? Do you have monitoring installed?

The 3DMark 2001SE is very good for systemtesting. If a system runs a few loops without locking, normally the system should be fine. On the hardware-side. But then there is win-dumb tounge.gifwink.gif

My guess would be your memory is not constructed to run at 133 MHz bus.

Did you also try running CPU at 133 MHz bus and memory at 100 MHz (if it is possible to set it in the BIOS this way)?

You could also try running CPU at 100 MHz bus, but with higher CPU clock multiplicator, achieving 1.4 GHz (if supported by your BIOS/motherboard).

Cheers Suma,

I think it is likely to be the RAM at fault, I will try borrowing/thieving some and seeing if that fixes it. I don't think I can overclock my CPU and it won't allow CPU@133 and RAM@100 but I can play quite happily for now at slower speeds.

Just said in another post that it's really good to see how much OFP has come on. I had been out of the loop for a while as I couldn't really play it, but to come back to the Resistance expansion and really quality O2 constructed user mods has really improved my already all-time-favorite game!!

Guest BratZ

I think its heat myself.I've seen this several times (AMD users not able to run at full bore)

Clean ,check your heatsink/fan and maybe buy oversized.

I'm running a tbird 1333 and i've encountered various reboots until I took my cover off and inserted another fan.

Monitor your heat on that cpu, mine reboots at 64c

Now that is interesting. I'd checked before and at 133 my CPU temp was about 68C but at 100 it is about 62C. That could be the problem, but like I say it seems to crash when the RAM speed is high. Plus it doesn't seem to crash when doing anything else...
