I am looking at the same thing for when I retreive my 30-30 from my dad, and get my handgun. It's not enough to just make them inoperable... you need to make sure that others cant get their hands on them. And I'm not just talking about crooks. I'm talking about drunk roommates or stupid friends as well.

Without getting into the whole gun control debate, I think that some sort of safe handling courses should be mandatory with all gun purchases EVERYWHERE.

NRA classes are about 100 bucks. I was surprised when i saw that.

Anyways, thanks mister frag. Anyone know any other place to check out firearms? Like Big 5.

in California, for purchase of handgun(and maybe rifle..not sure on this one though), you need to either take a safety test or sit and watch 2 hours of video.

i highly advise Jester to sit and watch BFSC(Basic Firearms Safety Course) videos, regardless. it was somewhat boring for me(like i didin't know how guns operate..duh  ), but there are other informations that you must know and should know. you can check you rknowledge against the information.

it usually costs about 40 bucks and it's for BFSC requirement, but even if you don't et the BFSC card(you won't) ask your local gun dealer so that you can learn from it.

edit: just re-read my post....we need more strict law...

Kmart, WalMart....

i'm kinda cranky today cause i realized i could have bought 500 Reminton .22 LRs for 10 bucks from Big 5. but the sale was over monday.. oh well...

As luck would have it, California already requires what is called a "Basic Firearms Safety Certificate" to be presented when purchasing firearms.

Further legislation has been approved (but hasn't gone into effect yet) that requires the demonstration of safe firearms handling and proficiency when purchasing firearms.

Nothing scares me more than some numbskull who buys a handgun and a box of ammo, puts both into his nightstand, and then expects to be able to use it safely ten years later when he hears a noise in the middle of the night.

I also think that anyone who lets a firearm fall into the hands of criminals or children through negligent storage needs to be put away for a VERY long time.

for handgun, AFAIK, you first submit paper work for background check, and it takws 10 days.

i don't know about rifles...never paid too much attention...

Great minds think alike.

How do you feel about firearms for home protection? I cant imagine ever keeping a handgun and a loaded magazine in the night stand. It would be too easy for my son to get to. And even though I plan on teaching him gun safety, kids can be awfully stupid at times.

Jester, the courses might be 100 dollars, but worth every penny. I was lucky as a kid and had a lot of firearm saavy people around to teach me about gun handling... but not everyone is that lucky.

AFAIK pellet guns and BB guns are exempt.

Warin, I keep all of my firearms loaded, with a round in the chamber. That is no problem because I treat all firearms as though they are always loaded -- in my case that just happens to be true.

All of the firearms are stored loaded in a locked safe in a walk-in closet off my master bedroom.

However, when I'm home, I am armed most of the time. I usually have a .40S&W handgun on my person, and I usually have a 12ga shotgun or .223 semi-automatic rifle nearby. My nightstand also hold ear and eye protection, a tactical light, OC spray, and handcuffs. The last thing you want is to apprehend someone and not be able to secure them.

and PLEASE take a safety course. as Warin said, it's worth evey penny. and I'd feel great that a young man like you knows at least something about gun safety.

I never said I would do it, i was just merely stating that if any burgler was to jump in he'd be in one hell of a situation.

Okay which is better for a beginner to start out with? just regular .22s or .22 magnums?
