Uniform and/or Vehicle Recognition Guide?

Recommended Posts

Newbie here and total confusion reigns.

There are a LOT of different uniforms and quite a few vehicles in ARMA3 and afaik no guide to sort them out. There are a lot of images on the net, but many are unlabeled and not useful. I've died a couple of times not being sure about soldiers and would really like to be able to sort them all out. I'm sure I'm just not finding something the every one uses.

Help!

Something something CSAT bug helmets. Something something Ifrit bugmobile.

OPFOR recognition in a shellnut.

Familiarise yourself with each factions camo/colours. They may look similar at first glance but they are very different. NATO - tan MTP, AAF - green digital, CSAT - brown hexcam. Try placing a soldier from each faction side by side in the editor (and make sure they wont kill each other) or just study each faction's uniform and gear in the virtual arsenal. Or, you can visit each faction's showcase to see all their vehicles, weapons and gear.

If you can't make out the colour then you'll have to make out their silhouette. Like TheEvanCat said CSAT have bug shaped helmets, the AAF have rounder helmets plus they have smaller vests, And NATO have 'blocky' helmets.

As for vehicles you'll just have to memorise which belongs to each faction or just rely on their camo.

I hope this helps!

Thx guys, a fast response too.

Think I'm yearning for the recognition guides of real world forces I used to have once upon a time. I'll see if I can find the Faction Showcase mentioned, that should be helpful. It could be just me, but I feel a large part of the learning curve is a lack of documentation on HOW to do things, there is quite a bit on WHAT.

Hey, found some really good pics for IFF (indication of friend or foe) in this official guide for Arma 3 - http://ttp3.dslyecxi.com/2_basic_infantry.php

Scroll down about a quarter and you'll see side-by-side comparisons of soldiers and vehicles from each faction

Good question..., and not that easy to answer for a new guy.

Arma, right out of the box has single-player scenarios for each faction.

I think the best way to know the look & gear of a faction is to play as that faction.

Can also try the editor. It's not too hard to use. Can place units and groups on the map, spawn in, and take a good look.

Think the new 'virtual armory' may be the thing to use?

There may be some user-made missions that will suit your needs.

Anyways, good luck & welcome to arma.

--PS, always pid your target online; make sure you don't throw a nade by "accident" either.

Not to seem dickish, but my general rule of thumb is if they are shooting me, I shoot back, doesn't matter the uniform, unless ROE indicates otherwise :).

Thx for the great advice, esp SomeSangheilli's - that pic is just what I was thinking of. Dslyecxi's book as an eBook is a good example of the problems with using eBooks for manuals. I actually bought the hard copy and just got it this afternoon, much easier to find thing in. For example, I had completely missed the IFF section and I had looked repeatedly.

This is a really old thread, but I was still looking for an answer. My issue was that if your character is a certain side, you cannot pick up and wear certain uniforms, even if they are basic clothes.

What you can do is go into the editor, enter the 3D outfit menu, and hover your mouse over a uniform. The first letter U stands for "Uniform". The second letter stands for the first letter of the side it belongs to, so Blufor, Opfor, Independent, Civilian. Any more letters designate a mod or faction.

So, "U_O_Officer_Uniform_ocamo" is an Opfor uniform, and this means that only Opfor characters can pick them up and put them on.
