agree on your thoughts re laser etc. As a pilot in a two seater if it also has a gunner and you are on manual fire, your flying/aiming/firing/countermeasures its just another thing that i don't think you need to worry about + if its implemented for the gunner and you really want to do it just go manual fire?

he's asking for it for the solo pilot of an AV8 or A10 i think. I'm not sure how it would work though, and whether this is something realistic.

ohhh ok i didn't really read his post that closely. hmmm I think the current ins/gps system works fine, its basically the same thing but without the fancy camera view.

using a laser designator inside the cockpit is tricky enough, as we have found using it on the A6 intruder, F4 phantom and F105-F thunderchief...

the munition takes time to hit the target, and the camera cannot look 360 degrees, so you need to line up correctly, set a course to target, set altitude and speed correctly (slow speed and medium height) then the gunner locks his laser and fires the bomb, then guides onto target. this works ok, but there are drawbacks:

1. the munition can take so long to hit ground level that the camera loses sight of the target

2. the gunner may not be able to see the target clearly when he has to start his firing procedure, meaning it's a little dodgy that he may be firing without ever being able to acquire his target (ok in nam lol but not in modern fighting ROE)

3. you cannot give the gunner control of the aircraft machine-gun (e.g. by placing it in his turret weapons/magazines) or else his gun becomes a moving turret weapon!

4. the plane is at very high risk of being successfully engaged by ground fire during this run

so to make this work in solo pilot, the drawbacks would be:

1. the pilot would not be looking where he was going, and his controls would be lost in camera view - if the munition took a while to hit target this period of loss of control would be prohibitive

2. it is possible that his cannon would be able to move like a blister-turret - not good

3. the acquisition time to lock laser targets can be quite long, meaning he would need to be in camera mode for a long time BEFORE approaching target, especially in MP. this means that he would have trouble lining up on a target properly.

are there any good examples of this working in arma in solo pilot mode? i've never used mando missile, nor ACE.

basically, in combat atm we use an apache, hokum, hind, lynx, ah6x, JTAC spotter or bradley warhammer, btr90 etc to lase targets for aircraft.

in arma JDAM's have IR and laser lock so you can do both targeting types with those bombs.

also all our gunships can lase targets and fire at the laser with their appropriate missiles.

remake proxies for 4 choppers DONE

next up:

edit the wings on the Mi35VM

repro the model.cfg for all hinds

vehicle config the variants, with anims and effects scripts, factions, skins, etc

add pickles sounds

binarise models

new: re-skins?

new: ideally, make the GUV gunpod (2 types) and the S24 rocket

it's like a production line we have going here!

this is basically what i was suggesting, but with a smoother camera control, similar to the camera available on AH64 and Cobra and a laser designator similar to the ACE system.

If you like realism and advanced features and other amazing stuff for arma 2 you should greatly try ACE. it's available for free on Play With Six software. it changes nearly everything (ballistic, sounds, visual effects, new weapons, vehicles, reticles, interraction system, healing system and much more...) the degree of realism is just bluffing, much more serious than the original version. you guys would probably like it since you created your mod with the same spirit.

so the pilot has a 360 degree targeting camera, which he uses to create a laser designation target on his crosshair. He can lock the camera to this target, and this combined with 360 degree swivel allows him to easily target and deploy laser tracking weapons.

I need now to check what bomb targeting systems exist that are remotely like this because I am unsure of how they work IRL.

re ACE, it comes with too much baggage for many modders like myself to want to use it.

exactly.

aim, activate laser designator, launch your laser guided bomb or missile and booooom. these states of the art camera have girostabilization system to keep aiming on target with maximum stability :

you mean targeting pod models ?

well, the US forces mainly use the SNIPER ATP (equiping most of US air forces planes) made by Lockeed Martin.

ok today's updates for inclusion in next release:

F-35/B added with VTOL and proper proxies in weapon bays, no wing pylons.

F-35/A and F-35/B both have animated weapon bays, when you launch a weapon for them they open and close.

improved shelldrop fx (includes new gunpods) added to Mi24, ka52, AH64D, AH1Z, F35, AV8, Su25, AH6

fixed some missing rvmats (mainly in ka52/ su25 lights)

sweeeeet, i just got the independent laser targeting camera working in the Su34 gunner seat! uhrah!

so gunner can target ground with his laser designator and strike targets with missiles and bombs that lock this.

thanks to Aplion for showing me how! all that work we did on the A6 has paid off here.

working on 76 new proxies for the wings and body so we can kit them out like this:

ok some workshop pics of the upcoming Su-34 Fullback makeover

features:

- 9 different pre-set roles + variable role with selectable loadouts

su25 having a slight problem with the vikhr launcher using this point... checking proxies...fixed! needs no entry in proxyshape to use that mem point...

Variety of targets engaged from T90, SA13, BTR90 through to buildings, infantry clusters, and GPS/INS target data

Weapons: kab500, kab1500, AS11, AS12

Weapon release ranges: 500m to 5000m. Optimum 2000m

Fly in height: 400m to 2200m. optimum 750m

Attack speed: 400 kph to 1200 kph, optimum 5-600 kph

AoA flat, no look down required by pilot

Hit rate: 100%

Damage: Significant, effective, battle-winning.

ok so next up is a workover of the old "twin fixed gunpod + moving nose-mounted gun" tracer and muzzle-flash problem...

evidence that this may / may not work?

twin miniguns on AH6J work fine

in unsung mod we have a cobra-G that fires twin tracers from the wing-mounted miniguns and singletracer from the nose mgun

we also have hueys with twin miniguns or quad M60s that fire twin tracer, and doorguns that fire single, and all have muzzle-flash

A2 tunguska has twin cannon tracers, though

shilka has 4x tracers

Zu23 has one tracer line (having looked, it is missing a second set of memory points for chamber and muzzle 2)

BMP2 has both cannon and mgun tracer and flash from single turret...

so plan is to make this work as follows:
