benargee 20 Posted May 15, 2015 Hello, Does any one know how to get the kind of cinematic camera movement that Dslyecxi has in his videos? Examples: Arma 2: Arma 3: I am more specifically talking about how his camera loosely follows the subject while the camera stays quite steady without too much rigidity. Over all the camera work is very smooth in most aspects. While I dont expect him to hand over his work, I would like to have have a few tips to get more authentic camera effects. Also, does he even script most of his cameras, or are they done free hand via control input and some script to roughly and smoothly interpret those inputs? All in all, I have been very impressed with His camera work in his cinematic videos. Also, When filming units, Does he use pure AI or is it choreographed with players. For his helicopter segments with fine control of the aircraft while moving around outside, I am fairly certain he uses the unitcapture functions or some variation of it. I am aware of most of the camera commands, just haven't mastered them yet. Thank you.
AZCoder 921 Posted May 15, 2015 He might be using GCam. Demo here I've used the unitcapture commands heavily, wouldn't surprise me if that's one of his techniques, but I can't say either way.
breeze 0 Posted May 15, 2015 Gcam doesn't really work though? I was able to get the cam to work but when I loaded the recorder instead of the cam for the recording aspects is just doesn't work right it kind of droops like your looking down and the menu wasn't opening. I thought Gcam was one of the best Arma addons ever because it allowed average guys to make a good video. Cam scripting is hard to just pick up and get and when you begin mission making it is overwhelming, because you have to learn so much. The editor, basic scripting, basics for animations, some sort of communications with the player, be it text, hints or the nice voice overs, the briefing intro screens and then throw cams in LOL....Gcam was a savior!! and yes mission making in the beginning is tough at least if you want to turn out a decent mission. I mean no offense to anyone here but I have seen some terrible missions lately. Some guys just upload to steam and their mission doesn't even work. Others haven't got tasks working or no waypoints. I think these types of missions deter from the game, what I mean is a new person comes in and tries Arma and then gets 4 or 5 bad missions and decides the game sucks because the learning curve is steep and half the crap he downloads doesn't work. so they stop playing. I have then again seen some fantastic missions I got one today "lone Survivor" I am a pretty horid player yet I am kind of slow in spotting opponents and prefer single player at this point and the AI usually has a field day with me. I have mad it through all of the scenarios and most of the campaign buit I found it to be tough. This mission he made it easier for the noob type of player the AI was kind of easy but the cutscenes and the way it was done followed the movie and was easy to follow what was to be done Great mission. I would pay money to get a good working copy of Gcam again I loved it!!!!

In most cases it is more time consuming to have everything on rails, but it is the most effective way. see this camera scripting tutorial to see how you can put a camera on rails. also unitcapture/unitplay tutorial (of sorts anyways)

All in all, I have been very impressed with His camera work in his cinematic videos. Not that I would know 100%, but I am pretty sure most of the stuff is free hand camera usage that he captures live with Dxtory. Scripted cinema (even the great ones) are easy to identify because they are very stale and choppy compared to using the camera free hand. Dslyexci uses some more simple shots as well that look a bit more like camscripts, you can almost instantly tell from ultra linear cam movements, zoom- ins / -outs and that sort of stuff. IMO what separates good scripted cinema from the bad is well chosen shots and angles where any camera movement is well thought out. If you want to look into some amazing scripted cinema, un-pbo Undeceived's campaign "Dying Ember". There's some mind-blowing cinema in there. Reveal hidden contents Especially the one where the KSK comes to rescue the main character. It's sort of a shame that addCamShake was not made to be used in cinema (although there may be a workaround), since a ultra light shake would already make natural shots easier. Dslyexci has a huge community under his belt, I think a lot of stuff is either choreographed as you say or simply captured from observing ShackTac operations. Again, simple stuff is probably made with AI, especially shots around single units etc. Edited May 16, 2015 by Mad_Cheese
