Alcohol in america

Recommended Posts

Tomorrow I am going to America, now i know in america you have to be 21 or something to buy alcohol and such. What im wondering, is if i bring some on the plane over to America, will it be confiscated from me and such?

How do the laws work? Is it illegal to possess alcohol underage or just illegal to buy it?

Tell them you have nothing to declare, and hope to God they dont check your bags smile.gif

But really, dont worry about it. They arent going to card you upon seeing you're carrying alcohol- I know many kids who have brought some over, and the biggest challenge was their parents or chaperones, not customs. You'll be fine

to answer your question though...it is illegal to posses alcohol, purchase it, or consume it if you are under the age of 21. This is true in most parts of the States.

if you buy them from duty-free on plane, they might ask for ID...but i'm not sure.

then again, as Tex mentioned, you might get away without declaring. but if you get cought, don't be surprised at fines.

so my suggestion is avoid. tounge.gif

I suggest you take a trip to Quebec, the legal drinking age is 18 there, or you can come to Ontario where it is 19, if you are 19. smile.gif

P.S.

Stay away from mass produced American Beer, it tastes like shite.

When I was in college, I was going to NYC on a weekend trip from Canada (where drinking is legal from 18), and we stopped at the duty free store to pick up some cheap booze for our use in the hotel (we were all under 21, so we had to make due with drinking in our rooms).  So after we had the booze, we're at the US Customs booth and we declare that we stopped at the duty free store (we couldn't say no, it's less than 100 feet from the booth and the guard saw us drive out from the duty free parking).  So he asks us if we bought any alcohol or tobacco, and we told him we did buy some bottles, but we were all over the Canadian legal age.  But he said we were underage in the states and told us we couldn't bring it into the country.  So we went back to the duty free store and they took back the bottles after some major bitching on our part.  This was back in 1995, and since then I never tried to bring alcohol across the boarder into the states.

Oh ya, never lie to a US customs officer, because if they catch the lie, you could be refused entry to the US for several years afterward.

That went right over my head. biggrin.gif

What's the legal age in Wisconsin? How long are you staying in the States?

Ahhh, c'mon, were much more friendly than those American types.

I find it kind of strange to have a limit like that. In most European countries there are no direct age limits on purchasing alcohol, and certainly none for possession. Sweden is one of the exceptions where you have to be over 18 to buy alchohol in a bar and over 20 to buy hard liquor from special alcohol shops (you can get it though in bars and you can buy beer). Possession is however not illegal.

Kind of strange that you trust a 18 year old to buy a gun, but not booze confused.gif

Just find someone in the States to bootleg for you. biggrin.gif

I'm willing to bet the friend you're visiting will likely know someone who does this sort of thing. It's usually the way that underaged sorts get their potent potables without fake ID.

Just be careful of the friends dad who might take exception to your plying them with alcohol!! biggrin.gif

I have no problem with Alcohol at all. What I have a problem is is with people who get drunk and drive, or preform other tasks that could hurt others. Ireally do not care a whole lot about what those guys getting drunk and urting themselves, but when you hurt others that when it is bad. I think that people should be able to buy beer at 18, but there should be extremly strict laws when it comes to Alcohol.

I just had an idea! I could get you some alcohol! For my science project one year I made it, but it must have been nasty and dangerous to drank. tounge.gif

Dangerous to drink? most likely it was lethal tounge.gif

We can drink at 18 here in england, though most kids start going out and drinking cheap cider in parks at night at 15 or younger. Its a culture thing.

Yes, she would. MIP (Minor in Possession) can ruin your day, especially if you get caught with it in the car.

I dont think they will cause you any trouble, you are a foreigner and therefore they will treat you as such. The exit of the airport is like a border, if you cross it and they catch you with alcohol you can still say you didnt know, then you got to throw it away and may enter, so you wouldnt actually comit a crime "within" the country. But before you pee into your pants you may also wrap it in nice paper so it looks like a present that you bring for your "guest family". I got alcohol in Michigan when I was 18 only by showing my german passport! Just give it a try!

The question shall not be popped until a little later biggrin.gif

The reason for the bubbly is of course being re-united with your loved one after being apart for 3 months! its not too pleasant and deserves some well earned drink
