Questions on Roads (Design approach)

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

im planning to get into mapmaking... now i have read trough some basics and atm im planning/designing a small map. Now i have one point where i stuck a bit.

Where do i start with planning the roads and/or places (e.g. flat center places in towns). Do i have to shape and flat them out during creating the heightmap or at a later stage in TB or will the terrain be flat automatically everytime a road-piece is placed ?

Same with all places that i would like to have flat... industrial areas, airports, etc.

Hope everyone understand what i would like to know. ;)

Thanks in advance.

I'm sure someone with more map-hours that me will answer too - but by trial and error (many, many hours of error!), I found that the best approach was to do your big terrain smoothing for roads and built areas in L3DT, using the satmap as a drape. In my experience, L3DT is good for big areas, but a pain for fine detail. So I did my big earthmoving in L3DT, and then did the fine adjustments in Buldozer (using the various terrain shaping brushes). This can be very laborious - especially if you have roads on slopes or hilly terrain - so if anyone has a better workaround, I'd be happy to hear it! :)

Simply use flatten tool (hold left shift) with any brush size in buldozer, I find the result is very satisfying and you can adjust much more in Bulldozer than L3dt.

Wasn´t there a script to flatten the terrain under the road shapes in Terrain Builder?

I remember reading something about it on some posts, but I totally forgot where and cannot find it no more. Please correct me if I´m wrong, I may got confused with the old Visitor script...

There was a script for Visitor 3 that smoothed roads but that doesn't work on vectors lines. There is a script for Visitor 4 that does it as well but unless you have VBS3 that won't do you much good. To the best of my knowledge there is no good automatic solution for ArmA 3 but I could be wrong. Best bet is probably the smooth brush in TB.
