Your opinion on Wasteland and Life servers?

Recommended Posts

It has become apparent that the server list has become an overpopulated mess of Life and Wasteland servers. What's the appeal? Why do so many people like to pretend they are Greek police officers or run around all of Altis with a pistol? How do people manage to accept the awful framerate that is present within almost all of these servers? Why is everyone in these servers straight-up retarded?

I don't see the appeal for players. It's a massively-distributed generic mission. Why aren't there any servers hosting fun missions, serious missions, PvPs, community-made work, and not these money-grabber exploit missions?

I'm not going to go into how these servers rake in so much money from "donations" (some sell features for money, unlocking special things for "donors"). Not to mention how there are Life servers that simply throw in some community addons (work made by our community members from ArmAholic and the BI Forums) and claim they are a brand new mission, limiting players to a small selection of custom vehicles, weapons, etc and reserve a large portion for "donors". This was heavily prevalent in ArmA2, and there's no reason not to believe it happens in ArmA3 either.

Oh well, I'm going to try and limit my venting so I don't get banned. What's your opinion?

Let's be honest: Playing cooperative missions on public servers is horrible. Cooperation shrinks to a minimum when people lack the necessary means and skills of communication (which a lot of people do on public servers), which means that those major missions like Annihilation/BeCTI/Domination are not as much fun as they could be.

Public games belong to the game modes that generate at least a little bit of fun for 'loners'. Wasteland and Life seem to do that, as little to none cooperation is needed for people to 'function' within these game modes.

My personal problem with Life servers is that I can't for the life of mine figure out what people find amusing in playing on Life-Servers, as coordinated cooperative action in real missions tends to be thousand times more fun. Additionally I don't get why Herbert McAverageplayer needs his own Life server and Bertram Standardman needs his own Life server and Peter Meanvalueguy needs his own Life server. Donation money may be a reason, but even without that it just seems strange to me, that's all.

They don't bother me apart from the donation for benefits thing.

It gets annoying when (as Belbo pointed out) everyone wants their own Life server but have zero technical experience, and I myself receive questions on Steam on how to set up SQL servers, yet they don't know what a query is...

I refuse to offer help to them.

Life is cops and robbers 2.0. Kids (and adults) love this stuff. It's not really surprising EA is making a BF4 cops edition.

It's also very pick up and play, no real restraints nor dependency on others. It's freedom wearing a silly hat. It's also doesn't require a whole lot of imagination to create analogue activities, and everybody can understand the concepts as it's mostly taken straight out of everyday life. They're playing a what-if alternate universe RPG. It just appeals.

As to why everyone wants their own life server: nobody likes to work crappy menial chores (the life civ/cop jobs) in their spare time, all the time (if all you play is life). It's much easier being a god in your own little patch of the internet and just allow yourself infinite everything. It also takes away the sense of accomplishment, but hey, who cares?

Wasteland imho is a stroke of genius. There's some really well thought out gameplay mechanics at play there and it works splendidly for both solo-players and those looking for a team-effort. To me that alone is rather impressive.

Conceptually and in execution I think both are pretty fun and have their place, but unfortunately it's the players that make the experience one that's just awful. But that's the only reason a lot of people play it, just to mess with others and see what reactions they can get. It's kinda sad that both turn into trolling simulators really.
