I've purchased Arma, and looks like a ton of fun.  As I play though I can't figure out general things like how to menu select for repairs and accessing commands.  ie, I ran into a Tempest truck, it was broken - I had repair kits, but no matter where I stood next to it I could only take more repair kits from the vehicle and not apply them.

Anyway, is there a basic of basics tutorial area?  I did a youtube search but hard to find specific data like this.

Thanks in advance.

Hi ginn, Welcome. :) This isn't the most intuitive game sometimes. It sounds like you aren't engineer class. Only they can use the repair kit.

Okay fellas, gather around me because I'm going to tell you a great secret discovered by our forefathers that will greatly simplify your life and quite often prevent people from seeing you as a lazy person who wants other people to do all the work for him. Are you ready?

Here it goes:

READ A GODDAMN INSTRUCTION MANUAL BEFORE YOU ASK FOR HELP

Too harsh for the day after Christmas, Semi.

ginn, search google for Arma 3 basics, there's a number of good things, especially on youtube. This is a VERY complex game and it's tough to learn just the elementaries. Stick with it though, it will reward you.

Probably but come on, Arma has a built-in Field Manual which covers all of its mechanics and features (including vehicle repairing, under Vehicle Controls > Repair tab) and accessible at any time by a simple hit of Escape button. It's quite comprehensive and written in a concise, simple manner. There is no excuse for not reading it.

I've never read it, but you probably knew that, lol. I was lucky, all those years ago, to have a couple of experienced players who took my hand and led me through the jungle that is Flashpoint 1.96.

I hear you, and that is exactly what I did.  Part of the problem in this case is you need to put two things together in my for instance - which isn't easy to "read".

First had to know I needed to be an Engineer.  Second, how to apply.  Since I didn't know the first part I couldn't lookup something I didn't know.  Thanks for the others on helping.

Since this game is more complicated than most, I wish there was a more comprehensive, yet basic, method to learning the game.  I'm running through the tutorials and campaign trying to pick up what I can.

So you're telling me that it's not easy for you to understand a two sentences / 33 words long article that contains virtually everything you need to know about repairing? Don't be funny. :)

Field Manual is the most basic, easy-to-understand and comprehensive source of information available anywhere, anytime. It is your best bet to learn the game, not YouTube videos.

So the whole classes "thing" in Arma can indeed be be a bit confusing. Let me try and break it down for you:

There are 4 specialist classes:

  • Combat Life Saver
  • Repair specialist
  • Explosive specialist
  • Engineer.

The combat life saver per default has 10 FAKs and 1 med-kit. He is the only one that gains a benefit in healing units. The med-kit allows him to "heal" to 100%. Depending on scripts and mods in use he can also be the only one who is able to revive a downed player, other scripts or mods will allow anyone with a med-kit in the inventory to revive.

The repair specialist is like a regular rifleman, except that he has a toolkit in his backpack. He can repair any vehicle up to a status where it is usable again - unless it has been completely destroyed. Without the toolkit he cannot repair. He is not able to defuse mines.

The explosive specialist is what you would call a "sapper" or "demolitions expert". He also has a toolkit in his backpack, as well as a mine detector and several charges (no satchel), anti-personnel and anti-vehicle mines. He cannot repair vehicles and without his toolkit he is unable to defuse mines. The diver explosive specialist is similar except that by default he only has explosive charges in his backpack.

The engineer is a combination of the explosive and repair specialist. He has a toolkit as well as a mine detector and explosive charges / satchel charge. He can both defuse mines and repair vehicles.

Contrary to the toolkit, any unit can carry a mine detector and increase it's mine detecting abilities, albeit not defuse mines.

Afaik in Arma 3 vanilla these are the only instances where the unit class actually plays a role in its abilities to perform an action.
