Demagor 0 Posted September 10, 2002 I found this on the Jane's website: Objective Individual Combat Weapon (16/08/00) The OICW will be capable of firing both standard 5.56mm kinetic-energy ammunition as well as a new 20mm high-explosive airbursting round. © Photo: Alliant Techsystems. ... this REALLY looks uncomfortable.  Is anyone truly considering manufacturing this, and/or is any nation's army really THAT interested in permanently displacing their infantrymen's shoulders by forcing them to wedge this weapon (which is roughly the size of Bermuda) in a firing position? theavonlady 2 Posted September 10, 2002 With a built-in coffee brewer and ice dispenser, I couldn't imagine a soldier not being happy to get his hands on one.
DarkLight 0 Posted September 10, 2002 Ah yes, the OICW, looks pretty big but who knows what an enjoyment it is to handle it.....
Demagor 0 Posted September 10, 2002 Well, I hear they were going to come out with another bizarre weapon... but something happened to their field tester... ... at least that one had more promise. It looked more comfortable.
-TU--33ker 0 Posted September 10, 2002 download the HK pack and have some fun with the OICW

So i'm pretty sure it wouldnt be THAT tough to handle. I know Heckler and Koch and Alliant Techsystems have been working on this a lot, but last i heard it was definitely still in the development stages. Check it out in more depth at HK Pro. I think they're down right now, but keep that site in mind. Lots of good stuff.
Renagade 0 Posted September 10, 2002 The OCIwhatsitsnamethingys just an ordinary rifle and grenadde launcher except the grenade timers linked to a rangefinder :o

Albert Schweitzer 10 Posted September 10, 2002 reminds me of cars like these! I mean it is a pure HK with something badly built on top of it (you can see the two things not realy fitting together). They should rather try to implement those huge things on top of the HK into the backpack and connect it with a visual aid in the helmet. Or whatever solution there may be, but that thing can only be used as a cudgel
red oct 2 Posted September 10, 2002 bet some of you didn't know that the OICW was designed by the Brittish. looks real scary though.
Tex -USMC- 0 Posted September 10, 2002 the assault rifle part detaches, so soldiers in the field will be able to have a choice (presumably)
Paratrooper 0 Posted September 10, 2002 I assume this is not intended as the weapon for every soldier and more as a support weapon, Am I right?
red oct 2 Posted September 10, 2002 no i think its supposed to be a replacement for the M4. they have a OICW type machine gun for support.

Col. Kurtz 0 Posted September 11, 2002 The OICW is both ugly, and cubersome. It weighs in at something like 9kg, which is around 3 times the wieght of the M4 and M16 it will replace. Its only saving grace is its fire power and advanced systems, but how well will all those computer chips and stuff fair in combat conditions?

Col. Kurtz 0 Posted September 11, 2002 Its a bit like making an Interceptor the size of a B-52. Even if it has the best missile in the world and advanced systems, its size is a real let down.........
Tex -USMC- 0 Posted September 11, 2002 It is pretty big. looks like they kind of went a little out of their way to make it look extra futuristic for Congress
Col. Kurtz 0 Posted September 11, 2002 No offence to you Americans out there, but the US Military do seem to think Bigger is better...... 6,000lb 'Daisy Cutter Bomb' .50cal Sniper Rifles B-52's Huge Aircraft Carriers And now the OICW OICW-One Insanley Cubersome Weapon One Incompetent Cash Waster

bogo 0 Posted September 11, 2002 Ok after my opinion this is good weapon for long range targets. But what do you do in close combat where you have to move from room to room. The weight of this weapon and the langth it's to d*mn big.
Col. Kurtz 0 Posted September 11, 2002 Another thing, if the OICW in SOF2 is anything to go by(which it is probably not even though Mullins is a real Merc), the 20mm grenade launcher is very fiddly and takes time to use. It is only really good for targets that are not going to shoot back. You cant just point and shoot. You have to lase a target, and all this other stuff and if the target is too close, then you cant fire.
Aculaud 0 Posted September 11, 2002 I personally think the AAI corp. model was more practical and compact looking. If it had gone through the amount of beta testing and revision that the current model had, they probably would have gotten something more maneuverable. This design is at least a little shorter:
